My way too early 2018 Giants mock draft

Big Rick in FL : 2/10/2018 10:59 am
I know some people hate mock drafts, but my back is fucked up and I still haven't been to bed. Extremely bored. Just did my first Fanspeak mock draft. Let me know what you think. I drafted under the assumption that we are going to run a 3-4 defense with a lot of blitzing and a lot of press man coverage.

2nd - Sam Darnold QB USC
Both Rosen & Darnold were available. I prefer Rosen as a pure passer, but his injuries worry me. I also think Darnold is the closest thing to Eli personality wise so I think he's the guy the Giants would take.

34th - Isaiah Wynn OG Georgia
Absolute animal of an offensive lineman. I'm not sure if he'll be there at this pick, but since he was I'm going to take him. I believe Sy'56 had him rated ahead of Q. Nelson.

66th - Uchenna Nwosu EDGE/OLB USC
With the Giants moving to a 3-4 they need more pass rushers from the OLB position. Super athletic off the edge. Really fluid athlete. Needs to get stronger, but he can rush the passer. Started playing football later in life, but has flashed big time potential. Basically played 2 years at USC. Had 20.5 TFL and 12.5 sacks. Really came on this past year though. His best football is ahead of him.

98th - Josey Jewell ILB Iowa
Sean Lee/Chris Borland clone IMO. Always around the ball. Always making big plays. Right place at the right time. Isn't the most athletic guy and if we were running a 4-3 I'd have probably looked elsewhere. Just a very good solid football player who will come through when you need him. He's a guy who will have 100+ tackles a year. Captain of the defense type guy. Was named as a permanent captain as a sophomore. Only Sophomore to be named captain under Kirk Ferentz.

137th *Compensatory pick* - Royce Freeman RB Oregon
One of my favorite RBs in college football the last few years. Well rounded RB. Very good runner, good pass catcher & solid in pass protection. Averaged 6 YPC for his career and 10 yards per catch. Left Oregon with 6500 yards from scrimmage and 64 TDs. I think he will be a good starter in the NFL. Guys like him are exactly why I wouldn't take Barkley at 2.

141st - Allen Lazard WR Iowa State
Isn't very explosive, but he's got great size at 6'4 225 and you can tell. Not afraid to go over the middle. Uses his size to bully CBs. Good at making adjustments to go up and get the ball. I think he's a perfect compliment to Odell, Shepard & Engram. Good in the red zone and had 26 career TDs.

179th - Holton Hill CB Texas
Big physical CB at 6'3 200-205. Good in press coverage. Has no problem coming up to make tackles. Not sure if he will be available here. If he didn't have off the field trouble he'd be long gone IMO, but he does. Was suspended for the last 3 games of the season. Either way he's a guy you take a chance on in the 6th round. He's a guy you can win big on if he keeps his head on straight. If not you cut him and it's only a 6th round pick.
I'd

be happy with this draft. Seems plausable. Good job.

Especially Wynn, Jewell and Owusu
That’s a good draft Rick. What other o-linemen were available at the

Top of round 2?
Great job
Jay on the Island : 2/10/2018 11:12 am : link
I love your first two picks. I like Owusu as well and this team needs an ER but I would prefer that they bring in a developmental OT in round 3 like an O'Neill, Cappa, etc plus add Wyatt Heller with their first 4th round pick. Wynn is going to be a stud IMO and his versatility would be very useful to the Giants rebuilding line. Wynn is like a better, shorter Justin Pugh. If Wynn was 2-3 inches taller he would be a top 10 pick. Wynn is very athletic and he is a day one starter.
Wynn at #34
Jimmy Googs : 2/10/2018 11:13 am : link
would fabulous.

And also highly unlikely he smells Rd 2...
Nice mock

Hope ur back feels better
Holton Hill goes by third round
Holton Hill

Was one of our best players on the team. Nice risk/reward pick.
Very nice draft Rick

I really like the idea of going back to back LB.
Love it
NYG07 : 2/10/2018 11:29 am : link
I also love the idea of switching to a 3-4. Nice job Rick.
Pretty much tracks with what I’m thinking
Reb8thVA : 2/10/2018 11:32 am : link
Except I’m probably taking another OL instead of Jewel. I like the Nwosu pick. If you are selecting Wynn to play guard what is your solution for the OT problem?
Nwosu
Breeze_94 : 2/10/2018 11:39 am : link
is one of my favorite round 3 guys.

Also like Wynn, Darnold, and Freeman picks
There were 2 other OL I considered
Big Rick in FL : 2/10/2018 11:43 am : link
Will Hernandez was there as was Billy Price. I like both of them a lot but I'd prefer an OG to a OC simply because the kind of money OGs are getting nowadays.
Nice! Really nice!
Red Dog : 2/10/2018 12:06 pm : link
Way better than most mocks from fans or media.

My only minor quibble would be to get an OT in there somewhere.

Unfortunately it's a very weak draft for OTs and the value wasn't there. Didn't want to just get an OT for the sake of getting one while passing on better value.
I'd be happy with that

.
Nice draft
adamg : 2/10/2018 12:29 pm : link
I prefer Darius Leonard to Nwosu. I think if Jewell falls to our 4th, he and Leonard would be an incredible upgrade to the LB spot. Could push Goodson to OLB opposite Vernon and have him closer to the LOS where I think he's a better fit.

Also not a big fan of Freeman. Seems like he could be a very hit or miss guy.

Would love Darnold and a top OL with the first 2 picks. I hope that's how they go.
Just did one on fanspeak too
Earl the goat : 2/10/2018 12:38 pm : link
1. Barkley RB
2. Davenport DE
3. Okurofor OT
4. Hughes CB
4. Ballage RB
5. Hill CB
6. Bozeman C

I took two CBs because I don’t think DRC stays and Apple is an issue
Hil has too much value to be there in 5th round
Two RBs because that’s Gettleman. Gallman becomes third back
Darkwa is a FA. And Perkins sucks

1-2 punch with Barkley and Ballage

I haven't got around to watching Leonard yet, but I'm going to soon. Is he a EDGE/rush LB or is he an off the ball LB? Thanks!
34 & 66

Would be gold. I disagree at 2, but it will be a Q.
Nice.
old man : 2/10/2018 2:24 pm : link
But I think Cleveland takes Darnold, prefer Price @34, and I think Jewell is gone by 9; Hill is round 3/4 in most other mocks.
But if your mock happened, I think we get 2-3 immediate starters, 1-2 more later in '18 or early'19, then Darnold in '19, or '20 for sure.
nice to see your thinking

Laying in bed on my phone Sir. Couldn't sleep so I couldn't go to work today. Nothing helps it anyway. Got into a car accident almost 2 years ago. They want to do surgery, but it's not worth the risk to me. I'll be fine for weeks at a time and then have a night like last night where I wake up and can barely move.

Firstly, there's not a lot of games out there on YouTube so if you find a bunch share them. Also, he plays against lesser competition because he's at SC State.

But, he looks like he can do it all. I'd put him as a MLB and nickle LB who can rush on occasion. In some ways, he looks like a more athletic BJ Goodson.

Yeah I figured it's going to be a tough task finding much on him. I'm probably going to try to find something tonight or tomorrow. I'll let you know for sure if I find something good.
Nice mock although I think Darnold goes to the Browns...

These are the two I saw on YouTube (the combine will be integral to see where he'll end up imo):

Leonard vs. NC Central 2017

Leonard vs. UCF 2016

In this draft Barkley went #1 so they were both available.

I could also see this happening in real life. They can draft a RB at 1 and still get a QB at 4 especially if John Dorsey feels the same way as his good friend Scot McGloughan (Who the Browns just hired). Which I obviously have no clue if he does. When Scot was unemployed he went on record numerous times saying he preferred Mayfield to Darnold/Rosen/Allen. So they could very well go Barkley at 1 and Mayfield at 4.

Also a rumor that's been going around for a little while and from a bunch of different sources is that the Browns are going to take Josh Allen with the 1st pick. Which would be great and would leave the Giants with their choice of the 2 best QBs. Works the same if they choose Allen/Barkley/Mayfield. If both Darnold & Rosen are on the board the Giants are going to take Darnold IMO. He's got the higher upside, no injury history and his attitude & demeanor is very similar to Eli.
Good job Big Rick

I like a few of those picks. No to Jewell and no to Freeman. Not a fan of either.

I have a bunch of nagging injuries myself. In 2009, I got a compression fracture on L3. Failed surgery. For good measure I had another slip & fall at home and in Jan 2017 I became the proud owner of a fractured L9,L10,L12. (1 month earlier I suffered a stroke that ruined my speech & handwriting. WTH???)

Ok, Ok, I can hear the little violin. See if you can get a Tens Unit for your back. Use often. Then buy stock in Naproxen Sodium and it will become your friend.
