Combine and QB's not getting it

mitch300 : 3/7/2018 11:40 am
Since we have had Eli,I have not paid much attention to the QB section of the combine. I was surprised that they are having the QB's throw without any pressure. I am not suggesting they get touch them. However, how about getting in their face. I mean big deal that they are accurate throwing a pass without any pressure. Am I wrong?
This is how it has always been at the combine

It might be

however, I don't see how it can make a difference on rating a QB that is throwing the ball in the least game conditions as possible.
No Mitch, you are not wrong.

Also why are drills done in underwear. Why don't players
wear a uniform while 'performing' or drilling.

Good point

didn't even think about that. Teams are so in tune to the times the players run, yet what are their true times in uniform.
Thats why the combine drills are basically useless.

I would think they key is the interviews and measurements.
The combine has never tried to emulate

game conditions for any of the positional drills. Why would they do that differently for QBs? So you could risk injuring one of these guys accidentally and costing them millions of dollars?
still useful

to get an up-close and clean look at mechanics, velocity, loft, spin, etc.
You can only look at so much in the short amount
ZogZerg : 3/7/2018 12:14 pm : link
they are more interested to see whether they can throw an out rout our a deep ball with anticipation.

You can check the college tape for how they handle pressure.

The QB drills have little use in determining the QB's value

I think that it is just a way for teams to have an up close look at the QB's mechanics and arm strength and how/if they have changed since the end of the season.

It is too risky to have players get in these QB's faces to simulate pressure. What if a player trips and blows out a QB's knee? That could cost the QB millions and there would certainly be lawsuits. If they want to see how a QB handles pressure they have plenty of college tapes to refer to.

I heard something on the radio the other day about how, back in the day before the NFL was as big business as it is today, the NFL didn't want to supply the players with all the equipment needed to dress everyone in full pads. The players didn't own their equipment from college, so they performed in shorts. They don't do it now because they want the historical comparison, even if it makes more sense to be in pads and the NFL can afford it. I found it plausible.

Scouts just want to see the way the ball comes out, the footwork, and the overall mechanics. Full uniforms really aren't necessary to achieve that. There's plenty of tape on these guys wearing uniforms, throwing under pressure, etc.

I think that is largely right. I have heard a lot of coaches/scouts/GMs/Etc get very perturbed when the QBs half-ass the drill to avoid having a bad miss. They'd rather you "grip it and rip it" versus trying to be too careful and precise.

I don't like Mayfield, but he embraced that approach.
Jeez! Do you want them to play an exhibition game?

That’s what the Senior Bowl is for.
Game Tape

mitch. You may have some points, but the combine is a stripped down nuts and bolts evaluation where the interviews and medicals are the most important aspect.
All good points

I just feel there is too much hoopla over the combine. Some made a big deal because Darnold didn't want to throw at combine.
I'm sure there's some benefit to seeing...
GFAN52 : 3/7/2018 1:48 pm : link
how well they perform under the pressure of all these scouts and NLF personnel watching them throwing to unfamiliar WRs.
They don’t want injuries either.
Giant John : 3/7/2018 2:05 pm : link
Which is the right approach.
Good stuff mitch

Was thinking, why don't they have cheerleaders there, too? That way its even more similar to a game experience.
