it's a sport you can play for life. Arnold Palmer won his last tournament in 1973 and he played his last PGA round in 2004. From 1974 to 2004 he was still pretty much the most popular player at any event he attended.
No one has ever played golf at the level Tiger Woods did. At any even he attends he's going to be the main story for the first few days. There is no one in sports that sells more tickets or draws more eye balls to the TV. This tournament had 20K tickets sold when he committed 2 weeks ago. They sold 10K the next day.
still gets fan interest after all the years of not having any success
Yeah, so weird why one of the best all time golfers and most dominant athlete in sports (for a decade+ fairly recently) gets any fan interest while they are still playing. Uncanny.

Look, I don't watch or play golf. But it is odd to me that somebody maintains interest despite a long period of failure. At some point, when do people move on?

Hes the greatest golfer of my generation, and arguably the greatest golfer to ever play the game. Many people were introduced to the game of golf in the 90s because of Tiger. And you are amazed that there is still interest in him? Im amazed people think that.
And he won 5 tournaments in 2013. Yeah, thats eons ago....

Why even post on this thread then? You dont watch or play the game? So you basically admit that you dont know what you are talking about.

That, and saying he's had a "long period of failure" somewhat ignores the fact that he hasn't been healthy and has had four back surgeries in as many years. The guy's not exactly John Daly.

Body breaking down....Maybe because of the roids he took in his prime?
feel he will win again - including Jack Nicklaus (but what would he know?).
If Phil can win a 47 with bad arthritis, Tiger can win as long as that back stays.
BTW, had a friend that played in a Pro-Am with Tiger and he is concerned that the young guys are out driving him - which is a bad thing. If he dwells on distance (despite the fact he is consistently over 310 yards) that will cause him to overswing or try to tweak clubs.

I am not arguing, I am simply wondering why anybody cares about a guy who...results wise, hasn't mattered in years. You answered the question.
has success ever again. By success I mean winning majors. As just for him to be back on the courses playing is success. I just hope he does not win another major ever in his career.
Really enjoying seeing him back. So count me as another guy with a hard-on.
He changes my interest in watching golf markedly. Just like Jeff Gordon did for NASCAR. Didn't watch much non-major Golf with Tiger out, and haven't watched a complete race since Gordon retired.
Continuing to be amused that posters simply can't believe the attempted comeback of one of the legit greatest in the sport is of interest to golf fans. Definitely has me watching more.
...I'll akways hold out hope he'll find his game and grab at least ine more major. If Jack could do it at 46 no reason a similar outcome could be in the offing. Tiger has a lot more potential game left in the tank than Nicklaus had in '86.

That's nice. I hope he wins every major he competes in for the rest of his life.

PGA Tour: Tigers rise to the top of the leaderboard at Valspar resulted in roughly 25% of PGA TOUR LIVE subscribers losing connection for approximately 25 minutes. We apologize for the disruption and are working to eliminate such issues in the future.
He broke the PGA Tour Live stream. Number of interruptions of that stream before today? 0.0.
Paired with Brandt Snedeker. At 4-under and two shots back of the lead, but several players appear to be on their way to good rounds. There's already a 66 and a 65 posted in the clubhouse.

Distance doesn't appear to be a problem for him so far. His drive on #5 went 321 - longest of the day for anyone on that hole.
heard some funny stories from his Stanford days from a former colleague of mine who was at Stanford with Tiger and Greg Comella (ex-Giant from Wellesley MA) - they had a one or two year overlap.
I think calling him El Tigre sounds kind of juvenile, but whatever, arguing Tiger, who revolutionized the game and almost singlehandedly was responsible for the golf boom of the 00's is irrelevant is a silly argument.
Also not a fan of calling anyone a name that isnt theirs
I agree but is El Tigre a thing? I though it was just some random dude on BBI making a thread about Tiger. Much ado about nothing.
The entire media and MLB referring to David Ortiz/Arias as Big Papi is effing stupid. How the media fellates over that moron is one of lifes great mystical.

Years and years ago, "El Tigre" was what Tiger was being called by one of the anchors on Sportscenter during his golf highlights.
But I won't have it said that I'm upsetting people. We will take UConn4523's suggestion and only refer to Eldrick by his given name from now on.
If anyone flouts this rule, I'll report them and see that they're banned.

is about a half-notch lower than it needs to be to win this tournament. Six holes left, but not many birdie opportunities unless he's willing to take risks.

Wrong.
The clubhouse leader is Corey Connors at 4-under.

Just didn't hit it at #7.

Funny, Mets fans root for David Wright and he hasn't played in a decade...
Tiger's distance off the tee doesn't seem to be a problem from what I can tell, but who knows what the guy stresses about when it comes to his game.
FYI, Tiger's playing partners today, Stenson and Spieth, are +2 and +4 respectively, so far.

Stenson's 1st round in quite awhile. Spieth has been playing like crap.
Tiger's ball striking has been very good today, save that 2nd shot on 7...

Guy sucks, irrelevant.
So it's good to see him back. I hope he sustains his health and can stay competitive over a long stretch this time...

Still a sucker's bet, I think.

Yeah its really stupid when I read people saying that. The ratings bump and crowds are all the evidence needed that plenty of people have an interest.
Its must see tv tomorrow.
