NFT: NCAA Tournament

PatchoguePete : 3/13/2018 11:31 am
Hey BBI! I'm new to the website. Long time viewer, first time poster. Aside from being a big Giants fan, I'm a huge fan of college basketball, especially the NCAA tournament. I'm a Stony Brook grad (go Seawolves! We made the tournament last year for the first time just to get blasted by Kentucky). I'm also a Tar Heels fan since my girlfriend went to UNC (I know, scandal, scandal).

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on who they like for the Final 4 and eventual champs. I have UNC, Virginia, Duke, and Villanova in the Final 4 with UNC winning. Virginia is great and I like Arizona as well in this tournament. My sleeper teams are South Dakota State to win a few games, and Miami.

Tonight, I have St Bonaventure and LIU-Brooklyn.
Hope you're right against the Bonnies
Greg from LI : 3/13/2018 11:35 am : link
I think Stockard is going to play, but who knows how healthy he actually is. They'll need him to pull off the upset.
Let's go Rhody!

Pulling for the Bonnies as well.

I have URI knocking off Duke in the 2nd round. Grayson Allen is such a piece of shit that it has to happen. Actually I hope Iona does it. I just don't have the stones to pick that one!
Went to St. Bonnies
The 12th Man : 3/13/2018 12:07 pm : link
Stockard practiced yesterday. He will be a game time decision. I have heard though that he will be playing. He has really turned things on the last 15 games. Go Bona's!!!
My only reason for not wanting to pick UNC
Giants in 07 : 3/13/2018 12:28 pm : link
is the law of averages.

Three straight championship games would be a tremendous feat.

I keep going back and forth but I think i'm going with Arizona, Michigan, Michigan St and Villanova

My dad went there too, his freshman year was the Final Four season. He'll be over the moon if they win this one.

and I have a good feeling about tonight. I drove up to D.C. and saw them lose to Davidson in the A10 semifinals, but they played a solid game without Stockard. Just not enough firepower. He might be limited with his hammy, but at least he's not a scratch.
committee
giants62 : 3/13/2018 1:25 pm : link
I believe there were only 4 teams that were ranked number 1 at some point this year. Virginia, Villanova, Mich. St, and Duke, and somehow the committee put two of the four, mich st and Duke in the same half of the same bracket. And in another half of another bracket they managed to put three of the conference tournament champs...Virginia, Kentucky and Arizona. Exactly how do you do that?
once the committee
PaulBlakeTSU : 3/13/2018 2:22 pm : link
makes its seed list from 1-68, building out the bracket is not that complicated.

There are several rules that the committee follows regarding geography, not having teams from same conference in 1-4 seed line in same region, avoiding home crowd disadvantage in first round, avoiding teams that met a certain number of times in a season. Then the committee adds up the true seeds of the top 4 seeds in each conference to ensure balance (not having a difference of greater than 5).

Many think the committee is building brackets in order to create certain match-ups for specific narratives but it just isn't the case.

Adams needs to be very big tonight!

De'Andre Hunter is out for the tournament with a broken wrist. He was our X-factor and most talented player on the team.

EVERY GOD DAMN YEAR someone gets hurt.

2012, Joe Harris has a club on hand
2014 Anthony GIll hobbles ankle in Michigan STate game
2015, Justin Anderson has appendix removed and breaks bone in hand at end of season
2017, Wilkins has double-pneumonia and doesn't play.

Can't catch a god damn break.

Agree 12th. He has kind of disappeared the last few games. Mobley can't do it all--but he came close against the Spiders. He was unconscious. Griffin could help too.

And I've heard from many places that Brogdon was playing through an undisclosed injury in the 2016 tournament.

Injuries happen, I know, but ours always seem to happen at the end of the goddamned season. Don't really have an obvious replacement, either, unless Tony throws caution to the wind and gives Huff some minutes.
That sucks for UVA

My niece row crew for UVA. She is very good friends with Jack Salt. They have been so psyched about this team all year.

That is awful news. Kid is a real difference maker, and, I think, UVA's best pro prospect...

Not really unless they go on a crazy run. He was such a versatile player. The only guy who can score inside reliably, and can also shoot from the perimeter. He could guard 1-4, and he was our zone-buster.

This makes our offense much more one-dimensional and I expect teams that don't p;lay zone to absolutely sell out to smother the perimter now and dare our bigs to beat them inside.

When we lose, I know it will be because our offense can't function as effectively without Hunter and the bullshit stigma that we don't have an offense will rear its ugly head.

PaulBlakeTSU : 3/13/2018 5:52 pm : link
it's also worth noting that no team is "likely" to make the FInal Four because of the volatility in a single-elimination tournament.

UVA was the most likely in the South to make it, but no way is that the case anymore. The winner of Zona/Kentucky, Cincinnatti, and Tennessee are all more likely in my opinion.

I thought the road was difficult enough with Zona & Kentucky lurking. I don't think I'm hearing "Taps" but the bugler has entered the building...

True, poor choice of words on my part

Sorry about the bad break. Have really enjoyed watching this Virginia team
That sucks for UVA, who, after Villanova, is the team I’d be...
Crispino : 3/13/2018 6:14 pm : link
rooting for to win the tournament. I really like Tony Bennett and respect the way he runs that program.
That stinks.
Mad Mike : 3/13/2018 6:19 pm : link
They're not my team, but I like Bennett and would have been happy to see them do well.
Definitely unlikely now Kyle
Greg from LI : 3/13/2018 6:26 pm : link
We have almost no margin for error. Not only is Hunter really good, he's also our most versatile player who can play in several different roles. Hard to replace. For us to have a chance, a few things have to happen:

-at least one of the guards has to shoot lights out in every game. Hunter was the guy who usually picked up the scoring slack when they are all cold.

-Diakite has to bust out. He's given them a boost on offense in several games lately, now he'd need to do it consistently.

- He also needs to stop the dumbass fouls

- Wilkins needs to find his jumper. He's shown a nice stroke in the past but he's struggled mightily the last two months, to the point that he hardly ever shoots anymore.

We can do those things and win games. Unfortunately, I can't see us stringing 4 wins together that way.
Thanks fellas
Kyle in NY : 3/13/2018 7:10 pm : link
Sorry to hear it. Maybe they rally around the fact most won't even expect them to get past Arizona/Kentucky at this point and they go on an unexpected run

Tough break though for Virginia

I got 'Zona getting out of the South. I got UNC coming out of the West, Nova in the East, & MSU advancing from the Midwest.

MSU vs. UNC in the title game, with MSU avenging their '09 loss to the Heels.

'Zona in the Final 4 has to be the NCAA's worst nightmare, thinking they might have to vacate their wins in a year or 2.
