Already there's some speculation that DeFilippo could be considered for the Colts HC position, which would mean Stefanski would probably get the Vikings OC position if that were to happen.
It would be unprecedented to hire a guy directly from position coach
I think Indy wants someone longer term. I could see someone like Dan Campbell being in play for Indy because he has ties to the two organizations that announced assistants have come from (Dave DeGuglielmo coached for Miami and New York Giants and the DC hire came from Dallas)
to head coach, skipping any coordinator experience, would it not?
Jim Zorn was the only case I can remember. Dan Snyder hired him to be his OC, but when he couldn't find a head coach, he promoted Zorn. It always seemed a weird situation. Why would to hire the OC first and then the head coach second. That action likely contributed to some head coach candidates not wanting to consider Washington.

I can't think of any example were that happened that's for sure.
With the Raiders and Browns

Ah, thanks.
Wasn't Reid a position coach before he got the Eagles job?
I'm pretty sure there have been a few others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
Marrone was OL coach before Jags hired him too.

Ugh, you had to remind me of Handley. Thanks for those other examples.

He was a special teams coordinator.
Good catch. The Redskins originally hired him to be their OC while they searched for their HC and finally gave him the job.
Bevell?

That's a good one. Can't argue with that.

Read on the Colts forum that the Colts have 3 interviews set up in the next 48 hrs. Del Rio as well as DeFilippo could be part of the 3.

Andy Reid did it. He was never an offensive coordinator.

Marrone was a head coach in Buffalo 2013-2014. Was also OC of Saints 2006-2008

Nope. It has happened a few times. Two names that were not mentioned are Mike Tice and Herm Edwards.

Raheem Morris was so hyped up when he was hired. He was supposed to be the next Mike Tomlin. That didn't last long.
so is Eric Mangini :-)
