Bold offseason predictions for all 32 NFL teams

New York Giants

The Giants will sign All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell

It will be costly, but he has the connection to general manager Dave Gettleman, and the team's top priority this offseason is improving the line. The Giants also will re-sign Justin Pugh to play tackle. That's a lot of money to allocate to the line and two of the top linemen in free agency. -- Jordan Raanan

thats what im hoping will happen

then take another tackle at top of 2nd. rehaul that o line.
Pugh?

Ew.
Pugh doesn’t get respect.
Keith : 2/9/2018 5:55 pm : link
If he’s your 3rd or 4th best lineman, you’ll have a pretty good line. Our line immediately improved when he filled in at RT and it was obvious. You can’t replace 5 guys and if you let Pugh go, you might have to. I’m all for bringing Pugh back.

The issue isn't his ability, which is average.
It's his salary demands and durability.

The issue is they'd be paying him an amount that you would expect a guy who is your best or second best lineman to make.
Which tackle spot would they propose he play?
Simms11 : 2/9/2018 6:06 pm : link
He's played very little LT in the NFL and I'm not so sure the Giants would want to experiment there again and sign him to a deal as an LT?! I'm also not so sure they'd bring him in as a RT if in fact Flowers is moved to that side. Do we really want to bring Flowers back as the LT?
Pugh would be fine for the 11 games he'd play.
Mr. Bungle : 2/9/2018 6:09 pm : link
But what about the 5 games he'd miss?

11? We can dream. He played in 8 games last season for an average of $1M/game. The return on that investment earned us one of the worst records in football.
Hmmmm...
j_rud : 2/9/2018 6:28 pm : link
"Team in desperate need of OL help signs top FA lineman, who has ties to their new GM" is about as far from a "bold prediction" as you can get. New coach, new GM, 2nd pick in a draft with a few high profile QB prospects, and they go with "Giants sign Norwell". Raanan really going out on a limb there.
I'd rather see the Giants
Jay on the Island : 2/9/2018 6:50 pm : link
try to sign a lesser FA OT like Chris Hubbard rather than give Justin Pugh $8-10 million per season.
Solder has to be first
Dankbeerman : 2/9/2018 7:05 pm : link
there is no other upgrade at LT in FA or the draft.

Norwell as the second piece is gravy
Pugh is underrated...
kinard : 2/9/2018 7:39 pm : link
...but over-valued. Still, my guess is that he would be even better if they put some good guys around him. He seems like a good team player too.

If he can keep the back issues under control, I would gamble on him and overpay a bit.
Pugh is part of the problem.
RottenApple : 2/9/2018 7:47 pm : link
Good riddance to another Jerry Reach special.

There are plenty of potential LT options on day two of the draft. There are guys like Jamarco Jones, Crosby, Kolton Miller, O'Neill, Rankin, Okorafor, and Cappa. Isaiah Wynn is only 6'2 but he has the talent to play outside but his best position in the pros is inside at guard. Wynn would be a shorter but better version of Justin Pugh IMO. Wynn would be a perfect fit at either LG or RG and if the Giants lose their LT he could slide outside and hold down the fort if needed.
move on from pugh
mdc1 : 2/9/2018 8:07 pm : link
.
I don’t know. Pugh looked pretty good on
Ivan15 : 2/9/2018 8:11 pm : link
Say Yes to the Dress.
I'd re-sign Pugh
mrvax : 2/9/2018 8:16 pm : link
if he was willing to take a deal that pays him on games played/dressed. His average over his career is 12.6 games per year.

The few times he played LT or RT he did very well and is good at LG too. These type of Olinemen are really useful (when healthy).

4 years, $50M, $20M guaranteed pro rated on games played. That's $12.5 average but would drop to $9.8M on 12.6 games played per year.
I would be very surprised if DG gets Norwell. Too much money.
Ivan15 : 2/9/2018 8:21 pm : link
I thought there was a good chance to re-sign Pugh because he is versatile. But he doesn’t fit DG’s mold for o-linemen, tall and more than 320 LBs.

If he did play LT, it actually would reduce the stress on his back because he no longer would play head up against big DTs.
Solder isn’t leaving Boston and Boston Children’s Hospital. Forget it!
Ivan15 : 2/9/2018 8:27 pm : link
What would you do if your child had to go to the hospital regularly for treatment?

Move to NYC and get your child over to Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital.
Ridiculous to re-sign Pugh or Richburg
GeorgeAdams33 : 2/9/2018 9:10 pm : link
I think Coughlin & Flaherty knew what they were doing. Reese drafted Pugh & Richburg higher than they deserved and TC just kept talking about how we needed to get bigger, stronger, tougher, etc... on the offensive line. They saw that Richburg was too small for any other spot besides Center when he got thrown around as a rookie at Left Guard. Pugh proved to be too small and weak to play RT as he got manhandled at the point of attack and it just killed our running game. The results were not much better when the two were put at their current positions and they have both been often injured & out of the lineup for great lengths of time with concussion issues. No thank you. Let them walk. We want to change the culture that these two helped to create.
Sign him to good guard money and try him at LT
NoGainDayne : 2/9/2018 9:48 pm : link
he's better than any other option for that position than I see out there.
Pugh @ Left Tackle?
GeorgeAdams33 : 2/9/2018 10:39 pm : link
Yeah, I'll bet that TC and PF never even thought of that long enough to actually consider it...........
Mrvax: Would you do that because I sure wouldn't!

Do you have kids?
This is a bold prediction?
Big Rick in FL : 2/9/2018 11:17 pm : link
I'm almost sure we sign Norwell. I've seen a lot of NFL writers say the same thing. It's literally the perfect fit. Build the OL in free agency this year. Address the rest of the OL & LBs in the draft after taking a QB at 2.

We'll have Darnold/Rosen/Mayfield starting his 2nd year with a good OL & some nasty weapons to throw to.
I wouldn't worry too much about Pugh resigning with us
Peppers : 2/9/2018 11:28 pm : link
He's excited about free agency.

And Jordan got a little crazy with that Norwell prediction huh.. Just about everyone is connecting those dots. However, I did hear Norwell is a real lowkey guy. I'm not sure the New York/New Jersey area and media is exactly his cup of tea.

2 grown daughters. I'd have to be convinced that the new hospital was at least as good as the previous one. Also have to consider his child's feelings about switching medical teams. The child may have bonded well with a provider.

I don't really want Solder but I believe he can move as long as he wasn't moving to the sticks.
I’m calling it now
est1986 : 2/10/2018 12:59 am : link
Flowers, Norwell, Jones, draft pick, Pugh starting OL
Wheeler & Bisnowaty back up tackles
Fluker and player X back up the guards and center
Add Barkley and that running game will be a legitimate threat
Then imagine how much damage Odell, Shep and Engram do
As long as Eli can still deliver
This should be a playoff team next year despite 3-13 this year
And what if Eli struggles and the team starts out
NikkiMac : 2/10/2018 5:52 am : link
0-2 or 0-3 do we switch to Webb or draft pick or are we still worried about Eli’s legacy ?

The thing is he isn't going to get "good" Guard money. He's going to be the highest paid OG in NFL history.

The Giants aren't drafting a RB with the 2nd pick. I'd probably just get that out of your head. It's a great QB Draft. The Giants probably won't be in this spot for a long time. Their starting QB will be 38 in 2019 while making 23.2 million & can save 17 million by not having him on the roster in 2019. That's exactly what's going to happen. They aren't paying a 38 year old 23.2 million.

It is really tiresome when fans trumpet the cap hit as what Eli is being paid. The signing bonus was paid 4 years ago. He is only being paid $16.5M for this year and $17M for next year. With what starting QB's are being paid, Eli is a bargain. Dave, Mara, and Tisch might view the salary expense as a net savings compared to what others are receiving. Some will point out the QBs that have set the market are much younger with supposed upside. But the market is about to be redefined when Big Ben signs an extension (The Steelers have gone on the record that they are looking to extend Big Ben).
$8-10 million a year seems like too much to pay
Giants1956 : 2/10/2018 9:17 am : link
a player that I'd rate Average to Solid with back issues.
Pugh seems like a good guy but his 'cost' may be
too high. But, you can't get rid of everyone.

Why no John Jerry. He would be backup G & RT.
Other than the cost and youth advantage, I'd take
over Bisnowaty who I believe is too over rated in
most fans minds.

To add to Rick's point, your draft pick at RG, after Barkley in the 2nd and presumably a QB at #2, means that RG is a Round 3 selection or lower. I guess after 11 years of JR, my expectations are not so high...Can't wait for this new FO to begin to click
Rick I like Darnold alot
est1986 : 2/10/2018 11:18 am : link
But I think Cleveland takes him at number one... and in that case I would not take Baker number 2... or Rosen.... Or Allen... so I'm not just going to agree that this QB class is automatically going to be 2004 all over again with 3 franchise QB's going top 10... doubt that happens... I do see 2 going in the top 5 maybe even 3 in the top 6 or top 10.... but I really don't want to touch any of those guys not named Darnold at #2. Barkley is legit. He is a stud. So is Chubb. I can't agree that we have to go QB when those two players are bonafide blue chippers.... We'll see what Dave G thinks about these QB's soon enough... If Browns pass on a QB and Dave G gets to take his pick of the litter at QB and doesn't take a QB it will say alot about how he values this QB class.
How do you think you are going to see what Dave G
Jimmy Googs : 2/10/2018 11:21 am : link
thinks about these QBs?

Who TF is "Baker"??????
GeorgeAdams33 : 2/10/2018 12:48 pm : link
If you are going to all of the other QBs by their last name try to stay consistent. There is no QB named Baker so lets just stick to Mayfield. More annoying than people calling OBJ ODB............ Just plain stupid.
