On Thomas McGaughey: “I knew Thomas in the profession, and after having a chance to visit with him, I knew it would be a perfect fit here. He’s an outstanding coach. He coached top 10 units in special teams.”
So, Did Pat Shurmur get the Offensive Coordinator he wanted... Â
...or did he defer to Dave Gettleman with Mike Shula?
I looked at Shurmur's and Shula's coaching backgrounda, and I saw no obvious overlap/connection.
I'm tkaing it on faith that Shurmur agreed because Shula was the best fit, but maybe I'd feel a little more confortable had Shurmur brought someone in he was used to working with.

Mike Shula has coached under Dave Wannstedt (along with Ron Rivera) and Ron Rivera. Ron Rivera was also LB Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999-2003 when Pat Shurmur was first TE/OL Coach then QB Coach. Not to mention Pat's uncle, Fritz Shurmur had a 20+ year coaching career in NFL until he passed away from cancer (otherwise it would have been longer)
I get that DeFillipo and Stefanski were the top choices for OC Â
with a few more speculated on in social media and the press. But does anyone outside of Shurmur actually know how many OC candidates he interviewed? I'd guess that quite a few may have taken the unusual step of contacting Shurmur to inquire about the job. So, is it so out of bounds that Shula was the best of a group of candidates and was selected based on his conversations with Shurmur?

Also Shumur has ties to Norv Turner and his offense. Rivera brought that offense to Carolina as well.
change since Red went in for Allie. I’m 62. Maybe it’s just my age. I’ve never been less interested or enthusiastic about a new coach & his staff , other than when Handley was trotted out in May of ‘91.
My very best to these guys. I hope they turn out to be a juggernaut .

Same age as you RetroJint and kinda feel the same. Maybe it's just a generational thing! {:-)

Seems the fact that Shurmur is going to call plays probably limited the candidates interested and do we know whether the Vikings allowed Stefanski to interview?
I’m the same age as well (season tix from ‘72 thru ‘93 before moving to Raleigh) .... I guess I could say I’ve always looked to the positive with all new coaches (even Ray H ) ... but more often than not I’ve been wrong... especially burned by Benny the bum ... so maybe being neutral on the new guy is ok ... let’s reconvene in a year.

I believe pretty strongly that neither of you probably even had a clue who he was. Or Fox. Or Payton.
But carry on.
Keep tinkering with it until it starts working again...
