Veldheer becomes available.
New HC...new scheme( I. think)...most of all they liked him at the signing. Another so much last year( unless he fits better in a new scheme).
I like Veldheer and Cordy Glenn with realistic expectations..
At the right price either would be a good stop gap addition.
Pick up a rock like Norwell, sign Glenn for 2 years, and draft some more OL help, and things are looking up.
And I think that's the way it needs to be looked at. The options available at LT are scarce. Currently it's Solder and then a cliff. There's also no guarantee he becomes a FA, there are even talks he may retire.
a drastic reduction in salary on any of these Veterans, the injury risk is not worth it.
Peters would be the only guy to role the dice on but that would mean not picking up Flowers 5th year.
honest question: does it seem reasonable that Flowers will play up to earn the $12M+ 5th yr option? I was thinking he'll end up as some other teams DJ Fluker.

Flowers 5th year option has no bearing on building the OL going forward. The deadline for electing to pick up the 5th year option is in May. Suffice to say that Flowers' body of work up to this point has not warranted the guaranteed salary of $14.44M for 2019. This is his last year of cost controlled salary from his rookie deal. Whether he has a future in this league will be determined by what he is able to do this season.
Fluker's contract was extended for the 1st round draft pick allowance after year 3 but then didn't see that year as he was cut after year 4.
I can't see the Giants extending Fluker now (needs to be done within the next couple of months) based on his body of work.
There are however a couple of angles that the Giants could approach this.
- Do what San Diego did in hopes that Flowers improves in year 4 and earns that 5th year. I don't see Flowers showing that he is worth $15m on a one year deal. It does however give you 2 full years to draft a replacement (free agent tackles aren't cheap) or more time to negotiate with him. You can even cut him next year after the draft.
- Don't extend him. This makes the most sense. If he is playing well in training camp/early in the year, you still have time to extend him in season or prior to free agency. I think this makes most sense as Flowers is improving enough to probably be an adequate or even average starter and is still young. If you extend then cut him, he will in almost all probability not look to resign and he wouldn't factor into the free agency formula.

Thanks guys. I couldn't see how things would end in anything other than release after 2018.

My two cents is that one blue goose is better than three patch ups. In free agency. And look for bonafide blue gooses in draft as well.
Starting the season with two greats and a huge pile of questions to fit in is better than startting with ten or eleven questions.
