NGT: Redskins / Cousins

Jerz44 : 3/7/2018 6:00 am
What the heck is wrong with the Redskins?

Cousins is a legit starting QB in this league, which is basically priority #1 for every team. And they're letting him go!

I just don't get it. Why didn't they lock him up to a long term deal instead of letting him walk?

And give me Cousins over Alex Smith any day of the week.
Cousins should run the country

Especially if that 90 million over 3, all guaranteed, by the Vikings is true. Nobody has milked the system better. I don’t think he’s great. But I agree with you that he’s better than Smith, who represents everything that’s wrong with contemporary passing stats. Smith is more mobile. And that’s all he is. His passes traveled the shortage distance of any quarterback in the league last season . He makes Eli look like Daryl Lamonica, by comparison.

Smith is older. He’s a downgrade. And the Redskins have nothing in the hole. McCoy is a career back-up. They’ve screwed this up royally.
Maybe because they haven’t gotten anywhere
Tuckrule : 3/7/2018 6:52 am : link
With him and he’s shown his abilities come playoff time. 90 million guaranteed first 3 years like the vikes supposedly offered is insane. Smith is cheaper and pretty equal player. Smart move by the skins imo
If they wanted him long term
AnnapolisMike : 3/7/2018 7:02 am : link
They would have signed him.
Did you watch the Giants at skins 2 years ago
ZogZerg : 3/7/2018 7:05 am : link
Giants rested ODell and a number of other players and Cousins put on a shit show. A win and they were in.

Oh, and then theres this years game where the Giants had guys I never heard of starting and Cousins couldn't get it done.

He is hot and cold and tends to come up small when it matters. I don't blame the skins for not wanting to pay 30 million for that.

Cousins is better than any QB minny had last year so it would be an upgrade for them, but it will be interesting to see if he can win when it matters.

Retro - you keep trying to claim that Smith's passes traveled the shortest distance of any QB in the league last season, but it's simply not accurate. He was in the top half of the league in air yards, and ahead of our own Eli Manning, among notable others.

And, I should add, another QB who had a lower completed air yards average was none other than Kirk Cousins. These stats exist. You can check them rather than falling back on a player's reputation.
Cousins took all the risk
Tom in DC : 3/7/2018 7:55 am : link
by playing two years on the franchise tag. It he got injured, he never would get the big signing bonus associated with a long term deal. He is lucky that he played 2 years at a high salary and played well enough to still sign a long term deal with some one now. The Redskins, being risk adverse, ended up shelling out not much less money over those two years than they would have if they had just signed a long term deal when this started.

The funniest part is that years ago negotiations originally started at 17 million a year, which the skins thought was too rich

That’d be a bargain today. I mean look what glennon got
Because people somehow think
UConn4523 : 3/7/2018 8:35 am : link
that an average starter should be the highest paid player in the league? Cousins is 30, his ceiling is likely already been tapped, and he’s come up small a lot. I would have loved the Redakins to give him a mega deal, but they actually dodge a bullet here. The only thing they did wrong was get nothing for him.
Redskins should be an interesting study...
Dan in the Springs : 3/7/2018 8:36 am : link
Alex Smith has shown that in the right system, he can be successful as a QB, in spite of his early history in the league where he was pretty much seen as a bust.

Last year he was the league leader in passer rating. The false narrative about him being unable to pass the ball downfield has already been busted here. His LCAY (longest completed air yards) downfield was 52.4, which is very close to Cousin's longest (54.4) and significantly longer than Eli's (46.2). He's got enough arm to air it out when it's smart to do so.

Will Washington be able to run an offense with Smith as successful as the one KC ran? Time will only tell, but they seem confident given the investment. I'm fascinated by the whole thing.

Are air yards (completed passes) and total passes downfield the same thing? Not sure which is accurate but I think you guys might be talking about 2 different things.
I also don’t think 1 or 2 good seasons in KC
UConn4523 : 3/7/2018 8:39 am : link
erases what Alex Smith is. A significant amount of his passes down field have been into busted coverage with Hill and Kelce. I’d say he’s more than likely to revert back to old Alex Smith unless the Skins try to duplicate the KC offense (good luck).

I’d rather have Cousins, but hard to really gauge given how much they paid for Smith both in salary and picks.

Are air yards (completed passes) and total passes downfield the same thing? Not sure which is accurate but I think you guys might be talking about 2 different things.

Air yards are the total yards (or average yards) that a QB's completed passes actually travel in the air, in terms of forward yardage. So it basically removes all YAC from a QB's passing yardage.

The idea that Smith had the fewest yards in the air (or that his passes traveled the shortest distance, which is just another way of saying the same thing) is fictitious. There's also "intended air yards" which I believe includes air yards on incomplete passes, but I'm not sure why anyone would credit a QB for incomplete passes anyway - what's the benefit of incomplete deep passes other than to skew the air yards differential?
It’s a simple answer...

GMs

Let's see. How can we screw up our salary cap. Hey! I know! Let's pay this guy $30 million a year! That'll do it!
Cousins $90,000,000
Giantslifer : 3/7/2018 2:21 pm : link
A fool and his money!

Cousins is an average QB. He may get Vikings to Conference Championship.
OH Yeah - they did that with Concussion boy.

The only thing the DC team has done right is to NOT pay Cousins any more money.
I was hoping they would Franchise him again , try to trade him and be stuck with Cousins and his $35,000,000 salary.
When will these GM's learn?
It's hard to believe
mrvax : 3/7/2018 3:36 pm : link
the Vikings will be paying Cousins $90M for 3 years. Absurd.
