Barkley vs Michigan

ajr2456 : 2/8/2018 11:26 am
I got hammered for saying his vision is a concern, and this is what I was referring to.

Granted it’s one play, but there’s more of those scattered throughout his film. This one is the most egregious one.

He’s a very good player, but not the perfect prospect he’s made out to be.
Barkley - ( New Window )

Bad miss.. also just one play.

You can make all-time greats look bad with a SS this small.

With the fact he goes down easily when touched. Could be a problem in the NFL.
Like you said, it was one play,
barens : 2/8/2018 11:52 am : link
and it was two years ago.

This past year, he absolutely shredded an excellent Michigan defense.

Really all that needs to be said.

It's one play.

Marshall Faulk and LaDanian Tomlinson probably missed running lanes sometimes too.
Weird thread
Mike from Ohio : 2/8/2018 11:59 am : link
Highlighting one bad play from two years ago? You can find a few bad plays from every player in this draft.

What was the point?
Why do you hate Barkley so much?

What did he ever do to you?

I don't.

When concerns about him were brought up Barkley people shot them down like they didn't exist. Here's the evidence.

And like I said it's one play, but there's more of these.
For every one of those plays
gmen9892 : 2/8/2018 12:37 pm : link
You can probably find about 100 plays where he displayed great vision. I am not going to get too worried about him missing a hole 2-3 times.

There's also the fact that he doesn't go down easy when touched.

He’s a freak at RB but he also is raw at the position he is what he is not a top 5 back though imo

"He’s a freak at RB but he also is raw at the position." Holy incoherence, Batman!
I can see him dropping to the 3rd round

not much sooner.

<sigh>

Some threads are unbelievable.
I remember
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 2/8/2018 1:41 pm : link
watching Earl Campbell get absolutely stoned by the Notre Dame defense in the Cotton Bowl back when Montana was the ND QB. At the time I thought that Campbell was not worth drafting. Guess I was wrong on that one! One game does not a RB make or break.
Such an odd thread
RobCarpenter : 2/8/2018 1:44 pm : link
because I expected to see highlights of Barkley destroying Michigan this year, and not one of his plays in a game where Penn State was utterly destroyed by Michigan and couldn't do anything on offense.

Leveon Bell
Sy'56 : 2/8/2018 2:10 pm : link
had a lot of bad college tape too.

Barkley is special, he isn't perfect.

There isn't much more to analyze.
Franco Harris ran
bronxgiant : 2/8/2018 2:12 pm : link
out of bounds for years and years! Still an all time great!

There's also the fact that he doesn't go down easy when touched.

Sometimes he does. I can recall one run off tackle to his left where there were two tacklers waiting for him, and no means of escape. Much like a QB about to be sacked, he secured the ball and hit the dirt. Like I said, maybe it's smart.

And in fairness too him, Le'Veon Bell wasn't fond of trying to run through brick walls in school either. But he's a different player in the pros.

arcarsenal : 2/8/2018 2:22 pm : link
It's funny because the linked clip actually shows his ability just as much as it shows a mistake.

He misses a huge running lane and still gets all the way to the other side of the field on a cutback before he gets taken down.

Using this as some sort of indictment is silly.

I'm not even really an advocate of taking him @ 2 overall, but I think he's going to be pretty darn good.

Engaging Stan in a football discussion is like asking your dog about thermodynamics. Sure it may be funny once in a while, but usually it's just pointless.

All RB's do that, but eventually they get touched, and Barkley tends to go right down. Not so smart.

It's absolutely true. Watch the games.

More elusive than he is powerful. Has modest broken tackle numbers during his career at Penn State. Plays with inconsistent leg drive through contact when working between the tackles. Will need to develop a more north/south mindset as a pro. Doesn't always trust his run crease and will look to find side doors to bounce out of. Gets too cute with stutter-steps and jukes on first level allowing help to flow to the ball. Needs a little earlier commitment on stretch plays and sweeps rather than going through extended probing. Has bouts with focus drops as pass catcher and his catch radius is limited. Inconsistent at take-on blocks in pass protection.
Stan isn't off base
ajr2456 : 2/8/2018 4:49 pm : link
From Jon Ledyard:

Quote:
Talked about this with @NDTScouting some, but I really don't think Barkley's vision is the problem. It's his decision-making that is the issue. He sees it, he just decides he can do more if he improvises. And part of the problem is that he isn't a physical runner by nature.

Quote:
He'd rather get out on the perimeter then put his shoulder down and work through contact within structure. Barkley has always been able to play his way and survive (thrive even). He has almost no flaws outside of this, but that style will be in question vs NFL competition.

Quote:
Sometimes it is that, a lot of time it's just that he would rather try to out-athlete you than run through a tackle attempt. That's his preference. I'm not saying he's afraid of contact, but physicality is not his preferred style.Jon Ledyard added,

Going down easy, is the wrong way to put it.

you lost me at catch radius...one he isnt a WR, two...have you seen his one handed grab on the highlight real? the kid is just a special talent...overthinking and splitting hairs is silly...you think OBJ had perfect tape? he would be the first overall pick in that draft if it was redone imo

Funny, but none of those quotes from scouts
Matt M. : 2/9/2018 7:35 am : link
actually say what you said. There is a difference between "goes down easy on contact" (what you said) and "needs to be more physical" (what the sckuts said). There comments in their entirety more corroborate the notion that he looks to avoid contact.
