Who can the Giants restructure?

Andy in Boston : 3/7/2018 6:33 pm
Besides DRC and cutting Jerry, Harris as possible Marshall
Is there anyone else they can restructure?
Vernon, Jenkins
Breeze_94 : 3/7/2018 6:42 pm : link
seem like the most likely, although re-structuring does not make the money dissapear, it just puts it off another year. Not sure that is in the Giants best interest considering they have to re-sign Odell and Collins before next season.
How do you restructure a 1 year deal?
robbieballs2003 : 3/7/2018 6:45 pm : link
I think you mean extend DRC.

Olgetree is the number one restructure right now.
There are many ways to do this
Chip : 3/7/2018 6:45 pm : link
You can extend Eli a year and bonus out money now
Jenkins, Harrison and Vernon who have years left on their contracts can be bonus and create cap space.
If you don't cut Marshall you can put him on a performance contract and cut his salary or cut him out right.
Cutting Harris and Jerry creates very little money and players would have to replace them who will be paid. Jerry has been able to stay on the field. I know he is not popular here and I believe he will be here next season.
bonus out money and extension will cost Mara and tisch but could create guessing here 20 million in cap space. It will cost the cap in the future and we do have Collins and Odell contracts to deal with. Hopefully they can find a happy medium. Getting Ogletree says win now
Maybe a technicality
pjcas18 : 3/7/2018 6:47 pm : link
or maybe unclear from your OP but you cannot restructure a player in the final year of their contract (Marshall, DRC, etc cannot be restructured).

they can be cut or take a pay cut on their non-guaranteed $$$, but you can only restructure a player with multiple years on their contract.

Olivier Vernon has an easy out in his contract next year. No reason to
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/7/2018 6:48 pm : link
Move money around and make his contract longer.

YES my mistake - I meant cut DRC.
And I'm not a fan of restructuring- I'm just asking in
case we need to.

Agree on Olgetree restructure. They can convert the roster bonus for 2018 and 2019 into a signing bonus which will be spread over the final 3 years of his contract. Not a massive savings, but the player still gets his money and the Giants get some cap relief.
They have to make it through 2018
mrvax : 3/7/2018 7:00 pm : link
with some fancy accounting.

2019 will have much more $ available. Cutting Eli & JPP in 2019 saves almost $27M.
Eli
Archer : 3/7/2018 7:22 pm : link
The easiest way to create cap space would be to add another year to Eliís contract and convert his salary into a bonus.
Eli
Archer : 3/7/2018 7:30 pm : link
Eli is scheduled to make $12m in salary this year
If he is extended one year and the salary is converted to a bonus it would be prorated over three years
His cap including prior bonus was $22m
His new cap would be &14m saving $8m
I hope they do this with caution
DavidinBMNY : 3/7/2018 9:28 pm : link
And do things like this to lock up players like Collins. They need good young players, they aren't 1 or 2 guys away.

I actually think the Giants are closer than you are giving them credit for. They added Ogletree, potentially Norwell, and a potentially Elite Player at #2 overall as well as 2-3 other starters hopefully in the draft. Get Odell back from injury. Get Eli Apple on track.

Throw in a couple of low cost veterans (Think Dansby, P. Robinson, Hubbard) and my biased eyes see a 10 win team.
But,

aren't you forgetting something? You want to extend him one year? What are you going to pay him for that one extra year?

You save 8M in cap this year, and have to lose 8M in cap down the road.....

His base may be 12M, but that roster bonus is just a fancy way of saying he only makes 12M when he actually is making 17M....

And if he does sign a 3rd year, which he knows he will never get, he may ask for some kind of compensation in guarantee money, for helping the team out.....he's no fool....
All this talk about Norwell,
Doomster : 3/8/2018 6:57 am : link
like it is a given......think his agent doesn't know the Giants need OLmen? The asking price may be too great....

We're past that point. His agent knows the Giants need linemen and his asking price is steep. They are going to try and sign him anyway.

BTW, his agent is Drew Rosenhaus...whom the Giants have a very good relationship with.
I don't see a valid worthwhile restructure option
JonC : 3/8/2018 8:31 am : link
that's really worth it.

Remember, restructure means you're spending and kicking more money down the road. Eli's nearing the end, we want to KEEP the potential outs we own on Vernon and JPP a year from now, and DRC is a last year deal.

There should be cuts coming soon, you'll get your cap savings.

He'll likely ask to be the highest-paid guard, which is fair and still well below their cap availability. It's not as if the agent is going to see a need and suddenly demand a quarterback's salary. These deals often come down to what team is offering the most attractive contract structure, not a bulk dollar value.

Everyone got stunned at Vernon's contract because $85 million dollars. A two-second look at the year to year shows that he played the first year of his deal for peanuts because the contract was structured in a way that was beneficial to the team and also got the player a heap of guaranteed money early in the deal.
