There are reasons guys are cut, or signed, that we may not consider.
Locker room environment is important; a vet brings knowledge.
Be patient.

I think there's some truth in this, but not to the level where Mark Herzlich deserves to get another contract. If we're saying he's here for "culture", well, he was here last year too. How did that make a difference? You can generate good locker room culture by assembling a talented football team and winning games. You don't have to make a guy a team mascot.

He is a top RB in the league. Under used because of the QB. I have no issue with this at all. He is better than Darkwa.

There's performance, but there's also attitude/desire/locker room presence. Gettelman knows this guy, wants him here. Even if the first side is only so-so (at best, probably), the locker-room side is important too.

If they lose Vereen and/or Darkwa and/or Perkins but feel they added a great locker room guy, that's at least some kind of progress.

I agree, Dane. This has to be a locker room signing.
I'm usually pretty positive thinking
Dr. D : 3/13/2018 9:12 pm : link
but this makes me think of old Hershel Walker, Brian Mitchell, that guy from GB via Philly, Shane Vereen...

Old RBs, no thank you.

Otis Anderson had a few years off from heavy duty usage..

LOL, which statistics are those that say he's a "top RB in the league" ?
I'm scared that he's going to mention making the pro bowl

we're only getting 5 young guys thru the draft. Without $100M in cap space, the rest of the openings on this roster are going to have to be filled with UDFAs and veteran FAs who may not be Pro-Bowlers, but add value to the roster. Let's give Gettleman a chance to find those guys.

Giants could very well be picking in the top 10 of the draft next season.

Based on last season's stats, he's not an upgrade over Darkwa by any stretch...

Darkwa - 171 attempts/751 yards, 4.4 ypc, 5 TDs
Stewart - 198 attempts/680 yards, 3.4ypc, 5 TDs

And Stewart was running behind a half decent OL, while Darkwa was running behind a bunch of scrubs.

Correct and pretty sure we will be. Things are pretty bad, unless some really tough "no name" guys step up And it won'tbe twinkle toes Beckham leading them as he leads from behind.

I hope the Giants don't go about this offseason all wrong
nyjuggernaut2 : 3/13/2018 9:50 pm : link
This roster is in dire need of a re-build, and not just on the OL, but across the board. This to me implies getting younger and ridding yourself of veterans who most likely won't be on the team 2-3 years from now, and not going out a signing over the hill RBs.

It's going to take DG hitting on some winners in this draft and the next years draft to bring in a good base of youth and talent on the OL and other key areas.
Clearly signed as

competition for Barkley.
I think this signing is purely......
BillKo : 3/13/2018 10:13 pm : link
...veteran leadership, especially at the RB unit.

Look at what we have there.....a third year guy in Perkins who is probably wondering if he's worthy of the NFL after last year, and a promising second year guy.

That's it.

I see Stewart as a mentor/coach/situational guy.
Details of Contract

Per Rapoport

Quote:
The #Giants signed RB Jonathan Stewart to a 2-year deal worth $6.9M base, source said with $2.95M guaranteed. The max value is $8.4M for the former #Panthers star.
So many people here just don't get it...
EricJ : 3/13/2018 10:25 pm : link
Do you really think he is here to be the next starting RB or to rush for 1000 yards? This team is fucking broken. We have a horrible locker room with virtually no leadership. We need some professionals here who can help the rest of the team on and off of the field.

I am just laughing the comments about his speed, etc. This is why players think fans are idiots.
I believe vet minimum is slight over $1M
Saos1n : 3/13/2018 10:26 pm : link
Since he has 10 years of experience... might be 9, which would be $915K
if he can convert 3rd and 1 consistently
Chip : 3/13/2018 10:34 pm : link
it will be worth it. He is 235 lbs.
Do people really buy in to paying players for locker room presence?
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/13/2018 10:36 pm : link
Maybe Stewart is a guy players respect, I have no idea, but it's a really easy thing to do to claim a guy was brought in to change "the culture", and really hard to show how that's supposed to happen. This is a team full of veterans already. It's not 52 kids in there that need to be taught what the NFL is. You already changed room by getting rid of a coach who was clearly drowning and who guys knew was a dead man walking.

This team has a massive talent issue and we're signing players to be mentors?

LOL. Okay.

However you guys want to rationalize this - go on ahead.

The player is forked. We signed him to be a running back and he doesn't do that well anymore at this point in his career.

I don't care about the money - it just doesn't move the needle for the team whatsoever. I don't see the point.

If we need Jon Stewart to save our locker room, we probably have bigger problems than we thought.
Pedestrian.
giantsFC : 3/13/2018 10:55 pm : link
Doesnít he get hurt a lot too? Gettleman starting to look like one of those homer fans who remains obsessed with his own players no matter how bad they perform or age. Ugh.

I hope it works out. Free agency has not started out w a bang.

Hopefully not, but my concern is that they are going to over-emphasize "locker room" stuff. If the new coaching staff can't change the culture without bringing in vets on their last legs then we hired the wrong guy(s).
I donít understand this signing at all
GiantsLaw : 3/13/2018 11:30 pm : link
Makes no sense from any perspective.
Stewart's combine was not far off Barkley's
Vanzetti : 3/13/2018 11:40 pm : link
4.46 in the 40 (vs. 4.40)

28 reps (vs. 29)

36.5 vertical (vs. 41)

128 broad jump (vs. did not broad jump)

Recent data analysis suggests the broad jump might be the best predictor of NFL success for skill players. JS put up a great number.

Now, obviously, JS probably could not put up those numbers now, but originally these two guys were not far apart in terms of measurables, and JS is actually a little bigger and has better thickness.

Yea, those numbers running behind Mr Universe Andrew Norwell, don;t look that good compared to Thing 1 and Thing 2 on the Giants OL. But you knew there were be a bunch of Giant fans who would applaud this move, because - well - there's Kool Aid to drink.

He was really explosive his first few years in the league. I remember he was one of my favorite backs to watch around 2008, 2009. Then injuries hit, and he lost a bit of that explosiveness but he still remained an effective back thanks to his vision and bowling ball style.

Not a chance this would stop him from drafting Barkley. Jonathan Stewart did not stop DG from drafting McCaffrey 7th overall last year.

This is a Jerry-esque move.

A bit of an uncoordinated start for DG.

I liked the moves to go younger but Herzlich and Stewart are real head-scratchers.

Hate this move, even if itís only for 1 year/$3M at the end of the day.
This was a move for Coach Shula...

You may end up being right, but letís watch what kind of bucks the following (better) players end up getting:

Doug Martin
DeMarco Murray
LeGarrette Blount
Carlos Hyde
Jeremy Hill
Jerick McKinnon

We already have one data point on Chris Ivory - better player, similar contract.

Dion Lewis is probably irrelevant. Better player, but quite expensive. I will say Iím glad NYG didnít give that contract.
Stewart
NikkiMac : 3/14/2018 7:37 am : link
Is here to have a vet in the RB room ,Herzlich is here for Vet in the special teams room Eli is the vet in the QB room OBJ is the man in the WR room Jackrabbit is the vet in the DB room now was DRC ,Ogletree is now the vet in the LB room ..... if we can get Solder he will be the man in the OLine room and so on

Very simple ..... Stewart good signing and great blitz pick up guy .....
Giants are basically replacing Darkwa with Stewart
IIT : 3/14/2018 7:41 am : link
We've still got Gallman and Perkins (young guys with potential/upside) and we added a vet who can block/pick up the blitz, run out the clock and punch it through at the goalline.

I would have gone after Hyde myself (probably would be a lot more $$$ though), but I see the logic in this signing and it doesn't bother me one bit.
