Great break from the tedium of NBA highlights that never seem to end. Somehow, people still get excited about 6’8” guys dunking.
Downhill ski race, ski jumping, and everybody’s trendy passion, curling. It’s great to see athletes excel the one time every four years that the world pays attention.
almost everyone fell on their jumps. As a dad of kids about that age I feel horrible for them, all that practicing and competing and then nerves get the best of them.
USA vs. Canada. That is always intense. I guess I'm an outlier, because I cannot stand curling. In order to enjoy curling, there would have to be a lot of beer consumption for me and the participants. A lot of beer...
of the Russian athletes lost their appeal yesterday to compete.

true, 28 Russians lost their appeal yesterday. the 169 Russian athletes competing under a neutral flag (not much off their usual winter Olympics numbers) while supposedly cleared after detailed checks, are the products of a dirty system that was proven by WADA and the IOC to implement widespread doping of its athletes and for which Russia still denies it is responsible, despite the damning evidence of holes in the wall of doping testing rules and urine bottle swap outs by Russian security officials. it's hard to believe that these athletes are clean until Russia owns up to its mistakes and takes meaningful steps to stop cheating. the russians are not alone - there are a number of scandanavian athletes engaged in blood doping - but not at a government-condoned, systemic level.
Control is in the North. And how impoverished it is and barren, even probably for elite athletes...

yeah north korea and south korea are neighbours, but they may as well be from different planets or decades. in the Olympic village this year, you can pay for goods with wearable devices like gloves, pins and stickers that have a chip and antenna embedded. in NK you are probably only paying with cash, government ID cards or bartering. the NK representatives are probably feeling like Brendan fraser's character in the movie blast from the past.
I take exception to that. I'd rather watch sports than most of the stuff on TV, with perhaps the exception of Netflix originals (especially the Marvel programs).

The unspoken message in "Cool Runnings" was that the Winter Olympics were a place where black people weren't supposed be? Pardon me while I consider that article a joke.
For them, it was a familiar scenario: Despite being exceptional in a field dominated by whites, he was bypassed for a job he deserved. What's more, when he pointed that out, he was shouted down as an ungrateful distraction.
How was being a flag bearer a job he "deserved"? If we are going just by exceptional performances, there are other winter Olympic athletes more decorated.
Frankly carrying the flag isn't a job to be deserved, it is an honor, and his reaction is one that isn't exactly helping that cause.
He has basically accused the decision makers to have done it out of racial considerations., and his reaction is that he was excluded because he's black, then he follows it up by not going to the ceremony at all.

Published a special section on the Olympics this past Wednesday and one of the things I liked about it was that it broke all the sports down and gave specific information on each sport including when the sport is scheduled to be broadcast and on which network. There seems to be a similar electronic version available from the link below about midway down the page. Washington Post Olympics Info - ( New Window )
Reunification of Korea is a goal for both Koreas. The problem is that the conditions for reunification are as diverse as the two countries. This is a big step in showing unity of the Korean people... the political and economic obstacles will always be there.
many Koreans named "Kim?" I understand that their family name comes first but why so many "Kims?" Does it refer to a profession like "Smith" in the US or a certain city or region? There are also a lot of people with "Park" in their name but not as many as "Kim." This is a serious question.
Dude flipped out on Colbert years ago and essentially effed his teammates by refusing to participate in any of the relay events several olympics ago (probably cost them gold). Dudes a great skater but clearly has a personality and ego problem. Also best athlete doesn’t mean carry the flag - Phelps in 16 notwithstanding
the figure skating scoring. I just watched two guys fall on their asses twice each, yet they scored higher than two skaters who were clean.
If I heard it correctly, it is better to try and fail a difficult move than to not try one at all.
Jesus.
Yeah, it’s bullshit. Something had to change with the scoring. Probably why there are so many skaters falling in their programs too.
You want to give some extra points to skaters that try hard things...fine. But athletes that fail at their program should never score higher than althletes that nail their program. All these routines are difficult. Nobody is coming to the Olympics with a cookie cutter program.

Agreed. Communication has been less than ideal.
I had to watch the Skiathlon on my phone at 1 AM. NBC and NBCSN were showing taped delayed events rather than live coverage.
Yeah, Skiathlon is pretty boring, but at least show events live when they happen.

What a sports moment. Trailing going into his last run, possibly his last ever Olympic appearance, he throws down one of the greatest runs of his life to win
Amazing run, not sure how anyone finds that boring Â
And was thinking that him dragging the flag was a bad look and wondered if there might be some blow back.
Seriously doubt any blowback, in each of his gold medal performances he draped himself in the American flag in a show of patriotism. While he was walking off the halfpipe course the flag dragged behind him. Only the worst kind of people would have an issue with that. flag etiquette has evolved significantly over the years. and clearly he was not intending to disrespect the flag.
For all the talk about "flag code" every athlete that drapes the flag on their body is violating the "flag code". A lot of what gets done with the flag during the Olympics is in violation of the "flag code".

My Grandfather was an old school Retired USCG and was big on the flag never touching the ground. I personally have no problem with it. Like you said, it was not his intent to disgrace the flag, but I can see how some people might take issue with it.
some people may have an issue with it. Some people always do, but like I said in these current times where in some places simple proper display of the American flag is considered hate speech, I think the majority would prefer flag code violations (that were well intended) to the alternative.
horrible loss....are you kidding me? They dominated for 2+ periods and then sat back and got slow. Slovenia skated circles around them in the final 10 minutes and what was OT. Fucking brutal.
At a news conference later Wednesday evening, White said he didn’t know he had dropped the flag and apologized.
“Honestly, if there was anything … I didn’t mean any disrespect,” White said. “The flag that’s flying up on my house right now is definitely really high up there. Sorry about that. I’m really proud to represent Team USA.”
Hockey was my favorite Olympic sport with NHL players. I read an article of a potential Team USA with NHL players and by all accounts they would have been right there with Team Canada competing for the gold. This current version of Olympic hockey looks like a bad amateur competition. I do not even believe the US sent its best amateur players this year. So no interest really.
I also saw Russia lost, so there's that.
If the NHL would have participated in the Olympics Â
it may have been the best display of hockey talent since the 1996 world cup.
I wasn't around/aware for most of the 70's but I cannot imagine a more talented NHL than what we're currently seeing.
And while the Canadian dominance still strong (they'd be heavy favorites), Canadians only make up 46% of the NHL, where it used to be in the 70% range. USA is second with 27%. Sweden 3rd around 10%.
occasionally when taking down/putting up the flag Â
it has slipped and touched the ground. It was a mistake and I meant no disrespect. I apologize to anyone I might have offended and said 10 Pledge of Allegiances as penance.
American Emily Sweeney walking after her luge crash. Anyone catch that? Sliding down an ice tube at 68mph, on one hand looks thrilling but on the other, scary as hell.

Yes, and it made we wonder how people found out they were good at this.
It also reminded me quickly of the guy who died in Vancouver, that was luge wasn't it? I think he went off the track and of course it was on video.
The majority of these Canadian women play hockey in the USA. Could we maybe leverage the USA hockey framework and get the gold for once?
The men; forget it.
Trying to find Slovenia on the map...
Props to NBC for trying to spotlight Chris Bourque as something other than an aging minor-league journeyman. The son of Ray Bourque? Here comes the gold!
Canada for the Gold the past four hockey world cups - not sure we need to copy anything from the Canadian model.
it's just been the Olympics that have been a problem.
I still expect USA vs Canada in the women's final.
the men is just not interesting. Not even like a young team of hungry college kids, it's a bunch of has-beens (Gionta), journeymen, and just minor league hockey players.
not even interesting. for any teams (it's not just the US).
they aren't even televising the USA vs. Slovakia game?!
NBC and NBCSN are showing the same men's figure skating program?!!? NBCSN is showing the live competition. NBC is showing the same competition but on tape delay.
morning (7am EST) is another Olympic hockey showdown between Team USA and The Soviet Uni...er Russ...uh Team OAR. It should be "A Crazy Game of Hockey."
figure skating right now, American Nathan Chen, who screwed up in the short program and came in at 17th, landed six quad jumps in the long program to make a huge comeback. Apparently, no one has ever even attempted more than five. If a few of the favorites screw up he could win a medal.
US could not deal with the OAR speed, and is just not a good team. Datsyuk and Kovalchuk with some has-beens could have won. US all but eliminated now. Win or go in.
US goalie stinks too.
Most Hockey East college teams could beat them I think and some of the ECAC teams too.
"all but eliminated" and also win or go home. Every team is in the same boat. Their next loss will send them out.
Us needs to win. So does every other team that will still play.
except the teams that finished in the top 2 of their 4 team brackets. The US finished behind Slovenia. Slovenia.
they're in the playoff round, the top 4 get byes. they need to win to get into the quarterfinals.
they're done.
worst US Olympic team ever all things considered IMO.
the 2006 team I think had the worst finish, 8th place (and one of the 90's teams, maybe 1994 before pros went - but a good friend of mine was on that team so I give them a pass), but consider Brian Gionta was on that team in 2006. He's on this one too, LOL - and he wasn't young then.
are acting like the US team was expected to be gold medalists. Most didn't even project them to medal.
I didn't expect anything. I predicted before the Olympics started that the US would be awful. And the whole men's bracket would be awful. Outside of some spurts there just isn't inspired hockey being played. It's like Men's league with a few ringers.
Still doesn't mean I can't call them out for being awful.
and while I didn't expect the US to be in contention, I didn't expect them to lose to Slovenia either or get beaten out in their bracket by Slovenia.
I would have rather the US built a team of all college kids if NHL players weren't competing.
this team is just unlikable outside of Greenway and normally I'd like Donato but he's a future Bruin.
it's just not a group of players that inspire me with their play and I'm not looking for another miracle on ice, the USA has had plenty of olympic teams between 1980 and Nagano (when pros started playing) that didn't win, but still inspired.
The team is built on mostly journeymen, it's I believe the oldest Olympic hockey team the US has ever had. and personally, I'd prefer they built the team with kids that had some upside or at least a future in hockey instead of primarily journeymen.
there is nothing inspiring (to me) to watch this US team. I've already said it previously the only players I see a lot of emotion/intensity from are Greenway and Donato (two of the three or four college kids on the team).
I'd rather see the US junior team from the World Cup this past January play here, I bet they'd do better.
of course though those are the best women's hockey players on the planet (collectively, not just USA) unlike the Men.
US women to the gold medal game after crushing Finland 5 - 0 , 10:45 pm on Wednesday. They play the winner of Canada vs Russia on now (Canada cruising 4 - 0).
This will be the third consecutive Olympics where the USA and Canada women have played for the gold, with Canada winning the first 2 (while the USA has beaten Canada for the gold in the last three world cups).
So far that game is the most interesting thing of the Olympics for me.
Men play a rematch with Slovakia tonight at 10:10 to try and advance to the medal round. If USA wins they play the Czech republic tomorrow night same time. If they lose I believe it will be the worst ever Olympic finish for the men.
in this game, wouldn't be in this spot if they'd played like this against Slovenia.
Just 1 - 0 and the Slovaks ran the US goalie (not violently, but it injured the goalie) and a different guy on the same play cheap-shotted Donato (who has the US goal) with an elbow to the face.
US to go on a 5 - 3 PP, but maybe without their starting goalie in net.
from the US. Only thing bitter about this one is Ryan Donato is establishing himself as a bona fide NHL prospect, and he's a Boston Bruin draftee.
He was already a decent prospect, I mean he's 4th in the NCAA in goals, but man he's showing he's a complete player in this Olympics (albeit against competition that is slightly worse than he sees regularly even in the ECAC).
USA plays the Czech's tonight with the winner having the pleasure of a rematch vs OAR.
Glad to see the U.S. men win last night and look forward to the Czeck game tonight. Womens hockey has been great, too. Was impressed by the pairs ice dancing contest -- thought the fourth place U.S. pair was fantastic as well as the medalists, who were even better. Want to see Vonn win the downhill today and very, very sorry the schedule has been so collapsed by weather issues that Schiffrin had to pull out to concentrate on the combined. NBC has made it hard to follow everything properly. Olympics channel helps, but not much.
Go out there and take the Gold you've worked so long and hard for. Chillax & play your game. Bring home the gold girls!!!
Need a big game from Knight and a brick wall from Rooney!!!
Zagitova/Medvedeva: how many of the judges had ever read Anna Karenina and understood the theme underlying Medvedeva's performance? Not enough, I suspect. Audience reaction -- rejection of judges' final score for her -- was right on, IMHO. Could understandably have awarded golds to both and should have.
off Canada and the OAR beat the Czech's (another shutout) setting up a Germany vs OAR Gold Medal game.
What were the odds?
I mean OAR is the favorite, but there were doubts if Russia would even compete in the Olympics, and Germany? Not even in my top 10.
Hope Germany wins, but doubt it. Kovalchuck and Datsyuk showed again they're the best players in the tournament.
Hopefully Bettman realizes how much he screwed up here and the NHL players are back in 2022. The Winter Olympics just isn’t the same. In Sochi I remember wanting to watch every game, because most rosters had at least a few NHLers. Shit, I was watching the Norway games because of Zucc. This year, not so much. Aside from a few US games, I had no interest.
but he has some points and it's not him, it's the owners who decided this.
The biggest point for me was that the NHL is prohibited from using Olympic footage in their marketing.
For example, Crosby's Gold Medal game winner in Vancouver, while it was a garbage goal, was enormous in the moment and the NHL cannot use it to further their sport.
So when people say the NHL misses out on the best marketing event for their sport, I'm not sure I agree.
The best case for the NHL would be for Ice Hockey to be a summer olympic sport. I know this seems contradictory but it's played indoors, rinks have ice all summer and it wouldn't mess with the NHL season and force them to take two weeks off during their season and extend it farther out.
There's no doubt the hockey suffers in the Olympics, but at least I get the NHL perspective and I find it sort of hard to completely fault them.
VS. Sweden starts in about 2 and a half hours, Sat 1:35 am EST. Sweden has been playing lights out this tournament. It will most likely take a near flawless game from John Shuster and the American men to bring home the gold. But after the huge semi-final win over Canada it feels like we are playing with house money tonight. This will be the match of these men's lives, I really hope they leave it all on the ice. Let's go boys!
Huge shot for Shuster to score 5 in the 8th end. US now up 10-5. Shuster has disappointed in the past on key shots, but nailed this one. Got to hold on now.
Sweden up 4-1 over host South Korea in the 6th end after stealing a point in each of the last 2 ends. If Sweden holds on I will have nailed my prediction of Sweden over South Korea for gold in my semi serious curling preview thread. Women of Curling preview - ( New Window )

The unspoken message in "Cool Runnings" was that the Winter Olympics were a place where black people weren't supposed be? Pardon me while I consider that article a joke.

Slightly better than the movie.
Reunification of Korea is a goal for both Koreas. The problem is that the conditions for reunification are as diverse as the two countries. This is a big step in showing unity of the Korean people... the political and economic obstacles will always be there.

They spend billions on the Olympics but make viewing so damn confusing.
Agreed. Communication has been less than ideal.
I had to watch the Skiathlon on my phone at 1 AM. NBC and NBCSN were showing taped delayed events rather than live coverage.
Yeah, Skiathlon is pretty boring, but at least show events live when they happen.
It doesn't make sense to get points just for trying something
What they basically are doing is forcing skaters to do whatever acrobatics possible at the expense of the artistry aspect.
2020 Tokyo
2022 Beijing
The spread of scores is too wide.
Why can't they just postpone this event until another day?!
Fall after fall after fall. Plus, they eliminated the third run.
It's absolutely terrible.

I think even.now closest is 8.5 .
Age 17! Woooooowoooo!!!
Snowboard half pipe fuck yeah!
I don't think anyone even did one!
9.825!
Silver was like 8.6!
Insane!! Insane!
I mean. Snowboarding was just our off beat hobby and not even allowed on most Ski mountains. God bless America. Seriously.
There was a split vote of the board of 8 people. It isn't like he wasn't even considered or they voted against him.
They flipped a frigging coin to decide things.
But that's racist? This country truly is losing its mind at times.

Great snowboarder. Not much of a man.

And was thinking that him dragging the flag was a bad look and wondered if there might be some blow back.

My Grandfather was an old school Retired USCG and was big on the flag never touching the ground. I personally have no problem with it. Like you said, it was not his intent to disgrace the flag, but I can see how some people might take issue with it.
Yes, I did. Awful.

horrible loss....are you kidding me? They dominated for 2+ periods and then sat back and got slow. Slovenia skated circles around them in the final 10 minutes and what was OT. Fucking brutal.
the women's games are fundamentally better.
At a news conference later Wednesday evening, White said he didn’t know he had dropped the flag and apologized.
“Honestly, if there was anything … I didn’t mean any disrespect,” White said. “The flag that’s flying up on my house right now is definitely really high up there. Sorry about that. I’m really proud to represent Team USA.”
but its here so..
Our hockey team sucks ass!!! At least the Russians lost as well

Yes, and it made we wonder how people found out they were good at this.
It also reminded me quickly of the guy who died in Vancouver, that was luge wasn't it? I think he went off the track and of course it was on video.
U.S. Women vs. Canada Preliminary
10:10 p.m. (Feb. 14)
Here comes the gold!
it's just been the Olympics that have been a problem.
I still expect USA vs Canada in the women's final.
the men is just not interesting. Not even like a young team of hungry college kids, it's a bunch of has-beens (Gionta), journeymen, and just minor league hockey players.
not even interesting. for any teams (it's not just the US).
NBC and NBCSN are showing the same men's figure skating program?!!? NBCSN is showing the live competition. NBC is showing the same competition but on tape delay.
WTF is going on here?

US goalie stinks too.
Most Hockey East college teams could beat them I think and some of the ECAC teams too.
Us needs to win. So does every other team that will still play.
It isn't like they are showboating or embarrassing the country with antics or something.
It is pretty much a bunch of third tier players
The team is built on mostly journeymen, it's I believe the oldest Olympic hockey team the US has ever had. and personally, I'd prefer they built the team with kids that had some upside or at least a future in hockey instead of primarily journeymen.
there is nothing inspiring (to me) to watch this US team. I've already said it previously the only players I see a lot of emotion/intensity from are Greenway and Donato (two of the three or four college kids on the team).
I'd rather see the US junior team from the World Cup this past January play here, I bet they'd do better.
Further proof that you can't enhance Curlers. The sport was created for impaired people.
I would watch that. I bet the Chinese are amazing at Tiddlywinks.
Canada vs Germany, Czechs vs OAR.
honestly don't care.
If anything I'm rooting for OAR, I like watching Datsyuk and Kovalchuk
I guess I'll hope for a Germany vs OAR final.
Need a big game from Knight and a brick wall from Rooney!!!
USA... USA... USA!!!
