a one year deal he might be a decent stopgap if the Giants don't address linebacker in the draft this year because they are focusing on other positions. At 35 his contract should be cap friendly.
DJ would be the perfect stop gap. Hopefully he'll accept a 1 year deal and one look at our LB depth chart should show Johnson that he'll have the opportunity to play a lot next year.
new scheme may mean guys like OV, Moss and even JPP might see time as standup rush players (OLB's essentially). If so, then we some of the current group might have new uses and play better and what we still need at LB will be different than what it appeared like during the 2017 season.
Are the Giants switching to a 3-4? Or are they just going to be a hybrid defense between 4-3 and 3-4? I think I read an article by Dan Duggan recently where he said they would be a 3-4 defense.
If they do indeed switch, Johnson would definitely be a nice stop gap at inside linebacker with Goodson.

Nothing definite, but few teams in the league stick to "4-3" or "3-4" anymore. Schemes are too modern and complex now to be cookie cutter.
Some vet DEs and LBs that are experienced in 3-4 to facilitate guys like OV Jpp Moss Tomlinson Dennard get the feel of the Bettcher D, at least through mid camp, even if theydont make the final 53.
A guy like DJ it he has anything left would be a nice multipurpose signing.
We have too many holes on this roster to address all the needs in one off-season. We need veteran stop gaps like a Derrick Johnson or a Dwight Freeney for a year in our system until with can acquire long term solutions in the next couple of seasons.
Freeney for example excelled in James Bettcher's defense with the Cardinals in 2015 as a rotational DE and racked up 8 sacks. Even at 38 years old if Freeney could provide both JPP and Olivier Vernon a breather, while still providing a solid pass rush on 3rd downs, he'll be a valuable backup.
It will take 5-8 games to learn a new defense, no matter what defense
It may take a whole season before the defense is a real asset.
Remember how long it took for the Giants to catch on to Spags 4-3 defense in 2007, even though they were already playing a 4-3? This will probably take much longer, especially if it really is a hybrid.
I think we can hope that his defense is so flexible that he can adapt it to the skill set of the current players and that the players are flexible enough to embrace it.

Did you just pull a number out of your ass and try and sound authoritative about it?
There are quite a few first year defensive coordinators who ran different defenses than the previous coach who succeeded, and a lot of times it comes year 1 in a HC change.
When Ron Rivera took over the Panthers, the D improved right away. The Jags D turned around this year under Marrone. Teams like the Raiders and chargers saw D's have immediate turnarounds. It happens quite a bit.
Heck, even when Spags first took over, we had a really bad first two games and then did well the remainder of the year.

Johnson for a year seems like a good choice.

I think OV would be great at OLB in a 3-4. I see JPP more as a Richard Seymour 3-4 inside DE.
