Eli + Rookie QB & the Salary Cap?

Sean : 3/6/2018 9:32 pm
I’m no cap expert, but I know Eli represents a large percentage towards the salary cap. One of the great benefits of having a QB on a rookie contract, is the ability to load up with the remainder of the roster. If the Giants draft Darnold/Rosen/Allen, are we wasting QB development & potential salary cap savings by keeping Eli? My question is this:

1. How much money in cap savings would cutting Eli loose save, and how many players could that potentially yield in free agency?

Eli is my favorite athlete of all time, it goes without saying. But, for the overall health of this franchise going forward, drafting a QB at 2 & giving him the reins may make the most sense. Paying a QB less money & building the roster could be a big advantage.

The biggest issue with keeping Eli imv, it just delays the inevitable. It is very idealistic to say he is going to mentor the rookie & lead NYG to the playoffs. What happens when the Giants are 4-5 and the fans are clamoring for Darnold/Rosen/Allen? Are we all going to go through last years ordeal again? It just feels like the franchise would be in the same boat again next year. It makes so much sense to link Shurmur with any of these QB’s to set up the future.

sure they have Eli know ... If he starts shitting the bed again Webb or the Rookie if drafted at 2 is getting some PT. He need to make it happen plain and simple, play like a 15 yr vet that is a 2 time SB MVP.
Cutting Eli in 2018

saves about $10M in cap $ but incurs like $12M in dead cap.
Cutting him in 2019 saves $17M and dead cap of about $6M.

Which is exactly why the Giants will draft a QB IMO. They can't pay a 38-39 year old 23.2 million. I don't think Eli will be on the team in 2019.
If you cut Eli before Mar 18,

and designate him a post June 1st cut, you save 10M this season and 10M next season....

If we draft a QB this season and keep Eli, think this team is going to the playoffs this season? Not with your #1 pick not contributing while sitting on the bench and with only 30m in cap space, that is not going a long way to buy an OL, or fill the other holes on the team....

So if we are not a contender with Eli and a new QB, why is Eli here? If you draft a QB at #2, you start your rebuild without Eli.....22M to just be a mentor is ridiculous...
