Giants’ position on Rodgers-Cromartie may not change

It is wise to pump the brakes on the anticipation that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is switching positions, from cornerback to free safety. That decision has not been made by the Giants and certainly not been mentioned to Rodgers-Cromartie, someone with knowledge of the situation told The Post.

Reports surfaced last week that Rodgers-Cromartie, the 31-year-old cornerback, was going to return for the fifth and final year of his contract at a new position. That was news to the Giants coaches and front office personnel who would know about such a move, if it was true or had already been decided.

then why did DRC
Andy in Boston : 3/8/2018 10:25 am : link
publicly say something about the change on social media?
Giants would save 6.5 if they cut him
jeff57 : 3/8/2018 10:28 am : link
I think that’s still possible.
why would anything be said at all

either indicates you're targeting a DB in FA/draft. Good news if this correction is true, however.

I think he was responding to questions prompted by the original report.

Kim Jones asked him about it and DRC said "all I need is a chance". Rapoport retweeted that as apparent confirmation but, if DRC is only responding to the idea, it's not, really.
I gotta say that I was surprised by the position switch
Rjanyg : 3/8/2018 10:34 am : link
at this stage of his career. If anything I would have expected a paycut, or extension or an outright release.

We need to Re-sign Ross Cockrell and free up some cap space to fix the O Line. I truly expected DRC to be a cap cut.

A move to safety seemed odd right from the start to me.

Yeah, the Giants need fewer talented DBs.
I would bet...
Damon : 3/8/2018 10:35 am : link
That this was more of a story aimed to make other teams feel the Giants are more invested in Apple.
The move to safety
Gregorio : 3/8/2018 10:41 am : link
was reported 5 days ago by Ian Rapoport of ESPN, who is often quick to break news, but it is usually accurate.

Interesting that it was news to the Giants coaching staff.

either way
Andy in Boston : 3/8/2018 10:43 am : link
hard to believe the Giants would keep him at either position at the salary he's at. He needs to take a pay cut.

Cockrell last year was playing for a contract.
Eli Apple was a big 'no show' last year.
Maybe we can't count on these guys.

I think I'd stay with Rogers-Cromartie and let him finish
out his contract.

DB's need some help.

But for me, QB comes first, OL next, & LB.

I think CAP
jvm52106 : 3/8/2018 10:45 am : link
and age will be a huge deciding factor on this one. Lots of teams are having to pair down to get under cap or create space. Some to just not have to use space on a guy who they like but not at that $ amount.

I would be ok with DRC going only if they truly believe Apple can be better.
Am I the only who thinks DRC at 6.5 mil is a bargain
George from PA : 3/8/2018 10:51 am : link
An experienced DB will get that amount if not more as a FA.
if you look at it from the standpoint of roster construction
Dave on the UWS : 3/8/2018 11:05 am : link
having him at 6.5 mil and playing an unfamiliar position he may not be suited for doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Why do we keep talking about ctting DRC
The 12th Man : 3/8/2018 11:06 am : link
he is still one of our better players on D. He is also at a very reasonable price for quality CB's in this league. Cut the dead wood from this team not players who can actually play please.
My only concern for DRC is,
Doomster : 3/8/2018 11:09 am : link
1. he is another year older...is this the year he loses a step?

2. ability to play 16 full games...he's no bargain if he is not on the field...

The flip side is what can you get for 6.5M these days?
I really like DRC
ATL_Giants : 3/8/2018 11:27 am : link
and I don't want to see him go.

There are enough shit-stained personalities we have to deal with, and I think DRC is a bright spot.
I expect us to draft a corner
est1986 : 3/8/2018 11:29 am : link
Pretty deep cornerback class, could get a good talent in one of the mid rounds
LOL - so you can even trust minor
ZogZerg : 3/8/2018 11:34 am : link
information coming out of Giants central...

Nope. And he was one of the few guys on D that didn't quit last season.
