“I am very pleased that we were able to make Jonathan a New York Football Giant,” said Gettleman. “He is a quality runner with power and speed and brings a veteran, professional presence to our locker room. He’s a terrific addition for us at this time.”

Yeah, not so sure about that "speed" anymore...
I wonder if when DG was watching Stewart "tape" he happened to notice
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/13/2018 8:09 pm : link
that he had blocks to run behind.
yeah watching the highlights
bc4life : 3/13/2018 8:09 pm : link
still ran hard, but I didn't see a whole lot of speed
Ugh
Thinblueline : 3/13/2018 8:11 pm : link
Sad 30 year old running back 😂 Gettlemen and his old Carolina players, who next?
of course what else would he say
bc4life : 3/13/2018 8:11 pm : link
"M-eh, this is the best I could do. That friggin Norwell was like a sone to me, but he went elsewhere..."

Would it really surprise anyone here if Stewart was our starting running back on opening day?
3-13 teams should be tearing it down
The_Boss : 3/13/2018 8:12 pm : link
And getting younger. Especially when it’s quite clear the team won’t surpass the 2 teams ahead of them inside their own division for likely 2 years, at minimum. Going all in on a declining Nate Solder isn’t optimal either for the same reasoning.
hopefully
brunswick : 3/13/2018 8:12 pm : link
he watched more tape of Stewart than he did of Eli. Did we ever find out if DG watched tape until his eyes started to bleed
Get ready
Matt in SGS : 3/13/2018 8:13 pm : link
for the NJ Panthers ;)

christian : 3/13/2018 8:13 pm : link
Was there maybe one game tape Gettleman got his hands on where Stewart showed signs of life?

Seems to have been enough with Manning.

People keep saying shit like this. Have you not been watching football for the past decade?

There's nothing that guys like DG love more than veterans and making young players "earn" something. So no, it wouldn't surprise me whatsoever.

No and Flowers, Jerry, and Jones will be 3/5 of our starting OL
Eric
bc4life : 3/13/2018 8:14 pm : link
It would suprise me, but would surpise me more if h didn't relinsquish snaps as season wore on.

DG's quote didn't have that "he's the guy" vibe.

Nope. In fact, that's exactly what I expect.
This is Reuben Droughns all over again
Eric on Li : 3/13/2018 8:16 pm : link
now we need to hope we can find Brandon Jacobs/Derrick Ward/Ahmad Bradshaw to be ready to handle the majority of the workload early on in the season. Perkins and Gallman might be 2 of those guys.

This roster is in shambles with a 37 year old QB on a serious decline. We have only 5 picks this coming draft and we’ll be dumpster diving for stop gap OL help by Thursday. Yeah, this has quick turnaround written all over it.
I think Stewart was a good pick up...if numbers are favorable
George from PA : 3/13/2018 8:17 pm : link
He has alwaya splits duties....so not too beat up.

Great blocker...protect from blitz

Tough runner....proably our best short yardage guy right now.

What’s the $$$$$$$$$ Guaranteed????
big canoe jeff : 3/13/2018 8:17 pm : link
If DG can’t find a better back in draft then we are fucked
Remember Shula was the OC at Carolina ...
Spider56 : 3/13/2018 8:18 pm : link
If anyone knows what Stewart still has left it’s him. Everyone thought OJ Anderson was done too. People need to chill out and have some faith.

Yes. Don't see this as them signing a starter. Gallman should have first shot at that job.

“Only 5 picks”

good lord shut up already.
Maybe this is the long con
Giantsfan79 : 3/13/2018 8:21 pm : link
Make Cleveland think we have a rb so they take a qb @1 making Barkley available @2
I'm going to be somewhat optimistic
Breeze_94 : 3/13/2018 8:21 pm : link
I've watched a couple of Stewart games from 2017. He still has a bit of a burst, still runs with a very physical style and can break tackles. Nothing special, but maybe he can be decent in an RB2 role/as a short yardage guy. Should be around the vet min though.
This draft loaded

It wouldn't have taken long. Watching Brylcream Ben's offense after 1 game would have had that effect. By week 5, DG would be bleeding out from every orifice.

Both are Oregon Ducks, Legarrette Blount signing next year confirmed.

At least he doesn't hurt us in the comp draft pick formula since he was released by Carolina

Unless Stewart is bringing Jumbo Elliott and Bart Oates with him, I'm not sure we can hang our hats on that example.
Hey Dave
battttles : 3/13/2018 8:23 pm : link
Your new head coach recently said he has no use for an RB who can't catch. Any insight into why you targeted Stewart for NYG?

Well uhh hey yabba dabba he's a runner a good runner hard nosed guy and a leader lemme tell ya about 1977.

Makes this signing dubious. If you wanted a bigger back, maybe Nick Chubb would be available in the third.
hey - Dorsey Levens was impressive against the Eagles.

I would "toss my remote". This better be a play for Saquon.
depends on his role
floridagiantsfan : 3/13/2018 8:27 pm : link
How many times were we first and ten inside the 5 and couldn't run it in. Stewart could solve that problem
Yea
big canoe jeff : 3/13/2018 8:28 pm : link
And some big fast ones
If is contact is non guaranteed
big canoe jeff : 3/13/2018 8:29 pm : link
No harm no foul
LOL @ people think signing Stewart means
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/13/2018 8:31 pm : link
we wouldn't consider Barkley @ 2...
The Giants would be the team to draft Barkley at 2
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/13/2018 8:32 pm : link
and insist on a 3-back rotation.
Y'know, there are two sides to this.
81_Great_Dane : 3/13/2018 8:38 pm : link
There's performance, but there's also attitude/desire/locker room presence. Gettelman knows this guy, wants him here. Even if the first side is only so-so (at best, probably), the locker-room side is important too.

If they lose Vereen and/or Darkwa and/or Perkins but feel they added a great locker room guy, that's at least some kind of progress.

6 years of poor drafts,
old man : 3/13/2018 8:47 pm : link
and little cap, on a 3-13 team; then, as a part of housecleaning Eli, JPP and OV cut ,plus Snacks, 'Rabbit, and OBJ traded for picks, a great draft, and a SB contender for'19 with a new QB.
There are reasons guys are cut, or signed, that we may not consider.
Locker room environment is important; a vet brings knowledge.
Be patient.

Wouldn't surprise me if he's a starter week one and not dressing by week 8.
You guys are pathetic
Dave on the UWS : 3/13/2018 8:48 pm : link
they needed to add a vet presence at RB preferably a big tough back. Stewart is not a starter (unless everyone else steps on their Johnsons). He can help in short yardage and add a pos presence in the locker room - which is almost as important as anything else. If the culture on this team doesn't change than it doesn't matter who the hell they bring in.
Depends on

I think there's some truth in this, but not to the level where Mark Herzlich deserves to get another contract. If we're saying he's here for "culture", well, he was here last year too. How did that make a difference? You can generate good locker room culture by assembling a talented football team and winning games. You don't have to make a guy a team mascot.
Statistically
mdthedream : 3/13/2018 9:03 pm : link
He is a top RB in the league. Under used because of the QB. I have no issue with this at all. He is better than Darkwa.

I agree, Dane. This has to be a locker room signing.
