Justin Pugh moves family.

Des51 : 3/9/2018 10:12 pm
I was browsing FA rumors over at Walter Football and under every Florida team on 2/20/18 it stated Justin Pugh has moved and relocated his family to Florida. My guess is he gets back with TC.

You do if you play for a Florida team. But for every game he plays outside of Florida, he has to pay taxes to that state based on 1/16 of his pay. I travel a lot with my job and every year I have to file in every state that I worked in (exceptions being the states with no income tax).

This ^^. I can't image that he hasn't gotten the correct advice on this issue. Unless, of course, like said above, he is retiring.
You don't relocate a week before free agency starts

Because you believe the team there will sign you. Even if you had gotten "informal" assurances that they wanted you, all of your leverage just went out the window by buying a house there.

Probably best to conclude he actually did it because he wants a place to raise his family without having to move them every few years. He will be getting paid enough to keep that home and rent a comfy place in whatever city he chooses to play football.

Sorry
Not saying this is the reason but...

no state income tax in FL. If FL is his primary residence, then he saves 7% on his NFL salary. Not pocket change.

Why do you do that? I've worked on several federal government jobs over the year. The rule we use, is if you work in a state more than 52 weeks, you owe that state taxes from Day 1. Which is why majority of all government employees demode and go back home at 50 weeks.

Just curious what advise you have gotten.
I wish him good luck

Seemed like a guy who was a team player and really cared. When he played he was a good player. But he didn't play enough and he's probably going to be overpaid going forward.
Could be that he expects deferred income in his future

(which he can happen for athletes) OR that after his career he wants to save income tax on dividends and cap gains. Or he just likes Florida.
