If/When Tyrann Matheiu gets released

bigfrank612 : 3/8/2018 8:05 pm
Do we show any interest in him? I’m just connecting the usual dots with Beetcher and Honey badger. Thoughts?

He is open to restructure his contract,
Diver_Down : 3/8/2018 8:08 pm : link
but not a pay cut as the Cardinals asked. I don't see how the Cards don't restructure him. Even if the Honey Badger is released, I don't see how we could afford him.
Restructure not Pay Cut - ( New Window )
Yea

But he said he’s willing to do the restructure, I believe the team wants a pay cut which he said he wouldn’t do.

My bad

Didn’t mean to repeat what you just said haha. Long day.
They will try to trade him before they release him
Milton : 3/8/2018 8:25 pm : link
He is due $42.5M over the next four years. That would be the contract teams would be taking over.
How about if the Giants trade DRC and Flowers...
Milton : 3/8/2018 8:29 pm : link
...in exchange for him? That would mean $11M salary cap dollars added and $8.9M salary cap dollars subtracted for the Giants.

How exactly would that work?

DG calling the Cards GM (Steve Keim): Hello, Steve? Yeah, I heard that Honey Badger is about to be paid and you guys can't afford it.
Steve: We'll manage, Dave. Just part of the dance while we work on restructuring our guy.
Dave: Well, I would be glad to help out. I'm prepared to offer you a defensive standout whose hamstrings are like a dry-rotted rubber-band and a young bag of trash. In return, you let us deal with the financial problem of paying Honey Badger. Deal?
Steve: Bye, Dave.

Just a quick re-write....

Dave: I heard you want him to take a pay cut and you and I both know you don't ask a guy to take a pay cut and then not back it up by releasing him if he doesn't comply. Is he gonna comply?
Steve: (long pause, sniffles can be heard) Give me your 4th round pick and you can have him and what's left on his contract.
Dave: No can do Steverino, but what I can do is give you a pretty damn good CB with experience both outside and in the slot and a young OT that PFF just raves about. Deal?
Steve: Let me consult with my astrologer and I'll get back to you.
Not gonna happen

If it does happen, that means no Norwell. I'll take the OLineman in this scenario.

I always love the trade scenario where the Giants acquire talent from another team for guys most of our fan base wants to cut. That is exactly how it works.
He has not returned to his form

of 2 years ago and has had injury problems. Played all games last year, but averaged 3.5 games missed/year before that. He's a small guy who throws his body around. Great player in 2015

DRC and Flowers may or may not have trade value. It's not like they're gonna be out of football this year. As for Honey Badger, if the Cardinals were to release him anyway, they may be on the look out for what they could get in return from a team willing to take on the four years and $42.5M left of his contract and the $11M cap hit they would incur this year (which can, of course, be restructured, but still).
p.s.--I was half-joking about DRC and Flowers, but you can bet that if the Giants are contemplating releasing either of the two, they will first make phone calls to see if they can get something in return. That's how the Giants wound up with Ogletree and his contract. That's what's going on with a lot of these pre-new year trades.
If cut
jtfuoco : 3/9/2018 11:28 am : link
Too many teams out there with a lot more money available then the giants could offer.
No
