So for some reason I can't sleep tonight and I'm pretty bored (This is a long post) I started doing some research on Kevin Stefanski & John DeFilippo, because a lot of Giants fans are pissed we "missed" out on DeFillipo. Not really sure why as we never even showed any interest in him. With that said I think we may have dodged a bullet. Yes Wentz had a great season. Foles had a great playoff run, but if you look back at his past QB history I think this past season may be an outlier.
Prior to joining the Eagles he coached in the NFL for 7 seasons after leaving the Giants as a quality control coach on offense and joining the Eagles. I compiled a list of the yearly completion percentage and a total number of TD passes & INTs. He's been given a lot of talented players and didn't develop a single one of them. Including 6 first round picks, 2 second round picks and 1 third round pick.
Outside of this past season the QBs he's coached have had TERRIBLE numbers. Here are his QBs completion % numbers. He had QBs with talent basically everywhere he has been. The 1st pick JaMarcus Russell, 11th pick Daunte Culpepper & 81st pick Josh McCown in Oakland.
2007 OAK - 57%
2008 OAK - 49.3%
The 5th overall pick Mark Sanchez & the 49th overall pick Kellen Clemens with the Jets.
2009 NYJ - 51.8%
The 1st overall pick Carson Palmer, the 10th overall pick Matt Leinart. Also had the 36th pick Derek Carr in 2014.
2012 OAK - 52.1%
2013 OAK - 56.6%
2014 OAK - 58.1%
Had the 22nd overall pick Johnny Mazel & 81st pick Josh McCown.
2015 CLE - 59.1%
These numbers are heavily skewed by Josh McCown who was a 5 year vet before DeFillipo ever became a position coach. If you combine the QBs completion percentage for every year of him as the QBs coach or offensive coordinator you get an average of 54.8 completion %. They've also combined to throw 125 TDs and 119 INTs. |
Obviously I can't speak definitively about him being successful or being a bust, but the numbers of the guys he's coached are really really bad. Here's to hoping we make the right choice at OC & QB coach.
It's the coach's fault he didn't develop a bunch of stiffs?

Well yeah the coaches job is to develop the players. It's not like they were 7th round picks either. He had a lot of high picks and didn't develop a single one.
If DeFiilippo signing with the Vikings, frees up Shurmurr’s QB coach Stefanski, I think that works perfect.

By the way where is Stefanski been hiding? We haven't heard a peep lately. Is he being interviewed, talked to by phone? Are the Vikings really letting him go? I'm surprised the beat writers don't have something on this. It's been all quiet.
He's 35 years old and has been with the Vikings since he was 24. He's worked QBs were 6 years, worked with the TEs for 2 years and RBs for a year. I love that he has experience coaching so many different positions. He also played college football and played defense. So he's obviously got a great understanding of how the game works. Far more than a guy whose only coached 1 position his entire career. That should really help if he becomes our OC. Playing defense is the thing that will make him great IMO. As will learning offense from so many so many delifferent HCs/OCs.
I'd have to think not hearing anything is a good thing though. If the Vikings were going to decline his interview requests I'm sure that's something we would have heard about from Vikings writers.
Which is similar to what we'd be getting in Shurmur and/or Stefanski. All of them are disciples of Andy Reid. I just don't know how much DeFillipo had to do with their success when you're looking at his past jobs. That's why I started looking. He hasn't been successful anywhere else except under Pederson & Reich.
IMO what Shurmur & Stefanski did with a 3rd string career journeyman, 5th Rd Stefon Diggs, UDFA Thielen and losing a RB who looked like the favorite to win OROY is just as if not more impressive then the Eagles offense who has a lot of high draft picks & high priced free agents.
Based off of everyone else's hype Flip is the guy I wanted at the beginning, but after doing more & more reading about him I was completely against him.
That's the thing though when you look back it looks bad, but these guys were top prospects and none of them developed. I find it hard to believe that 9 QBs drafted in the top 81 picks just flat out sucked. The coaches need to take blame somewhere. Literally not a single one was a good player under DeFillipo.

stuck with some genuine flat tires. Not sure about how good a coach he is, but you might give him a pass for that gruesome arrray .

And they became good players after DeFilippo?
That's developing a QB. That's extremely impressive. Stefanski developing Keenum is more impressive then DeFillipo's entire resume and Keenum didn't have anywhere near the talent or size that guys like Russell, Sanchez, Manziel had coming out of college.
So if Stefanski can do that with a 6 foot 205 pound QB that doesn't have a great arm just imagine what he can do with guys like Darnold/Rosen/Mayfield.
He could turn out to be a great coach. I'm just not understanding the hype that he's getting from Giants fans. The ones that are saying we fucked up because we missed out on him. Shurmur looks very smart IMO not buying hype off of one year when the rest of his career has been terrible.
Im basically just saying that I feel he's way too hyped up after what seems like an outlier in Wentz.

Clemmons? Sanchez? McCown? Manziel?

And nobody else did either. I could see if they became good players with someone else, but these guys were duds from the word go.
It's kinda hard to defend a guy who coaches QBs and all of the QBs he's coached have been terrible. If he was the Giants QB coach and our QBs were completing an average of 55% of their passes with a damn near 1:1 TD/INT ratio we'd literally be calling for his head.

Didn't you just use Keenum as an example of coaching up a player who had previously not been particularly impressive? If any of DeFilippo's duds had been his fault, wouldn't at least one of them have been repaired by a subsequent coach?
