Rosen talks about character concerns and draft preparation

Milton : 2/12/2018 5:19 am
Not sure if this has been posted already, I'm seeing it for the first time (although parts seem familiar).

Some choice quotes (full article linked below)...
Quote:
"I wanted to win more," said Rosen, who was 6-5 in the games he did start last year. “To be honest, I really didn't accomplish a lot of the goals that I set out to do, which was really frustrating. All of the individual stuff kind of comes along with team success."
Quote:
Rosen, who turns 21 on Saturday, admits he spent last weekend "a little bit in work mode kind of" when meeting with the wide range of NFL influencers that attend Super Bowl-related events. "I had a suit on and was trying to be very politically correct and put together," Rosen said. "I talked to a lot of different people about a lot of different things; a lot about football and some that had nothing to do with football. And then a lot about how to conduct myself on the field, off the field.
Quote:
Asked what he believes is the biggest question NFL teams have about his makeup as a person, Rosen said, "There’s been some people talking about my love for the game or whatever, whether it’s my main interest. I'm just really excited to get in front of them and show them who I really am and, once they draft me, show them exactly how hard I do work."
Quote:
"You don’t have any other distractions (in the NFL)," said Rosen, an economics major who received honorable mention on the 2017 Pac 12 All-Academic football team. "You don’t have school, you don’t have all that stuff. You have an agent and a money manager where you can basically deflect everything that can possibly get into your head. You can just focus on football. That’s what I've never been able to do before. I'm really excited to put all of my time into that."

That's good that he realizes he didn't win enough.

UCLA was 18-20 during his 3 seasons with 3rd, 4th and 5th place finishes in their division within the PAC 12.
I read that I think, we may nbot learn from the Eli experience

Eli Apple that is.

He sounds like he's working too hard to reassure folks.
Not sure about no other distractions

In the NFL.
All this "character" talk is such garbage

The only question in my mind is his health.
What that tells me
chopperhatch : 2/12/2018 7:38 am : link
Is that Risen's people have schooled him well on what teams want to hear from him.

Don't

care about his "character" concerns. Care about his injuries.
Not conerned about his character concerns OR his injuries
David B. : 2/12/2018 8:51 am : link
The Giants will do their due diligence and figure out if he's a risk. He's not even 21 yet. He's a kid. He's not done growing mentally or physically. His frame will likely cary another 10+ lbs of muscle once he gets into a NFL weight training program, which will help him with the rigors of the job.

I'm a little concerned with the health factor
Heisenberg : 2/12/2018 8:55 am : link
The character concerns? Not at all, really.
Sounds like he's in damage control mode

I'm apt to pay more attention to what a guy says when he isn't ttrying to get a $25M payday. That's the real guy you're getting. But good for him for trying.
With all the discussion about head injuries
TMS : 2/12/2018 9:17 am : link
in FB; to take someone who has two concussions already before he is 21 seems like a huge gamble. Especially with the 2nd pick in the draft. We know ELI is starting next year at least, so we are not under pressure to start a new QB right away. We need help now not in two or three years. Trade down get more picks mo.
Does he need football?
est1986 : 2/12/2018 9:34 am : link
Does he love football? As the quarterback what kind of teammate is he? What kind of leader is he? Why was he in concussion protocol for about a month? And what is his full injury history? 8-5, 3-3, and 6-5 is his year by year win-lose record... so the guy can’t win at the college level, what makes you think he will be winner as a pro? Some of them are irrelevant questions but they won’t seem so to someone looking to take him top 5...
To me the character stuff was overblown any way
Emil : 2/12/2018 9:37 am : link
Rosen's only problem is that he speaks his mind when he probably shouldn't. A little more discretion will go a long way with him. Start with letting someone manager your social media accounts. My only red flag with him has always been health.

Regardless, I am nearly convinced the Giants will have their pick of QBs at #2 if they don't trade the pick. I think Cleveland will take Barkley or Chubb at #1 (probably Chubb) and with the idea that they can grab one of the top 4 QBs at #4--probably Mayfield.
Youth and lack of self-awareness probably hurdles for him to grow past
JonC : 2/12/2018 9:42 am : link
and it is for all of us.
In Addition To Rosen's Injury Concerns
Trainmaster : 2/12/2018 9:50 am : link
when I've seen him interviewed or read the quotes about him, I'm getting a little "Johnny Manziel" vibe from him.

I really, really hope the Giants don't draft him. I want Barkley, but could live with Darnold or a trade down.

This kid scares me.

I am concerned about his injuries
Rudy5757 : 2/12/2018 9:54 am : link
but his answers don't seem to scream of a guy that loves football. He seems more worried about money. His excuse is outside distractions, this is NY where there will be more distractions than anywhere. NY may not be the place for him.

Injuries are a major concern. He doesn't seem like a 10 year player health wise. I hope Cleveland takes him out of our equation. The talent is there but I don't see the long term qb here concussions these days are career enders.
I think there are character concerns
rasbutant : 2/12/2018 10:08 am : link
They aren't your typical getting in trouble concerns. They are about his mental toughness. How does he respond when things aren't going right. Can he elevate a team with not only his play but also his leadership. Will he just skate by on his nature talent???
The media bias vs Rosen is as bad as Ive seen on a draftee
twostepgiants : 2/12/2018 10:15 am : link
" Rosen's NFL Draft prep includes managing own feelings for Eagles"

What kind of headline is that?

How is this anything but a humanizing story?

"Rosen paid homage to both on Instagram by posting a photo of himself wearing an Eagles jacket and cap at age 14. The caption read that Rosen’s grandma “said she would die if the Eagles ever got back to the Super Bowl and got revenge" for losing to New England in Super Bowl 39.

"I just gave her a call, relieved to hear her voice," Rosen wrote earlier this week.

And this part.

"While attending Super Bowl 52 pregame festivities in Minneapolis, Rosen had the chance to meet Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

"I kind of just geeked out a little bit," a laughing Rosen told co-host Gil Brandt and me Wednesday night on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "I was like, 'Hey, my grandma’s the world’s largest Eagles fan. I grew up watching you guys. And it’s just so cool to meet you.'"

Somehow this is crafted into some kind of negative with Sporting News headline?

Where do you get "more comcerned about money" from that piece? He said he wants to hire a guy to manage his money do he can do nothing but concentrate on football.
Oh FFS
jeff57 : 2/12/2018 10:22 am : link
The outside distraction comment was in relation to being able to maintain sufficient attention to school work while playing big time football. I don't think he'll be taking classes during the season as a pro.
This guy will be a 21 year old millionaire in a few months
twostepgiants : 2/12/2018 10:34 am : link
The idea to hire someone to manage his finances is a very smart thing to do and misuse of this has been a major problem for many an NFL rookie

This is a plus. Not a negative despite Sporting News attempt to make into one. But they see him as "too smart for his good". Whatever that means

Id like someone to name a single football player in NFL history whose problem was they were "too smart"

The Apple lesson is not to completely ignore information and solely rely upon tangibles. That's what's being done here. Doesn't mean the other stuff should be over-weighted; just not discarded.

I can agree with that. I think he has the potential to be special, he just has to reel in a little bit.

Where do some of you come up with this bullshit? He never used distractions as an excuse, but was excited to be able to become a better player when he can focus solely on that. NBA rookie Donovan Mitchell said pretty much the same thing about becoming a much better player while in the NBA, no classes means you have more time to work out, practice and prepare.

And when did he say he was looking forward to making money? I'm sorry, but a lot of the "he doesn't love the game", or "he doesn't need the game", or "he's only in it for the money" reeks of anti-semitism.

Drew Brees' dad is pretty wealthy, did anyone question his desire? Or Russel Wilson? It is one thing to question the concussions at the end of the season, those are legitimate concerns, but the fact that he grew up in a well-to-do family is utter bullshit.
TBH, my base assumption about anyone in any walk of liife

Definitely one of those three.

Or they could be nothing alike. Cutler had the same issues at Purdue. A 57% passer who struggled with accuracy and turned the ball over too much. Rosen is more accurate, and more careful with the ball.
Character assassination in the draft is so weird
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/12/2018 11:33 am : link
Especially when it happens to guys who don't have concerns. Never understood why we go to lengths to manufacture them. Should be more concerned about the Ruben Fosters of the sport.

Weird, I could have sworn Cutler went to Vanderbilt.

Good catch, I must have been thinking Purdue when I referenced Brees in an earlier post.

Cutler and Rosen are NOTHING alike. Their footwork in the pocket is the polar opposite. Their throwing mechanics are NOTHING alike. This comp continues to get recycled and it's total trash. I would personally be embarrassed to have my name tied to a Rosen-Cutler comparison.

Oh I got that, but you don't arrive at the current footwork, throwing mechanics, and ability to move safeties with your eyes that we see from Rosen at just 21 years old without working your ass off, day in, and day out. Cutler never had that passion to be the best and it reflected in his mechanics, footwork, etc.
