BBI Mock Draft – DISCUSSION Thread

Matt G : 4/1/2018 10:46 pm
We will use this as a discussion thread to keep the SELECTIONS thread uncluttered. These threads will be used for the duration of the entire draft.

Once a team is on the clock, they will have two hours to make a selection. If a team goes on the clock after 4pm, their two hour window will roll over to the next day. For example, if you go on the clock at 4:30pm, you will have until 9:30 am to make a selection. Picks may be made between 6pm and 9am if GMs are online and following the draft thread. The time limit only applies during the 9am to 6pm timeframe. If the two hour time limit expires, I will make a pick using any list that the GM for the team has sent me in advance (send lists to the email address in my profile) or in the absence of a list, I will use the GBN Big Board with a little discretion so as not make an obvious dumb pick (i.e.: Philadelphia Eagles won’t be taking a QB in the 1st round this year). If a GM misses two consecutive picks without providing a prospect list or making some form of contact with me (email or posting on the draft thread) the spot will be reassigned to one of the BBIers who have expressed an interest to fill the vacancy.

Please utilize the BBI Mock Draft Spreadsheet . The spreadsheet contains the draft order (RD1-6) by team and GM with a fairly comprehensive list of both available and taken prospects based on the GBN Big Board (as well as several other prospects that did not make the GBN Big Board). I will try to keep the spreadsheet and thread updated as often as possible.

It might be time to draft Dez replacement.
The Cowboys and Dez are supposed to meet soon to talk about his contract.
NFL best writers covering the Cowboys in Dallas think that Dez is going to get cut.
And Cleveland starts it off with a controversial selection
MadPlaid : 4/2/2018 10:01 am : link
Barkley at #1.

Very interesting. I doubt it will go that way in the actual draft, but that's what's great about our Mock. We can pick who we think is the best player whether it is the likely selection or not. Based solely on our judgement. Nice start.
Hmmm, was not expecting that.

In a no-trades mock draft, isn’t Barkley almost mandatory at #1?
Big Blue Blogger : 4/2/2018 10:04 am : link
In real life, the Browns probably have such a strong conviction about Darnold/Allen/Rosen that they go QB at #1, and/or trade up from #4 to get Barkley and their preferred QB. In these circumstances, though, I think Barkley makes the most sense. Then Lionheart can claim that whoever he gets at #4 was the QB he wanted all along.

TL/DR version: Good pick Lionheart. Well done.
Don't like the pick for CLE either...
GuzzaBlue : 4/2/2018 10:10 am : link
This would be under the assumption ClE either does not like any of the QB's, has 3 or more of the QB's ranked similar (both unlikely IMO) orrrrr is just CLE being CLE and passing on another franchise QB.

I would have thought to get this ship righted, you make a strong stance on cementing the path by getting "your" guy for the future by taking the QB at one.

Let's see what they get at 4!

With Hyde on the team I don't see CLE going for Barkley
PatersonPlank : 4/2/2018 10:12 am : link
Hyde is a damn good back and still pretty young. I think they go QB at #1, and then BPA at #4.
If CLE likes Allen
Bill L : 4/2/2018 10:13 am : link
then this is probably the most logical move.

Check your tires. Haven't seen Milton here in a while.
I like Rosen and Mayfield a lot too.
Andy in Halifax : 4/2/2018 10:15 am : link
Darnold isn't as good of a passer right now compared to the other two but I think that can be improved with coaching. His mobility, arm strength and leadership qualities make him an outstanding QB prospect but his development will be critical. I see a bust risk but I also see a chance of greatness.

Just curious...if you were allowed to trade after the CLE pick, would you have?
Rosen is the better passer right now
Andy in Halifax : 4/2/2018 10:17 am : link
but not nearly as athletic and has injury concerns. If Rosen stays healthy I think he's the best QB in this class, but that injury risk was enough for me to take Darnold.
Honestly, I’m not in love with any of the QBs.
Lionhart28 : 4/2/2018 10:18 am : link
Barkley is in another tier than any of them and will be such a big help to whatever young qb we acquire that we couldn’t pass. He’s a great kid, a tireless worker and oh yeah a physical freak. He makes our offense better day one.

For the most part, I haven’t taken QBs with my first pick in these drafts and prefer value, having done pretty well with Carr and Watson in prior years.
Plus, with the acquisition of Taylor, the young passer doesn’t need to start day one which gives us some added flexibility.

In a mock draft where teams that accumulate the most top prospects are often seen as the winner, sure. I would have traded back to #4 if Cleveland wanted to move up and then take Rosen, Mayfield or Darnold.

In real life, getting a franchise QB is so important I would have spent months collecting date and had a firm conclusion as to the best QB in the class and I would have stayed at #2 and picked him.
Darnold has the tools to be great...
Big Blue Blogger : 4/2/2018 10:20 am : link
...and he’s cleaner physically than the other two QBs. Probably the right pick.

IRL, I think a trade-down is more likely, because the Giants seem to think Eli can rebound and give them two more good years. But that could be a smokescreen or just Plan 1A, with a quick transition to a rookie being Plan 1B.
Barkley going first
Joey from GlenCove : 4/2/2018 10:20 am : link

WRT trading down from #2...
Big Blue Blogger : 4/2/2018 10:29 am : link
... there are too many variables to allow a simple answer: How far? What price? How do they really view Eli, the various QBs, plus Chubb, Nelson, and other blue/red chip prospects? It’s easy enough to say, “Trade down to 4 and still get a prime QB” or “Trade down to 5/6 and still get a top prospect.” But there are assumptions embedded in each of those ideas that might be completely wrong.

Great analysis. And if you do not love any of the QB's, he's the no brainer. Barkley is so good and such a rare talent, he is going to shine. This could actually play out really well for CLE in this mock depending on what happens at 4. Could possibly get Allen and he could have been the guy you wanted out of the QB's. Especially Taylor giving him some breathing room to learn.

I don’t think it makes a huge difference, unless NYJ have two QBs rated very closely. If they have a clear favorite, they still have to get to #2 to be sure of landing their guy.
darnold
SirYesSir : 4/2/2018 10:36 am : link
is talented, but man is he hectic in the pocket. feet are constantly jumping around - I wouldn't say "happy feet" because he's very good at keeping his eyes focused down the field, and one could argue it enables him to escape quickly...but I've seen a lot of throws where he just doesn't seem set, and it hurts his accuracy and velocity

I prefer Rosen on tape by a good margin, but of course personality and injury concerns I can't answer
Barkley sepeates himself
SirYesSir : 4/2/2018 10:38 am : link
as a receiver. There are a few backs with great skills, but this kid runs routes like a seasoned pro and explodes after the catch. He's a crazy weapon that must have OC's drooling.

Oh man can the Jets just pick
BigBlueDownTheShore : 4/2/2018 10:54 am : link
already?
Interesting to note that the auto-pick at #3 is also the obvious pick.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/2/2018 10:55 am : link
Probably doesn’t matter whether Jon is on line or not. Unless he has a hard-on for Allen, the Jets’ new QB is Josh Rosen. That seems likely in real-life too, and it may well be the reason the Jets targeted the #3 slot. There’s obviously some risk that their guy goes in the first two picks; but either they are comfortable with that risk or they don’t have a clear favorite.

25 years since Cleveland has had a franchise QB. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS! And you take a RB. If Dorsey does that he'll be run out of town, I truly believe that. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, I'll say it again, you cannot go any other direction than QB there if you're Cleveland. And the franchise QB they had was just Bernie Kosar. Come on, dude. Cleveland fans would be egging your car as you leave the stadium!
If Barkley really is the second coming of Marshall Faulk...
Big Blue Blogger : 4/2/2018 11:04 am : link
... he is well worth the #1 pick, especially with Cleveland holding the #4 pick and 3 or 4 potential franchise QBs on the board. It’s the right pick, unless you have access to CLE’s draft board and they have a clear favorite among the QBs.
Haven't seen anyone talk about it, and obviously can't happen here
YAJ2112 : 4/2/2018 11:05 am : link

Unfortunately for them, my track record as their fake GM has been better than their actual track record. Also, a QB doesn't have to be the first overall pick to be a franchise guy. They had 3 first round picks last year and didn't take a QB with a single one of them and survived, I think I'll be okay.
Darnold
Thegratefulhead : 4/2/2018 11:14 am : link
If the Giants select Darnold I predict Webb will clearly beat him out and it will leave the Giants with a mess. There will pressure to elevate Darnold anyway because he is a #2 pick. Webb is more accurate, especially deep, and takes better care of the football. IMO opinion, only Rosen or Mayfield beat out Webb in a QB competition.
Jon in NYC must be trying to trade out of the pick

Jon in NYC : 4/2/2018 11:24 am : link
thing about Rosen to me, is that all of his knocks have nothing to do with him throwing the football. If he can stay healthy and out of the media, he should be a very good pro. I'm thinking Matt Ryan-esque, which is definitely worth the no. 3 pick.

We will see. Webb has a much better arm than Darnold. Produced a better a season than Darnold ever has and his measurables are better. He also has spent an entire season working with the receivers, that matters.
