Idea: Browns will take Barkley AND Nelson now.....

TheGhostofBlueGuy : 3/9/2018 11:28 pm

that they have Taylor, Landry and Randall n the fold. They are, IMO, not yours dad's Browns anymore. Dorsey (who I wanted here) has put his stamp on this team well before the draft.

AFC North is officially on notice.
Taylor is horseshit, not the answer
The_Boss : 3/9/2018 11:30 pm : link
You can bet your ass they’re taking the qb they want at 1.
They’re not the same old Browns.
They need a young QB and
Rjanyg : 3/9/2018 11:30 pm : link
They just traded Kizer to Green Bay. Barkley and Nelson are the best players in the draft but they would be smart getting Barkley and a QB. Taylor is under contract for 1 year.
Huh?
Marty866b : 3/9/2018 11:31 pm : link
You think the Browns think Taylor is their future at quarterback? They traded their young quarterback tonight which confirms that they are picking a quarterback at #1 which is absolutely the right thing for them to do.
Qb at 1 and Nelson at 4
halfback20 : 3/9/2018 11:36 pm : link
Would be smart.
They might do that
81_Great_Dane : 3/9/2018 11:37 pm : link
but I agree that Taylor is just the "bridge" QB -- he's not the long term answer. They traded a young QB who was thrown to the wolves but still has some promise for a guy who is a competent starter but doesn't have a lot of (obvious) upside. That makes sense if they're going to get another young QB.
Why would anyone have confidence that the Browns have changed?

It doesn't matter who they hire or who the owner is. What's different this year?

Better than avg. QB that has played in cold weather and can make plays.
Good idea

Seriously. What's different? They've hired GMs from winning teams before. They've hired super bowl winning coaches. They've stockpiled draft picks before. They're not doing anything they haven't done before so far.

Haven't seen Barkley/Nelson at 1/4 discussed once here.
As Long As Cleveland Takes A QB At Number 1 Overall
Trainmaster : 3/9/2018 11:45 pm : link
and the Giants take Barkley with the Number 2 overall, I'll be a very, very happy man.

The consolation prize is Cleveland takes Barkley number 1 overall, and the Giants get the proverbial "King's Ransom" in a trade down and end up with Nelson or Chubb.
Underwhelmed with Browns moves today.
Boy Cord : 3/10/2018 12:17 am : link
Stop-gap QB. WR that averages 10 YPC. Up-and-down CB. Just not feeling it.
These are great moves for the Browns
George : 3/10/2018 4:01 am : link
They've addressed two serious needs at WR and CB, have a new QB who can make plays, and added some locker stability in the process.

Best of all, they really didn't give up very much, as the mid- and lower-round picks they traded away for veteran performers were regained when they traded away a QB - in Kizer - that they didn't want to keep anyway. They still have all four of their picks in rounds 1 and 2, plus picks in rounds 4-7. And now they have Jarvis Landry.

In other words, the Browns still control the draft this year, but got demonstrably better about four days before Free Agency even begins. They're probably $90 million under the cap (guessing the salaries they've just purchased will cost $10 million or so this year) so they can still make it rain like Jerry Reese did in 2016.

John Dorsey just gave a master class in roster rebuilding.

Nah, according to the BBI pundits, Dorsey is meh. Laughable. He just gave a clinic and isn't donr.
It's a QB at 1 - probably Darnold then they have...
GFAN52 : 3/10/2018 6:49 am : link
many options at 4, could go defense or offense. But a QB at one is highly likely after Dorsey's recent trades.

Not really sure how much credit you can give Dorsey
eclipz928 : 3/10/2018 7:30 am : link
He kinda just walked into a sweet situation with the Browns, having virtually unlimited cap space and a shit load of premium draft picks. Would be difficult for any GM to screw up.
The Browns seem to have a plan in place
Mike from Ohio : 3/10/2018 8:27 am : link
And are aggressively pursuing it. But they are the Browns and nobody has been "put on notice" until they actually do something. They have earned skepticism.

I like that they are not relying on mid round picks, but using those to acquire good (not great) NFL talent. Landry and Taylor are not All-Pros, but both have accomplished much more than most 3rd and 4th round picks do. They have picks at the top of the draft to get their All-Pros, so they are hedging that risk with solid talent elsewhere.

Trading away Kizer and acquiring Taylor with one year on his deal says to me they want to draft and sit a QB this year. I would not be surprised if they didn't want Allen and know he needs some time to learn. The question is, do they gamble with Barkley at #1 and just hope Allen - or their other QB choice, is still there at #4? I doubt they try and trade up. This is not a win now team. I think the odds increased that they take the QB they like at #1, and then take BPA at #4 where the likely get Chubb, Nelson or Fitzpatrick.

I think that would be the start of a really solid rebuild in Cleveland.
I sure hope Cleveland takes Barkley at #1...
M.S. : 3/10/2018 8:52 am : link

...then we have a choice of QBs, or land a haul of draft picks trading down, or take the best non-QB on the Board at #2.

Will be interesting to hear any leaks coming out of the Giants that they're jonesing for Barkley.

That would mean they want Cleveland to take him #1.

great analysis m.s. Compare stats from a playoff team that can run the ball and protect the QB to a dumpster fire with a scheme that a 3rd grader on the playground could devise a plan to stop.

Reveals exactly why many here, including myself, are ready to move on from Eli.
Why does anyone believe they that they will pass on a QB
Jay on the Island : 3/10/2018 10:15 am : link
They will definitely take a QB in the first round. Taylor is a stop gap. Why would they take Nelson when they have one of the league's best guard duo's locked up long term?
We wanted
GMen23 : 3/10/2018 10:18 am : link
At the end of the day, leading unto the combine, we had a lot of chatter about the "Reese Regime" telegraphing their preferences (see 2016, Apple, not Conklin).

Gettlemen, has Cleveland just as baffled as us. Wasn't that our hope?

Is it A QB or Barkley? Do we make a small trade down, and take Nelson. Yeah I know, if you love him take him at 2. But, I'd gamble we could get him at 4, or maybe as low as the Jets. Chubb, might be Julius Peppers, but Nelson might be Jonathan Martin. Which side of the ball needs more help? We'd get more than Cleveland's First, 2nd rd pick.

Drafttek value chart
2nd -2600
4th - 1800, 33rd - 580 (if we want Nelson, good enough for me. This draft is really strong 25 through 40 at our need positions.

Bottom Line: Best QB in this Draft or Barkley. Or Nelson plus picks. (Cleveland never gave away 1, 4, 33, or 35 yesterday. (Of course if Indy takes Nelson, and they need OL, this fails, but I'd gamble. In this scenario. We get minimum Chubb, and a top 5 guard.tackle, & RB at 33 & 34.
First of all
MetsAreBack : 3/10/2018 10:22 am : link
Dorsey stepped into shit with all the draft picks inherited at his disposal. Clinics were put on by the prior regime such as getting the #4 overall pick in this draft just to take on Brock Osweiler's contract, etc.

Second, he overpaid for both Taylor and Landry. I keep hearing Taylor is a stop gap, and that's likely true - but they just gave away a high 3rd round pick for a one year stopgap (and a guy Buffalo was probably going to cut this summer anyway)? That's expensive, and they'd have been better off with Keenum or even Glennon as their stopgap.

And Miami couldnt afford Landry's contract, nor is it/will it be a team friendly deal moving forward. Getting back a 4th and a 7th for him was a huge win for Miami. Cleveland overpaid, probably because they can't get guys like this to sign with them in free agency. IMO they should have just brought back Terrell Pryor and maybe used Duke Johnson more in the slot too.

The Kizer deal was fine and likely means Fitzpatrick is off their board. It is incredible how badly Hue Jackson botched that situation this past year, yet he keeps his job at 1-31 but the GM who set this all up and who wisely sabotaged a ridiculously bad AJ McCarron deal gets tossed.

I dont these moves tell us much about whether they are going Barkley or QB with their #1. I guess that they havent moved Duke or Crowell yet (not sure the latter has trade value) hints that maybe Barkley isnt the guy, but who knows.
browns
Mr. Nickels : 3/10/2018 11:25 am : link
already have two guards they will NOT take Nelson. Stop it.

They are going QB one of their 2 picks. HAVE to.
.....and then
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/10/2018 12:34 pm : link
Nelson and Barkley will consume the ARC North by shooting divine fireballs from their asses.
Or Barkley and Chubb
KWALL2 : 3/10/2018 12:51 pm : link
Then draft Lamar Jackson later.
Reasonable thought,
Keith : 3/10/2018 12:52 pm : link
but they still need a QB. As it stands now, Taylor is not a guy you build around.
Think the Browns have a QB target at #1
TMS : 3/10/2018 1:31 pm : link
not Barkley. So we have to make a decision .
Same old Browns would be taking Barkleyand Nelson
Matt M. : 3/10/2018 3:06 pm : link
because that would mean they were sold on Taylor.

The smart move is Barkley at 1 and then a QB at 4. They would be guaranteed one of the top 2 QBs while also nabbing Barkley. Taking QB 1 they get the QB they want and then maybe Nelson, but not the dynamic running game to support a young QB.

they do NOT guarantee one of top two QBs...if it goes

Barkley
QB

colts will trade out with broncos lets say....

at 3 broncos take QB

browns at 4 would get third best QB. colts would do this because then at 5 they KNOW they can still get chubb or nelson
They won't get both unless we go along.
TMS : 3/11/2018 2:30 pm : link
So maybe we can do business if thats how they want to roll.? Our 2nd for their 4th plus more picks in the second/ third round ? Thier GM knows his way around and so does ours. Exciting draft coming up for sure.

You are assuming the Colts don't trade their pick to someone drafting a QB. Its very possible that 2 QB's are off the board by pick 4.
Browns Will Take Barkley #1 And Will Take
pa_giant_fan : 3/11/2018 2:43 pm : link
Mayfield at #4, He will learn the offense and take over from Taylor by midway thru the season. The reason they traded for Taylor was he can run the offense system they will be running under Mayfield. Also Taylor is only signed for 2018.
Interesting so how does that give

I keep reading this and ... giving up the first pick of the 3rd round for a guy you intend to play for you for ~8 games ... would be really incompetent.
