InsideThePylon: Pat Shurmur and the Giants

OdellBeckhamJr : 3/7/2018 1:41 pm
In depth analysis of what Shurmur's offense means for the Giants...

Quote:
This look will be a deep dive into what elements Shurmur will probably bring to the 2018 Giants, and what did not work for quarterback Eli Manning in the previous system. Coaches and their systems evolve and we simply do not know what the future holds, hence the emphasis on probably in the previous sentence. With the second pick overall in the draft coming up in late April, we have little clue yet who the Giants will take, and quite frankly the analysis can still be made without that knowledge. By the conclusion, the reader will see that although a quarterback may be taken with that pick, it is still the judgement that 2018 will be Eli Manningísí year in a very positive way.

Some interesting film study there

Although to be fair, the writer takes McAdoo to task for games (2nd Cowboys game, Cardinals game) that took place after he was fired. Then again, it was his offensive scheme, so...
Great find. Thanks !!!

Does not show Manning in a good light

He says he is not trying to criticise Manning but he certainly does show a lot of mistakes

His bad play is real. Thatís why we canít keep making excuses for him. Heís not a young QB
Very interesting.

Some take-away points:

-McAdoo's offense required too much precise execution to be successful, including precise QB footwork.

-Shurmur and Shula have done a great job in the past of putting guys in position to make "easy" plays. They also tailor the offense to their personnel.

-Shurmur uses a lot of play-action, which is great to hear since it used to be something Eli was really good at.

-Eli suffered from bad protection but also made mistakes with clean pockets.
And the injuries
VinegarPeppers : 3/7/2018 5:20 pm : link
led to the WR corps often made up of practice squad signings and street guys and zero timing route work with them to speak of.

Footwork is not something that should be an issue with Manning. That seems like a weird thing to blame the scheme on.
Give Eli some protection and a run game

Then let's see how much decline there is.

That move to the outside that King put on Darby in the last film clip is freaking nasty.

This. The writer kills Eli for not getting off his first read. But Eli was waiting for the first guy to make his cut. Eli had no confidence that the receivers were going to run the right routes.
the problem is that Eli is a peacock
mdc1 : 3/8/2018 2:47 pm : link
in a new system that moves into the future. His personality is not peacock level, but his contract is and his performance is. Moving on to the new guy quickly is very important or we will be living at the bottom of the NFC east, then stay there a bit longer as we adjust in a reactionary manner with a new guy. Just because we changed the coach does not mean shit. Enough of the let Eli turn it around, we have failed fast. Time to move on to the next generation.
Good Read

Thanks for sharing!

Over his career Eli has done well off of play action.. That part of Shurmur's scheme should help Eli.
