Be Honest! Those rooting for the Giants to win after 0-5

V.I.G. : 4/10/2018 11:42 am
those losses are meaningless distant memories and
you're psyched with the #2.

I understand that argument of
"how you root doesn't affect the outcome of the game"
Sure, but it made a dreadful season have a rooting interest.

Had the same feeling in '03.
Get the pick, blow it all up, new coach, new QB.

Same feeling today.
there's more hand wringing now

than if the Giants didn't have the #2 pick. The majority of the board will be pissed off based on whoever is selected at 2, simply because they wanted to pick/trade someone/where else.
Is this another thread trying to justify why teams

should throw games to get higher picks in the draft?
twas the same in '04

But I wasn't entirely heartbroken when they did. Long term, it was for the best. And it was, outside of a few select people, a genuinely unlikable team from Slick on down. The '17 Giants is something I never want to experience again.

It may be a way to acquire more talented players, but it also breeds a losing mentality or - quit when things get hard.

(Which is conincidently, the type of player Gettleman doesn't want on this team according to his own words and the canning of Bobby Hart).

So, in the end - you might have a better player at 2 than you would have had a 6 (or maybe not) but your team will never win a championship.

and let the draft take care of itself. I've had this debate several times at last game of the season when the team is already eliminated from the playoffs. But what's characteristically different about this current situation is we are not talking about say selecting 8 verses 10, we are talking about a top 2 pick in a year with multiple notable QB prospects and a team with a 37 year QB arguably in decline.
Hence this year I was all in on losing out

You can hate seeing the team lose, root for them to play good football, AND understand that losses are more beneficial for the team.

Its not mutually exclusive IMO

No we didn't. That was 3 or 4 years later. There were plenty of new players on that team that werent there in 2003, including the QB and many of the key players in that 2007 season (Tuck, Eli, Bradshaw, Smith, Burress, etc.) and it also took a change in attitude from the Head Coach.

I agree. As much as I knew losing would ultimately help the team, I couldn't watch the game and root for a loss.
What's the point of this thread?

I really don't understand what the point is.
I'd rather have a shot at an elite franchise QB at #2
Bold Ruler : Mod : 4/10/2018 12:10 pm : link
that could lead the team for 15 years versus winning 3 more games in what was the worst ever season for this franchise.

If Eli were 28 I would have rooted for wins.

With all the young quarterbacks coming out, wanted Giants to be in position to get one if they felt he was the guy.

I don't think it's the players so much as the upper management realizing they hit rock bottom and need to make major adjustments.

Because teams not drafting at 2 don't get a shot at a franchise QB.

Completely depends on what they do with their draft position...
the mike : 4/10/2018 12:20 pm : link
Losing can get very contagious so lets hope last year was an outlier... The 2004 draft was good because Eli turned out to be the second greatest draft pick in Giants history and Snee was a tremendous selection with their second pick.. But the rest of the draft was not good at all...

*the one exception would be the Smith game which, for the only time in 25+ years, I did not watch.
I seriously cannot fathom why this simple concept is so
Brown Recluse : 4/10/2018 12:26 pm : link
difficult for people to grasp:

Quote:
Here’s the problem with tanking in order to better your chances in the draft. To start, no coach or general manager would ever be able to effectively instruct a group of professional athletes to intentionally lose a game while still preserving his ability to ever teach the importance of winning, never giving up or giving your all. If a coach did encourage his players not to try or go all-out for a particular game, he would be heading down a slippery slope, one that potentially cannot be reversed.

A critical aspect of coaching is instilling good habits and a winning attitude into your players. If at any point in that process you introduce tanking, all of your previous teachings and emphasis will be permanently nullified.

One of the biggest risks they’d face would be setting a precedent that could poison the entire team.

To clarify, the nature of professional athletes tends to be dominated by a common thread. Nearly every single NFL player worth anything is fueled by an incredible competitive edge. This edge allows them to survive and thrive under the pressure-filled spotlight that is the NFL.

Why NFL Teams Don't Take For Better Draft Position - ( New Window )
It wasn't that I was rooting for them to lose,
Doomster : 4/10/2018 12:27 pm : link
I just didn't think they could win, not with the players they had out there on offense, not with the offensive strategy we had, and not with a defense that came down to earth a year later....

And looking back at the Broncos game, it wasn't like we turned the corner, they just looked like a team that was worse than us....

The Chiefs was a team that was imploding.....

And the final game was just two teams going through the motions....somebody had to win....

Well yes, they do, but with only 1 team picking ahead of us - we have a larger pool of them to pick from then a team picking 20th.

Why would you want a larger player pool?

It's pretty binary. If we pay him we will win; if we don't, we won't.
The only game I was able to really root for the Giants to lose
Bramton1 : 4/10/2018 12:40 pm : link
was the Raiders game... for obvious reasons. Didn't watch it, and pumped my fist when I saw the Lynch had run for a 50 yard touchdown.

The rest of the games... I just couldn't do it. I wasn't that upset after they lost, but I wanted to see them win.

The Week 17 win against Washington made me nervous... until I saw that Indianapolis had won as well.

Winning and losing games in the regular season should have absolutely nothing to do with the NFL draft. The size of the player pool in April is irrelevant.

This isn't some Madden video game. You can't take the human element out of it. Good luck getting players to listen to their head coach or show up for practice or take anything seriously when they are being told to lose games for the draft. If you think the personality issues on the team last year were an issue and that the entire season was a circus, wait and see what happens when they're actually given permission to act like clowns and take nothing seriously.

Also, 2017 wasn't as hopeless as 2003 was
Bramton1 : 4/10/2018 12:42 pm : link

That's a strange comment. Seems like the Colts are more in a bind because their franchise QB got seriously injured, following the last time their franchise QB got seriously injured.

And both times that happened they put resources immediately into finding a replacement or suitable fill-in.

Of course I remember 2013, I went to every home game and the Dallas game on the road week 1.

the 2017 season had its shit-show of moments as well I guess for comparison, losing to a winless 49ers team, 50 burger by the Rams, shutout by the Cardinals on Christmas Eve, etc.. If i remember correctly, the Giants still had a decent shot to win a playoff spot if they would've beaten Dallas at home Thanksgiving weekend, the Giants went on a 4 game winning streak before the game. The 2017 team couldn't even win 4 games and the season was over the from the OBJ injury in Celeveland in preseason.

I guess 2017 was just draining and dragging on thanks to Philly's success and just got tired of looking at McAdoo and his arrogant moron look. I am ready to move forward.

HIGHLY disagree...look what kamara did for New orleans. look what wentz did for philly in year two. look how zeke IMMEDIATELY made dallas VERY tough to beat. look how fournette made jax immediately better. look how a 3rd rounder in k hunt made KCs offense come flying out of the gate.

draft picks can have immediate impacts on your team.

that being said, i am disappointed how our season went but as it stands, im excited about the second pick and the chance to get a blue chip prospect!
