Potential Cap Casualties around the league

Breeze_94 : 2/13/2018 3:10 pm
is there anyone rumored to being cut that you guys would be interested in?

For me, I am intrigued by

OT Jared Veldheer: A potential stop gap veteran solution who can play either tackle position. Makes sense if we draft an OT on day 2. Bit injury prone, but could be cheap.

OG Laken Tomlinson: Still young, he actually played pretty decent for SF. Former first round pick with some talent. Could be a nice hidden value signing. Had an AV (approx value) of 7 last season, which is higher than any G the Giants have.

LB Mark Barron- apparently he is on the outs in LA because he is owed a ton of $. I like his fit in Bettcher's scheme. Very similar to Deonne Bucannon (undersized LB, former safety with good speed at the position). 28 years old.

OLB Pernell McPhee. He could be a great option as an OLB in the 3-4. He is a solid pass-rusher and good against the run. Probably won't cost more than 4-5mil a year.
Tomlinson is very intriguing

We need to take chances on young players like him at the right price.
Barron looks good

He might be expensive though.
Dwight Freeney

He'll be 38 next week and on his last legs on his HOF career. Although I'd be interested in Freeney as a situational pass rusher on this team.

Freeney in 2015, playing under our DC James Bettcher, Freeney racked up 8 sacks in limited playing time as a rotational DE in the Cardinals defense.
Jason Peters

His reserve played well, he'll be 36 and coming off an injury. I think he'll be cut. Would be the perfect cheap stop-gap that would allow us to develop longterm solution at a position that is difficult to fill.

Hard to believe that Peters at 36, coming off an ACL, is a candidate for anything but retirement.
I'd stay away from anyone with an injury history,

especially one at the tail end of his career. When has signing oft-injured players worked out for us?
Definitely a strong possibility

But he was talking comeback as early as SB media day. Who knows if that holds true if he's looking at playing for a new team though.

Bettcher was the Colts LB Coach in Indy when Freeney became a OLB.
How is Tomlinson a potential cap casualty?

Isn’t he still on his rookie deal? The 49ers have a ton of cap space, why would they let him go?
