Giants tender Jones

Expected to move on from Richburg
Jones/richburg - ( New Window )
He’s not very good either

Like most, if not all of the OL, the long term solution at OC is not on this roster.
Two OL positions set

Agree. He can still improve.
Poor thread title

They haven't tendered Jones. They will, but until then, this is just educated speculation on what we all knew they were going to do anyway.
Jones is pretty much a jag

doesn't get a lot of push but rarely gets pushed back. You can live with that.

Even if he is JAG, what would significant upgrades in guards on either side of him do for his overall performance?
It may be too much to expect to have 5 OL who are well above average.
I like it.

You could do worse. Can still draft a guy to compete.
We aren’t going to change the entire offensive line

In one year. He certainly showed he can hold the position down at least for this next season.

Thanks. Can you offer up tomorrow lotto numbers too? You know everything else why not share the wealth.

I'm sure the day the Giants signed jones as a vet fa from the Canadian league that you were absolutely certain he would not only make the team but play and actually hold his own in real games. You knew that. Now you know he's got no future here.

This place sucks sometimes.

Yep. They will upgrade what they can and where they can but in the short term this staff is going to have to do what the last one failed, which is generate competition and coach guys up.

Solid is a stretch. The bar has been set pretty low around here.

He gets pushed back in pass protection. But usually stays between his man and QB. Very solid reserve IMO.

to find 5 new pro bowlers in one offseason. Jones is a cheaper option than Richburg will be and could actually prove better anyway. If we do find a better center in time, he's not locked into an expensive deal.
I'm okay with metrics in football

I don't know about this.

It seemed to me that when Jones was playing center and Fluker was in at right guard the line got some push and the running game improved, even though the Giants were fielding third and fourth string wide receivers.

I like Jones. Yeah, he is an overachiever but he works his ass off and gets the job done. I would be comfortable fielding Jones for the next four or five years.
Jones
Dragon : 3/7/2018 8:04 pm : link
Is a stopgap for one year at less than 3 mil but that just goes to show how little talent they have on the OL. This is a very good draft for centers with one that unfortunately or fortunately got hurt which could cause him to fall unexpectedly. My real fear with the OL is that once again they may put patches on it but injuries destroy it due to the fact no real depth is obtained. However that’s a team wide problem that can’t be fixed in one day.
I was so excited for Richburg

Jones is a scrapper
Matt in SGS : 3/7/2018 8:36 pm : link
and he'll be decent for the Giants, I don't expect the second coming of Bart Oates. But the reality is that the Giants can't plug every hole on the offensive line this offseason. So as you prioritize you realize you can live with Jones at center for a year.
Let's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/7/2018 8:38 pm : link
not get be too optimistic here. Jones had some rough games at center.
BTW

$2.91 million (2nd-round) tender?

That's quite a bit of $$$. Hope he elevates his game.
Guys
Rjanyg : 3/7/2018 8:49 pm : link
All this is is the front office saying: we need to solidify our Center position.

Let's tender Jones and pencil him in as the starter, and we will draft a center in round 4 or 5.

Mason Cole in round 5 sounds good to me.
Brett Jones is not a JAG
est1986 : 3/7/2018 9:07 pm : link
Brett Jones >>> Weston Richburg. Starting Center for under $3million. Good.

I think it would be a real mistake to get comfortable based on what Jones did last season. Just because it was better than the garbage football that's come from the interior of the line the past few years shouldn't mean handing out starting jobs and penciling names into the starting lineup going forward. You want to field the best unit possible, not just settle for the first maybe league-average thing that appears to be competent.

We have a lot of other positions to upgrade. If a better center comes along, great, but we can live with Jones at center in 2018.

I just read another thread bashing PFF. So, they rate a Giants player poorly, they suck. If they rate them positively, they are good. Got it. We’re dealing with real brain surgeons on this board.
2014 - the best draft for tackles and guards in a decade
sb from NYT Forum : 3/7/2018 10:30 pm : link
...and we draft a center. And no other OL at all. Freakin genius.
What do you expect?
Doomster : 3/8/2018 5:15 am : link
Think we can just go out and replace the whole OL?

Was Jones the weakest link in the OL last year?

No!

So you start with the weakest links.....

The rebuild for the OL has been going on for 7 seasons, and we do not even have one building block...

Our first move was a LBer.....was it a need? Absolutely!

But that move just cost us 10M in cap.....

So how many more big moves can we make? Are we playing for now? If yes, then expect several contracts to be restructured to increase cap for signings....but that is a double edged sword.....instant success or the hole gets deeper.....Gettleman has his work cut out for him....
You could do worse than Jones.
Brown Recluse : 3/8/2018 7:11 am : link
But you could do a lot better.

He's serviceable and affordable until something better comes along (maybe in the draft)

Except when we play the Eagles.
The only connection that favors a Norwell signing is DG.
Ivan15 : 3/8/2018 7:41 am : link
I don’t think that’s enough.
Jones is quality
HoustonGiant : 3/8/2018 10:19 am : link
and he'll get better. Especially when there is talent around him.
I like Jones
Jay on the Island : 3/8/2018 7:58 pm : link
but I hope the Giants add John Sullivan to hold down the fort for a year. Jones is better as a backup G/C. This would give Jones another year to improve and prove he is the future center. If he fails the Giants bought themselves a year to find their next center because they won't be able to fix the offensive line in one offseason.
I'm loving the 'decision tree' emerging for Gettelman so far
Torrag : 3/9/2018 12:37 pm : link
Jones played very well and improved weekly with virtually no support around him last season. This tender is a very wise move.

Coupled with the Ogletree trade it shows marked improvement in two areas.

1) Scouting of offensive line ability. Something the last regime proved terrible at.

2)Valuation of speed and explosion at the LB position and it's importance to a defenses success in today's game.
