Different coaches and medical yet same injury issues so far. Swarzak, Cespedes join the other 10 guys w injuries.

And pitching looks like it has A LOT of work to do already. This zen master Callaway is either going to back his talk w an epic career or become a complete joke in 2 years.

Strained quads, strained hamstrings, sprained ankle, plantar fasciitis...

These are just aches and pains? Dont think so.

Lower back soreness in a pitcher is concerning. Cespedes shoulder could just be soreness but the dude is ALWAYS injured so who the hell knows.

The point is that I doubt every team is dealing with this many injuries a week into spring training. Its just more of the same with the Mets. We cant have nice things.

the comments about degrom...
Italianju : 2/28/2018 8:30 am : link
were more about Callaway saying he wanted his pitchers to get 5-6 spring training starts and if Degrom doesnt get out there soon it will be hard to hit that number. He wasnt saying that he might still be injured on opening day.

Im concerned cause im a Mets fan and we have seen this story before, but these injuries do just seem like early camp aches. Lagares is running at 90% they said. DeGrom seems close to getting on the mound, Swarzak says he is fine (who knows i guess), and Bruce returned yesterday.
Legares

If its normal aches and pains then why not just say that?
PhiPsi125 : 2/28/2018 8:57 am : link
Why make a big production out of it? You can play, and should play, through normal aches and pains. But when I hear pulled this or strained that, it doesnt scream aches and pains to me.

Why do we need to hear every time a player has a tummyache or a pinched genital? Keep that shit in house.

Lagares is ALWAYS hurt. One thing not getting enough coverage is relying on all of Lagares/Nimmo/Cespedes/Conforto given the lack of AA/AAA OF depth.
Outside of Matz getting roughed up

In the second inning yesterday, the pitching has actually looked good. Gsellman, Lugo, Montero, Wheeler, and of course Thor all had nice starts. Interested to see Harvey/Wheeler today.

Not only is Lagares always hurt but his style of play is conducive to this always being the case. I'm not particularly concerned with Conforto (once he is 100%) but the others are legit "injury"??. Bruce was a necessary (if not someone similar) add otherwise we'd be in deep trouble. Zach Borenstein and MDD = trash

And Cespedes missed half of last year and about 30 games in 2016 while deGrom also missed a chunk in 2016.

So, if this is the "same old" for each guy, that's not necessarily a good thing.

Side note - I know he's dealt with some lat/other issues, but Jake's FIP is going the wrong way...

2014: 2.67
2015: 2.70
2016: 3.32
2017: 3.50
I keep saying it but you got to keep your core guys/superstars

Healthy. At least for the most part (every player misses a week here or there) List off any teams top 5 players and then subtract 2 or more of those off the team due to injury and that teams going to be in a world of hurt.
My top 5/key guys are Thor/deGrom/Conforto/Cespedes/Familia.

We are already down Conforto to start. Adding DeGrom to the list would be tough. Hopefully, its minor and hes fine.

7 homers was in 2016. OPS over .900... IN THE PCL with a 30% k-rate, that's a bad player.
ZIPS
DanMetroMan : 2/28/2018 10:45 am : link
projects a line of .221/.283/.378 with a 79 wRC+ and a 35% K-rate. HORRENDOUS.
How many players
DanMetroMan : 2/28/2018 10:46 am : link
posted a 900+ OPS in the PCL last year? Oh only 13, including Travis Taijeron. 2 players struck out more than Borenstein...2.
Duda signs with Royals for just under 4 mil
ZGiants98 : 2/28/2018 10:53 am : link
Nice bargain for them.
It'll be interesting to see
Metnut : 2/28/2018 10:56 am : link
how Duda does in KC. He was pretty solid here and Zips and Steamer both project much better production from Duda than from either AGonz or Smith.

I wonder if Mets would've kept him to compete with Smith rather than AGonz if they knew he would've ended up signing so cheaply.
I think the whole point of signing AGone
ZGiants98 : 2/28/2018 10:59 am : link
Is to give Smith a little more time, create a little competition, and then be able to cut him easily. If you sign Duda, I think hes your 2018 starter for the whole year.
HAAAAAAAA
Shecky : 2/28/2018 10:59 am : link
The running joke with Duda coming up was he needs to play in KC. Wish him the best

Cant wait to see the pain in Dan as he is forced to like Borenstein as the season moves along lol
He isnt a major leaguer, but a perfect AAA signing. Dans comments or not.
Honestly, there were reports
ZGiants98 : 2/28/2018 11:01 am : link
Yesterday it takes AGone two hours to work on his back prior to a game. That sounds like David Wright 2.0. He might not make it out of spring training. Well see.
I'm more optimistic
Metnut : 2/28/2018 11:08 am : link
on Smith than most I think. He looks great in camp. Hopefully this injury is minor because Smith needs as many ABs as he can possibly get.

Duda at $4M to be a bench player or insurance for Smith would be a good price IMO. Hopefully aGonz can at least be servicable for us.

on my "It's February" comment: The reason there's spring training -- even though these guys are really in training year round -- is that they do need to re-sharpen some skills and get back to team baseball activities. If they weren't sore and achy at the beginning of that, something would be weird.

I think in the old days they'd say "Ah, he's just a little sore so we're giving him the day off." Now it's plantar fasciitis or a strain -- whatever it is, we have more details. If it's still an issue in the third week of March, I'll be more worried.

Harvey apparently finished after 2 innings: One hit, one walk, one run. Lots of 95s on the radar gun.
Ehalt says
Metnut : 2/28/2018 1:51 pm : link
Harvey sat at 92-94, 38 pitches, 4 swings and misses and hit 95-96 six times. DiComo saying similar and that he "topped out at 95." Britton says "fastball lived 92-94, touched higher."

We've seen Harvey throwing FBs in the low 90s before and the results have been uniformly awful.

Looks like his velocity is at least improved somewhat from spring training 2017 and that's a good sign. If he can get to 93-96 on the FB by opening day, that's good enough for him to help us if he can locate his secondaries.

Looking forward to seeing how he looks the next few times out and whether he can sustain velocity into the middle innings.
.
arcarsenal : 2/28/2018 2:12 pm : link
Not a bad start for Harvey - I'll take it.

He's going to be really important to our success this year.

Something close to the 2015 and before version of Matt would be huge - not expecting this. But also not expecting him to be quite as bad as he's been recently.

If we get something in the middle, but closer to the old Harvey, it'll create a big swing.
23 pitch inning with
Metnut : 2/28/2018 2:27 pm : link
a few wild pitches for Wheeler.

Ehalt says (on Wheeler) "velocity was pretty steady 94. He was 95-97 the other day. Did top out at 96 for one pitch today"
Harvey
Shecky : 2/28/2018 2:32 pm : link
Dont look st the gun. And he needs to not look either. He cant blow it by anyone anymore. Hes got to get that through his stubbornness and ego. Today was a GREAT lesson for him on transforming into a pitcher. Vargas could be huge for that reason alone.

Thor envy could be the worst thing to happen to anyone on this staff.
Sounds like Wheeler lol
ZGiants98 : 2/28/2018 2:37 pm : link

Anthony DiComo

@AnthonyDiComo
Zack Wheeler hit 96 mph during the fourth. His ball was moving, for better and for worse. Wheeler made Freddie Freeman look silly on an 88-mph slider, striking out two. But he also allowed a run to score on consecutive wild pitches, and needed 26 pitches to record three outs.

Im looking for two things from Harvey...
ZGiants98 : 2/28/2018 2:44 pm : link
Can he control his fastball/slider because those pitches were all over the place last year. 2. Can he maintain his 95/96 mph velocity into the 6th inning because if he can... thats plenty. Last year he was wiped by the 5th.
.
arcarsenal : 2/28/2018 2:53 pm : link
For a guy like Harvey, what happens to the velo? It's just a product of the injuries/rehab?

I remember when Harvey hit ST in 2015 after missing all of 2014, he was hitting 99 right out of the gates and it was like he was never injured at all.

The TJS didn't seem to really take anything away from him - he probably had the best first season back from TJS that I can recall off hand.

But then the TOS and other stuff - I'm guessing that's where he lost a few mph.

Wonder if he can get that back or if it's just a matter of learning to be more of a pitcher and less of a thrower (which he should obviously be doing either way)
Ill took a moving 93 two seemer
Shecky : 2/28/2018 2:58 pm : link
Over a gunned 96 flat four seemer by Harvey in the 6th any day of the week.
He just needs to realize hes got some weapons. He can blow it by a guy who isnt expecting it. But not by a guy sitting on it.

total non-expert guess, but the more injuries/trauma/procedures anyone undergoes the more there's scar tissue and other stuff that limits flexibility. With that many issues needing to be corrected with his arm I'd just imagine there's some loss of the dynamic arm movement and rotation. I still have optimism that he can be a good pitcher and hit the mid 90's, but I'd be shocked if he ever gets back to the point of anyone comparing his stuff to Thor's.

Even though he went hitless I like seeing Rosario in the leadoff spot. If he can handle that role it's a big impact throughout the entire lineup. Rosario - Conforto - Cespedes is an exciting 1 - 2 - 3.

Also nice to see Nimmo homer at the top of the order. And a walk. @Shecky - how has his defense looked in CF?

Some hits for Alonso, Nido, and Cecchini. Other than Alonso there's not much expected of the position players at the upper levels so if any of those guys (Guillorme included) can surprise it would be nice. A breakout guy at C or 2B would be a big boost. Depending on the rest of the lineup, a light hit but excellent defender at either position could play.

Jeff Sullivan on Matz
Metnut : 2/28/2018 3:40 pm : link
Mets vs Astros

Steven Matz

FB: 92-94 mph (straight)
CB: 78-80 mph (no feel)
CH: 84-85 mph

After going on the DL (elbow x2) twice last season, I wanted to see how he looked. He had no swing-and-miss in his game with his breaking balls being off. Theres nothing above average in his game besides maybe his fastball velocity. He looked like a pitcher who will put up a 6 K/9, 3 BB/9 and a 1.5 HR/9.

(Not trying to be negative here, just trying to post real observations on the Mets)
That's Jeff Zimmerman
Metnut : 2/28/2018 3:43 pm : link
not Sullivan. Another interesting point noted by Zimmerman is that even at the very beginning of spring training, most pitchers are working at their in-game velocity and any significant increases are unusual. Spring training is more about increasing workload rather gaining velocity as the season approaches.

Hes never been or will be a Legares out there, but who is right?
He looks very good. Seems to be getting some really good reads/jumps. Apparently worked hard on his defense this offseason, paying dividends. Like he keep saying somethings different, he seems very comfortable.

Not sure why Wheeler didnt come out for a second inning yet, he was supposed to pitch 2. Only guesses for now are high count or they saw something mechanical they wanted to work on. I know it wasnt health related, he threw after the game too.

Man, I absolutely LOVE this time of the year.

Wonder if he can get that back or if it's just a matter of learning to be more of a pitcher and less of a thrower (which he should obviously be doing either way)

total non-expert guess, but the more injuries/trauma/procedures anyone undergoes the more there's scar tissue and other stuff that limits flexibility.

Yeah, that's most likely the explanation.

Every now and then, you see a guy who has his velo jump up out of nowhere. Charlie Morton did it last year - he was never a guy who was known as being a hard thrower, and then suddenly last year he was touching 97 and 98.

He literally said all he did was throw harder. The increased velo came with some really good results, too. K-rate increased quite a bit.

Probably not recommended but it always interests me when a guy in his 30's suddenly finds a few extra ticks on his FB.

They said that Wheeler threw too many pitches in his one inning so didn't come out for the second. He threw an extra 10-15 pitches on the side after he was taken out.

arcarsenal : 2/28/2018 3:58 pm : link
Yeah, Verlander has always been sort of unique - he would routinely save those 99/100 mph heaters for when he really wanted to blow one by a hitter to get a K and sit in the mid 90's most of the time otherwise.

He definitely looked like he was falling off after 2014 - he figured something out last year and has been Cy Young good again since going to HOU. Utterly dominant there.
It's only one start
Metnut : 2/28/2018 4:00 pm : link
but if Matz doesn't impress and Wheeler continues to be himself, I wonder if the door is open for Gsellmen or Montero to steal the 5th starter role out of camp (I'm assuming Vargas is safe). They each looked better than Matz or Wheeler (when adding in today) so far.

Hopefully this turns into a fun camp long battle with the guys pushing each other to be better.

That's part of what makes pitching so fascinating since physics are just impossible when a 150 pound Pedro Martinez can throw as hard as 250 pound Syndergaard. Harvey has had enough bad luck that I think (hope) he's due for a good season. Too much of a competitor and at this point i'd guess he's been through enough to lose at least some of his immaturity. Think back to when this happened and it feels like a lifetime ago.

Harvey's FB is still fast enough, IF
81_Great_Dane : 2/28/2018 6:50 pm : link
he has command of his offspeed pitches and can work "in and out," throwing off batters' timing.

I'm old enough to remember Frank Tanana as a hard thrower who became a master junkballer after arm problems. Some guys master their stuff well enough to do it. It'd be nice if Harvey could. He might come out of the whole experience a better teammate too.

arcarsenal : 2/28/2018 7:28 pm : link
It was a little more than that for Verlander -

The Astros are running a very progressive/analytical ship - he found some mechanical stuff that made a huge difference.

Look at the numbers he posted before he got to HOU and the numbers he posted when he was there. Huge difference.

Quote:
In Houston, Verlander found another tool to improve and modernize his game: a super high-speed camera that shows in clear frame-by-frame detail how a baseball leaves a pitchers hand on every pitch. The camera showed Verlander the position of his hand on his slider that needed improvement to give it more tilt. Verlander had always thrown his slider in a way that more resembled a cutter. But with the cameras help, he began to carve off nasty sliders that bore to the back foot of lefthanded hitters.

Last night the Yankees saw a Verlander nobody had ever seen before. He threw 40 sliders, the most he had ever thrown in the 404 times he pitched a big league game. Thirty-one of those 40 sliders were strikes. Verlanders precision with elite stuff was mind-boggling. He threw 31 balls to the 32 batters he faced.

Harvey wasn't healthy heading into 2017 AND
ZGiants98 : 2/28/2018 9:31 pm : link
didn't have an offseason to prepare for 2017. The guy was in a sling. We heard when spring training started last year he wouldn't be 100% recovered until June. To be honest, I dont even know why we put him through that. He should have gone to the minors and worked his way back slowly.

I dont think he's ever going to be pumping 98s again, but assuming his conditioning is a lot better this year and he's another year removed from the surgery and presumably healthy now I think he has a shot to be solid.

He's never going to be "Thor" again but I could see him being a "Cobb" who ironically has had TOS and Tommy John also.

I'd take that to the bank and be thrilled.

Do wheeler and matz still have options? Bc if so then It should rightfully go to gsellman or montero at first if they look better.

Lugo anyone?

Harvey & Wheeler could be in line for bullpen work if they fatigue early but start off electric every game.

Isnt Callaway talking about 4-5 inning starts anyway?

Same. Any thoughts on David Thompson? I read last year that his defense was becoming a positive and he's had a few hits this week.
For back of the rotation pitchers, Lugo and Gsellman are so
PhiPsi125 : 3/1/2018 6:32 pm : link
huge for this club. With this starting 5, theres definitely going to be opportunities for them to pitch. And if the pitch like we know they are capable of, they are amazing depth for our rotation.

Not sure why, but I think Wheeler puts it together this year. The potential for this rotation is off the charts but I feel like weve been talking about potential for years. Just once, lets put it together. FTW!

ZGiants98 : 3/1/2018 7:16 pm : link
How huge just having Syndergaard and DeGrom together and healthy is. We had the best pitching staff overall in baseball in 2016 and number one overall if you just count rotations. Thats without Wheeler for the year, Harvey looking like dogshit and then out for the year, and Matz missing months to injury. Still number one in fWAR and FIP.

If everyone was actually healthy and pitching up to their potential we would probably challenge for best staff of all time. Thats wishful thinking though. In the very least Vargas blocks a guy now. We dont need that though. The 5 aces dream needs to die. It was never realistic. No team has ever had 5 aces. Just give me Thor and DeGrom and Vargas types and we are already practically there to 2016 levels again. The trickle down effect is massive.
Yes, having 5 Aces is a dream. Even having 3 Aces is
PhiPsi125 : 3/1/2018 7:25 pm : link
a dream but that would have been a reality if Harvey didnt have his health issues. Crazy to think about but just not in the cards.

Having Thor and DeGrom plus three #3 type pitchers isnt unrealistic if we ever get health. Big IF.

History tells us that probably wont happen but, damn if it does.

Yup. We still have a chance to have a generational type rotation if all the pieces came together but for the purposes of us getting to the playoffs just give me our two horses (Thor/deGrom) for now. If one of those go down the doors could blow off in a heartbeat again.

Likewise the bullpen has a similar effect. If you have a top 5 closer coupled with just one really good setup guy, you are going to have a top bullpen (cough cough 2016). I think people think all the pitchers are created equal and everyone needs to be amazing.... You have anchors that carry the load and take pressure off everybody else. The closer and setup guy are in during the toughest of situations almost every time. A healthy Familia is worth 4 "decent" relievers. Thor is worth 4 decent starters.

As I keep saying though, you gotta keep your stars healthy. We have the talent. We have the key anchor pieces. A lof of if we get to the finish line is going to be sheer luck now.

Reyes was worth 2fWAR last year and is signed to a major league contract. Zero chance Cecchini is taking his spot in 2018 unless Reyes is injured. As for TJ, he hasnt played much in the majors yet but hes already got over a league average line hitting wise and did things in the minors Cheech could only dream of. Im not saying its impossible but I would definitely have TJ ahead of Cheech when hes healthy.
A log jam

Love to see a young guy become a .280-.300 hitter w some rbi capabilities to hold down 2b for the next 5 years.

Or even that he might not have the most upside. Im saying hes seventh on the depth chart of seven options on the depth chart and is going to have to play other worldly to leapfrog everyone this year.

Depth chart.
To me the only long term possibilities are Cecchini/Guillorme
Eric on Li : 3/3/2018 12:17 am : link
So those are the guys I'd prioritize with playing time if they're showing they are ready. Reyes is a bench guy at this stage of his career. Cabrera's starter level and if he's playing well then you leave him alone, but if not we know he's likely gone after this year. Rivera's hurt and his defense makes it more likely he's a bench guy.

From all reports Guillorme's defense would be an upgrade day 1, and while he needs to hit more he's not hopeless. Great walk/K rate, has hit for a solid average. Cecchini has questions in the field but other than that it's a similar story.

These are the types of prospects that teams like St Lou/SF develop into solid players seemingly out of nowhere and the Mets give up on. Would love to see that trend broken for once.
forgot Flores
Eric on Li : 3/3/2018 12:24 am : link
I don't have a good reason to rule him out as a possible starter at 2nd except that if it was going to happen it would (should) have happened by now. For a long time 2nd seemed like his best defensive position, though he seems to have some defensive miscues no matter where he plays. Other than hammering lefties I'm not sure where they see him fitting in going forward. He's a guy I'd chalk up to being poorly developed by the current FO and previous coaching staff. I'd love to see him grab an every day spot and he clearly has the hitting ability to do it, I just don't think it will happen.
Prioritize playing time
ZGiants98 : 3/3/2018 9:24 am : link
Where? In the majors? Again, I dont see any way Cecchini or Guillorme get any playing time this year without a rash of injuries or just absolute other worldly performances. Theres just no room. 2019? Maybe.

And TJ started throwing already yesterday. Hes not going to be out all year. My guess is hes back by June and even he wont have a spot.
Obviously it all depends on how they're performing
Eric on Li : 3/3/2018 9:40 am : link
but if Cabrera (or Reyes, or Rosario) goes on the DL at some point, which he's done each of the last 2 years, I'd hope one of them will get the call up over someone like Ty Kelly. If they get that call up I'd hope they don't ride the bench in favor of Reyes unless he's producing. I also don't think Cabrera should have that long of a leash if he's not playing well. So "prioritize" in my mind is both of them playing pretty much every day (Guillorme at SS I guess) in AAA and, assuming they are playing well, being the first call-up and getting playing time if there's an injury to a MI.

I actually could see Guillorme get a shot at SS if Rosario missed a huge chunk. For better or worse Reyes is the backup SS at the moment but if Rosario was going to be out for an extended period I could see them want the better defender. Doesnt really help Cheechs case that much though whos likely only position is 2B.

Good article on Plawecki on the athletic ($)
Eric on Li : 3/4/2018 9:48 am : link
Quote:

When I got up here, I got exposed, Plawecki said. I was able to get away with [my swing] all the way up to the big leagues because I had good enough hands to make it work. I had to make some sort of adjustment or else I wasn't going to be around too long.

Having line-drived his way up the Mets organizational system since being drafted out of Purdue, Plawecki realized rather rapidly in 2015 that his cut wasn't going to cut it in the majors. And thus he began what's been a two-year project to rework his swing, with results last season that suggest it's been a success.

It's been evolving since the end of the 2015 season. When I first came up [to the majors], I was super upright and all hands. I had a lot of movement with my hands, Plawecki said. There were a lot of things we had to clean up to make my swing quicker and more compact.

I think I have more hope in him than TDA at this point. Better D, less injury risk, just needs to hit a little bit.
Kevin Plawecki's two-year swing reclamation project seems to be paying dividends - ( New Window )

After virtually every pitch. Its a simple mechanical adjustment that needs to be made. Its early spring. Instead of making the adjustment, hes frustrated.

My guess is he goes in the dugout between innings, its discussed and his pitches are lower in the zone (and successful) for the second inning. Leaving most pitches up, including his curve.

BUT
It was all simple mechanical issues. Yet he was annoyed after almost every pitch. If this were a normal game, Id say it was physical and he just couldnt get comfortable. But it was clearly mental. Mad at himself. After almost every single pitch.
And there was a great example of what we will see more of this year

Harvey in the hill for round two today. Fastballs in the first, offspeed in second and third? His command and getting ahead is the key to his success today.
The most under the radar HUGE news for Mets junkies today is a little pat on the butt to Gimenez as they bring him across from the backfields and let him hang with the big boys today.
Nimmo and Cech in the same lineup finally. Get to laugh twice as much at the pre AB ritual.

Gsellman to LV

Side note - Ojeda was just on the FAN. Went pretty hard on Noah. Said he doesn't think he's learned much of anything after watching him try blowing 100 mph fastballs by hitters rather than working on his actual pitching. Thinks he's got "some Harvey in him" as far as wanting attention, pointed at the shirtless interview, etc.

It'll be interesting to see. Harvey's results with diminished velocity have been really ugly in the recent the past. If he can just be a "good" #3-4 starter for us (doesn't need to be 2015 Harvey), he'd be a real asset and it'd go a long way toward helping this team compete for a playoff spot.

With Matz and Wheeler not looking encouraging at all, I think we're going to need Harvey.

Happy to see some power from the bats the past few days. Nimmo looks to have a more aggressive approach which is the next evolution for him given his already really good eye for the zone. Frazier, Bruce hit bombs the other day, and TDA had an XBH today too.

after the trade to Boston and his velocity ticked a little bit downward last year. That could explain the cool market for him.

they'd need someone who can play the position on the bench at a minimum, even if they start Reyes. Still a few weeks so I'd imagine he won't need the DL, but also no real rush.
Guillorme

is 100% going to have a career. Question is will he hit enough to be a borderline starter. He has to at least be able to occasionally hit on into the gaps. Zero power, zero speed just doesn't play.

that's really bad news if Rosario is out for a while. Reyes was so bad at short last year that I'd rather go with Flores. Hopefully he's at least taking reps there. Either way though, Reyes, Cabrera and Flores aren't exactly inspiring choices at SS if Rosario is out for more than a week.

The other injuries to keep an eye on are Degrom (he still hasn't started in a game yet this spring and is up in the air for opening day) and Conforto (looks like he's hitting off of a tee and on schedule).

We need these key players to be healthy and play as many games as possible. We've seen seemingly minor injuries linger for long periods with this team in the recent past.

WTF? I thought he was going in for an MRI over the weekend? Why would the Mets wait? It is fucking ridiculous how this plays out over and over again - player gets hurt, Mets say he will go in for an MRI, MRI never happens, player more seriously hurt than initially believed. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hopefully, this turns out to be nothing, but the Mets lack of follow through on caring for their players is baffling. Does the MRI cost come right out of Jeffy's pocket? Ugh!

Thanks for dealing with all of us snarky posters! I always appreciate your insight, even if it's a different perspective sometimes than mine.

DeGrom threw 30 pitches and two innings in a simulated game. So far, it looks like he's ok but might miss a start or even just slot 5th or so in the rotation out of camp if no setback from here on out.

Even with a clean MRI, just shut Rosario down for 10-14 days please.

Probably not as SS but he should be in the mix for his roster spot. If they'd rather carry Cecchini than Guillorme, Cabrera or Reyes slides to SS and Cecchini becomes an option at 2b. Guillorme's glove should no doubt have him in the mix since that's probably ready to help at either spot but realistically he hasn't even played in AAA yet.

once again I blame Shecky for proclaiming Rosario injury free (or giving him a "clean bill of health"). Please Shecky I beg you, be more negative with your injury posts and be pleasantly surprised, you're going to ruin the season. We're lucky this is only a minor groin injury. next time we won't be so lucky.

Quote:
Amed Rosario (left kne/leg):

Rosario, who is dealing with a groin issue, said Wednesday that he expects to return to the lineup later this week.

The 22-year-old Rosario, who hasn't played since this past Saturday due to what was initially irritation in his left knee, said the knee feels better but that compensating for it might have led to the minor groin issue.

Anthony Swarzak (strained left calf):

Swarzak began a throwing progression last Friday, threw a modified bullpen session on Monday morning, and is continuing his throwing progression.

He left last Tuesday's game against the Astros in the top of the third inning due to the injury, which he suffered while running to cover first base.

Dominic Smith (strained right quad):

Smith continued to hit on Tuesday, facing Jacob deGrom during his simulated game. He has been hitting and doing drills since last week.

Michael Conforto (recovery from shoulder surgery):

Conforto took batting practice Tuesday for the first time since his surgery. He has been working his way back, with an expected return date of roughly May 1.

"There's the May 1st date, and that kind of gives me an idea," he said last month. "As a competitor, it's tough for me not to look at that date and want to get out there before that."

.
arcarsenal : 3/7/2018 9:14 pm : link
He just looks like a guy who doesn't trust his stuff at all.

He pitches like he's afraid to throw the ball anywhere in the meat of the zone because it'll just get laced. So he tries to hit the corners and nibbles (and often misses), falls behind hitters routinely and then gets himself into counts where he HAS to throw a strike and guys are just teeing off.

I thought Montero had the highest floor of some of these pitchers a few years ago. He seemed like a guy who would be a mid-rotation fixture for a long time because he seemed to have such good control when he was first making his way through the system.

That control seems to be gone and none of his stuff seems to be fooling or overpowering anyone.

Just not a very good pitcher right now and he's out of options so I'm not really sure what the plan is for him - but right now, it looks like if he's going to keep his roster spot, he's going to be limited to mop-up duty out of the pen.

Can't pitch that guy in any high-leverage situation and he has done nothing to warrant a spot in the rotation, either.

he'll probably get at least a month to prove he's not cooked. Defensively he's looked pretty good in the little bit I've seen, ST hitting is mostly meaningless.

Plan B is Smith, who has had issues all camp. First the lateness then the injury. Don't think he's had a chance to show much.

Once the season starts if neither of those 2 can hack it, Flores is probably next in line at least for a time.

If none of the above are performing by the time Conforto comes back, then I suppose Bruce becomes an option. Especially if Nimmor or Lagares is playing well. Bruce could even be an option before then if both Nimmo/Lagares are playing well.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets shortstop Amed Rosario clarified the confusion surrounding his leg injury on Wednesday, saying his eagerness to recover from left knee tightness may have caused the soreness he currently feels in his groin.

"Fortunately, I feel better about my knee," Rosario said though an interpreter. "Maybe I was trying to take care of my knee so much that I felt something sore in my groin area."

View Full Game Coverage
Initially when Rosario departed Saturday's game, the Mets called his issue knee weakness. The groin issue did not arise until about two days later, Rosario said, preventing him from holding to his original plan of returning to the lineup Tuesday. The shortstop continues to call himself "day to day," noting that "in a couple of days I will be back for sure."

Idk. I actually looked up any ST statistics on its impact of season record last year. There is a study article out there that actually did all the math on it. I think there was a high correlation to being a bad team related to spring training losses or a playoff team related to spring training wins. But it was one way and not necessarily the other too, but it still isnt a good omen. Especially after last spring training where they looked terrible and then were terrible. This year I feel they are playing more younger guys and just going for looks.

But I cant remeenr the last spring training the Mets were actually good to be honest.

2015, ironically. 2008 they had a good spring training record as well. Every other year down to 2006 they were mostly a .500 team or less. Sounds about right if you correlate to regular season production.
I dont think anyone ever really cares about W/Lin March
Shecky : 3/8/2018 9:59 pm : link
I mean, everyone would rather they win. But no one really cares at the end of the day. Ask 100 execs, and all 100 would prefer a well played game that they worked on developing and lost, rather than a win that no one grew from.

Thor is so beyond special, its ridiculous. Someone mentioned none of his games have been televised, which is an absolute shame. Even some highlights would be nice for Mets fans to see. His growth this spring has been absurd.

Other than him and Nimmo, it isnt exactly an exciting spring. Not Uber prospects to watch. The three young guys to watch havent played much (Conforto, Dom and Rosario). The lack of rules, refreshing yet concerns me. Thats the negatives - which lets be honest, wed all sign up for that negative news. Its a real boring team with some incredible SP talent to drool over. I like pitching, speed and defense. One out of three aint bad.

The positives. A very professional, workmanlike spring. A ton of learning and growing. Kids are getting a chance to play. A lot of optimism from day one. The team is really enjoying the below the radar afterthought, that they know can cause some damage if everything falls the right way.

Still would have been too rich for the Mets. Lol, gotta laugh.

That Moustakas deal is insane
bhill410 : 3/9/2018 8:57 am : link
I only hope it shows some players that borass approach is not always the best for a player. At a min the guy cost himself 10 million by rejecting the qualifying offer, but I would also bet the guy had multiple offers in the 50 million range that were rejected.
Boras approach
pjcas18 : 3/9/2018 9:12 am : link
has backfired before too, to an extent

Guys like Stephen Drew and Jason Varitek.

Mets could have used Moustakas, but he's not their biggest need right now and would have cost their 2nd round pick.
If, big if
Shecky : 3/9/2018 9:53 am : link
But if he would have been willing to sign a similar deal here (99.9% he wouldnt)
Who cares that the team would have given up a post second round pick. Moose is by far the most underpaid player in baseball (non rookie deal of course) and its just a 1/2 year deal. Short and cheap. Thats insane. Who here wouldnt trade noodle armed Frazier for him 100/100 times?

Obviously pre-Frazier it made a lot more sense, but you need to have a better backup plan to not sign Frazier and wait out Moose.

Can't fault Sandy on this one. At least I can't, some people will.

Not faulting at all
Shecky : 3/9/2018 10:00 am : link
Frazier made sense, no one can complain about signing him. Cabreras option made sense to pick up, cant blame anyone.

It talk about an offseason of reading the market and playing it well. Royals arent done yet, but for a whopping $13mm theyve signed John Jay, Lucas Duda and Moose. Short term and cheap. No stars, but three serviceable major league players for short term, dirt cheap deals. For literally one of the three years of Bruces deal. For a little bit more money than Ramos will cost that is a MAGNIFICENT offseason.
Well I'd stil rather
pjcas18 : 3/9/2018 10:09 am : link
have Merandy Gonzalez and the other throw in (Cespedes?) than Ramos.

That one I do fault Sandy for, as sellers the Mets should not have "bought" Ramos for anything close to as valuable as Merandy. Even if Merandy becomes a total bust.
Bullpens are overpriced now
Shecky : 3/9/2018 10:17 am : link
So. Erandy for a RP with closing experience and one more year of control - thats a very very fair price. The debate of whether Ramos is a good bullpen arm or not, or worth his salary - different argument.

Put it this way. Both free agents. And Swarz, a crappy career bullpen arm with a few good months signs for si liar money as Moose did. And everyday, quality player at a tough position. Crazy, yes. But thats what the market is overpaying for right now.
But you're three weeks into spring training
pjcas18 : 3/9/2018 10:25 am : link
it takes balls of steel to wait this long for players to settle if you don't have a plan B and the Mets clearly didn't have a plan B to Frazier.

and some players simply don't settle (see Stephen Drew), when did he sign?

Mid-May?

I wasn't bothered that the Mets traded Merandy Gonzalez (their likely top 5 prospect this year) for a reliever who had closing experience and the extra year normally would be a plus, I was bothered it was for Ramos who has been a shitty pitcher (mostly) for almost 2 years. He had 1 good year.

Awesome news for those wanting to see Thor
Shecky : 3/9/2018 10:26 am : link
Somehow DiComo got video of Thor from yesterday. Dont know how, but you can see his Ks at least. He was terrible warming up. Terrible. Wild high. Couldnt get comfortable.
Came out and had zero command early. Went to his secondaries and surprised himself. He is so much filthier than even he realizes. Theme this year you will see with all pitchers will be a huge adjustment. Use your legs, pitch in, and the key - learn to pitch not throw. Areas will be a massive signing teaching these kids how successful you can be without your best stuff.
So, any Mets fans want a scare?

What's the plan on 1B? If AGonz is shot, is the plan just to give Smith 500 ABs and hope for the best? Has anyone seen or heard anything about Bruce taking a lot of reps at first this spring?

Both catchers are showing some pop this spring. Given how bad hitting is for catchers across MLB lately, I think our tandem is fine.

99% sure he made the trip today. Wasnt supposed to start, he is supposed to hit when the replacements take over.

AGone will almost certainly get a min of 4-6 weeks to make it work. Minimum.

Never had any doubt with Plaw :). Never spoke with Lucroy all winter, and theyve always loved him. Says enough about what they felt they had.

Matz looks no better than he did in first two starts. Difference is, the results. Faced the minimum so far. But has probably given up more hard hit balls today than either of his other two starts. Thats baseball.

I've irrationally loved Flores his whole career. Would love to get him every day starts. He's the type of low cost high upside guys that we should be giving every chance possible. He's still 26, so he's entering his prime.

The Mets signed Flores in 2007. 11 years ago, LOL.

What an IFA class that was too, Flores and Puello were the headliners, but it included Mejia, Familia, Valdespinn, and Marte.

A couple flamed out, but solid IFA class with just Flores and Familia.

it has to be tough to project 16 year old kids, but that scout(s) really did well IMO.

I agree - it's crazy to me that Flores is only 26 and so rarely mentioned in the mix as a starter considering how stingy this team can be. I doubt Cabrera has much trade value, but at some point I could see them swapping him for a similarly overpriced reliever or OF'er if a need arises.

Close to 0% chance. 46 k's over 191 ab's in GCL/Kingsport doesn't = essentially skipping 3 levels. Rosario was 19 in St. Lucie. He and Wilmer are the only teens to play in St. Lucie over the past 7 seasons and Vientos just turned 18 in December.

no issues with them not bringing him back.

Not getting Kipinis, over-committing to Bruce/blocking Conforto in RF, and not bringing back Reed are the 3 main issues I have with this offseason.

The silver lining to the Bruce deal is he may end up being the starting 1B. The silver lining to not getting Kipinis may end up being that one of the young guys steps up. Hard to find a silver lining to not bringing back Reed though. The opportunity to trade for someone better at the deadline if they are in position to make a run?

And he's also got two of 3 runners on base against him... I feel like I never see this guy throw a quick, clean inning.

Everyone stealing on him.

Huge focus on runners all spring. Holding. Changing timing to plate. One guys is just not getting it. At all

Outside of Thor and DeGrom, the Mets dont really have much
PhiPsi125 : 3/13/2018 9:24 pm : link
to be inspired about. Harvey, Wheeler, Montero have all had a poor spring training thus far. Lugo has done alright and Gsellman has been meh. And then theres...Vargas. Hard to figure how the rotation is going to fare this season.

I have no idea what to think about the bullpen, aside from the fact that most of them stink. Blevins and Sewald cant pitch every night.

The offense is also hard to figure out. I feel like the offense should be good but I just cant get there. I almost expect another season of a lot of HRs, a lot of strikeouts, low batting average and streaky as hell.

Its a weird team.
And Scherzer is still filthy as hell.

The back of the BP is worrying but they should have some time to sort things out. If the SP stays healthy I think they are good enough to get to post-season.

The everyday defense should be a little better this year and the lineup should be very slightly lower K (mostly thanks to dumping Duda). Really though, the main improvement in that area is going to have to come from the young guys. Nimmo (28%), Rosario (29%), Conforto (26%), and Dom Smith (27%) had the highest K-rates on the team.

Cespedes getting a cortisone
Metnut : 3/14/2018 9:44 am : link
shot in his wrist. Can't you only get a limited number of those during a season? It's only March 14 and he's already going to that well.

Ehalt says Callaway knew that Cespedes wrist was sore but played him anyway on Sunday. WTF is wrong with this team? Why would you play Cespedes if his wrist hurt in a fucking spring training game? Even a regular season game you'd have to sit him.

I don't get it. A healthy Cespedes is worth an extra 3-5 wins compared to next man up. How can they be so reckless?

Shecky is right about the media

they know the fans eat this up. but either your transparent or not, you can't call yourself transparent and then lie.

For all their commitment to transparency/prudence regarding injuries, the Mets:

-Had Cespedes play through a wrist sore enough to need cortisone
-Cut off a media interview with him about it after 90 seconds
-Did not inform Mickey Callaway that he had an x-ray until hours later
From the Mayo clinic (on cortisone shots)
Metnut : 3/14/2018 10:24 am : link
"The injections usually comprise a corticosteroid medication and a local anesthetic. Often, you can receive a cortisone shot at your doctor's office. Because of potential side effects, the number of shots you can receive in one year generally is limited."

"There's concern that repeated cortisone shots might cause the cartilage within a joint to deteriorate. So doctors typically limit the number of cortisone shots into a joint.

In general, you shouldn't get cortisone injections more often than every six weeks and usually not more than three or four times a year."

Cespedes has quickly become a guy that I'm not sure we can rely on. He can't go 15 games without getting banged up.

I love the player but it seems like he's so seldom 100% and the healthy stretches are getting fewer and farther between now.

I know.

It's frustrating because he has MVP level upside. He's become a better hitter as he's gotten older but he just can't stay healthy.

This wrist injury likely isn't the end of the world, but I'm getting worked up over it because they played him in a spring training game after knowing about it.

Agreed, but most of his issues last year were leg-related. I remember watching his workout videos on FB last offseason and wondering what the hell he was doing. OF's don't need to squat 600 lbs. Hopefully he has learned form that.

arcarsenal : 3/14/2018 11:22 am : link
Yeah, he was training like a bodybuilder instead of a baseball player last year - made no sense.

Just seems like something always creeps up.

He fucked up his shoulder at the end of the NLCS vs. CHC too - and he was clearly injured during the WS (couldn't hit a lick) which cost us big time.

So, we've now had quad issues, hamstring issues, shoulder issues, AND wrist issues.

That's a lot.
Mets have a pretty brutal
pjcas18 : 3/14/2018 11:42 am : link
lineup without Cespedes.

Though I'd love to see Nimmo break out at the MLB level, not with the power of Cespedes, but at least as a high OBP guy who can lead off with some pop and play plus D in CF.

That way even though the lineup is weaker, the team has legit major league options and not just a platoon guy like Lagares.

Conforto, Nimmo and Bruce wouldn't be an awful OF if Nimmo holds his own or more an Conforto comes back as pre-injury Conforto.
Just in case anyone missed it

I think I mentioned the other day they were holding off on cuts until after the SS yesterday. They are now official:

Bad first inning for Matz
Metnut : 3/14/2018 1:40 pm : link
today against the Marlins. He's looked unimpressive all spring IMO.

Right now, I think the best rotation would be Thor, DeGrom, Harvey, Vargas, Lugo. There's not a lot of depth behind that as I havn't seen much out of Wheeler, Montero, Gsellmen or Matz to inspire confidence. Wheeler's stuff looks nasty at least, so I think he'd by the 6th man, or maybe you let him start the year and use Lugo as the long man.

arcarsenal : 3/14/2018 1:44 pm : link

Theres no way Id let Wheeler pitch over Lugo.

Ugh. He is falling apart as we speak. There are minor injuries and then there are met minor injuries (meaning cortisone shots or platelet rich injections that tske weeks and months to minorly heal.

I thought they fixed these issues w their firing of met medical and hiring of jack LaLanne?
