In the last decade or so, has any high drafted pass rusher lived up to the hype? Clowney? Not yet. Garret? Too early? Even Julius Peppers I never felt was worth his draft pick. I like Chubb but not at 2. Thoughts on pass rushers drafted top 5?
Bosa had 10.5 sacks in 12 games his rookie season and followed that up with 12.5 sacks and 4 FFs last season.
How did Peppers not live up to the hype? He's 4th all time in sacks and a first ballot HOF. And was excellent against the run as well. I haven't reviewed the entire 2002 draft, but the only player even close to him was Ed Reed. Those 2 are far and away the best players in that class and none of the other top 10 picks even come close.
Clowney's been derailed by injuries and not quite the pass rusher he was billed as (though great 2-way player), but Khalil Mack (5th overall) has been great rushing the pass rusher. 40.5 sacks through 4 seasons, including 3 straight with 10+. Also 9 FFs and 11 PDs in his career.
Suh and McCoy aren't edge rushers, but they're as good as it gets from an interior pass rush outside of Donald. Arguably the 2 best players selected in the first round of the 2010 draft (other notables: Berry, JPP, Dez, Demaryius Thomas).
Going back to 2006, Mario Williams is still a top 3-5 pick in that draft. I don't think he's HOF material, but finished with just shy of 100 career sacks.
Watt went 11 overall (first edge rusher off the board) Â
Not only is he #4 on the all-time sack list but he was also awesome defending the run. He also somehow had 11 interceptions. 49 forced fumbles. 9x pro bowler. "NFL 2000s All Decade Team". Perhaps the best athlete of all time of any player 280+ lbs.
What do Bosa, Peppers, Mack, Garrett, Clowney, etc. have in common? They did not elevate their team to championship status. Von Miller is the lone exception.
So, if you're trying to decide between Chubb and either a QB or Barkley, I'd take my chances with the QB or RB.

Wow, there is so much wrong with this. First off, we won 2 SB's because of our beastly Dline. Secondly, outside of QB, no one position elevates a team to champtionship status. Lastly, please name all of the RB's that elevated their teams to championship status.

QB is the only position that can single-handedly raise a team to championship status and there are maybe 3-4 QBs in history that could do that. You're saying that one of the QBs in this class is guaranteed to join those select few?

And 2 more in large part thanks to this edge rusher named LT. Wonder if some of these posters ever heard of him!

The Ravens D (rightfully) gets all the credit, but Jamal Lewis was damn good for them that year.
Faulk was the engine of the Rams SB team.
Not that it has relevance in today's game, but you could argue Emmitt was more critical than Aikman.

They had the DLine previously. Strahan was with the team a long time before the 2017 season. What was the big difference between the previous teams and that one? QB
Once upon a time there was an edge rusher named Lawrence Taylor... Â

Respectfully disagree, football is not about one player. You can have 10 studs but if # 11 is a huge mismatch problem you can lose. Too many guys on the field at once for just one to elevate a team to championship status.

Von Miller went 2nd overall.
To be fair, if he feels Peppers wasn't worth the pick, no amount of research was going to help his case!

I’m pretty sure he has lived up to expectations. 3x NFL Defensive MVP, 4x All-Pro and Pro Bowl.
Von Miller went 2nd overall.
I stand corrected...
Delete this thread just for that statement.

Great example of a player you take from the 5-10 range, but not in the top 3

Lynch played a huge part for Seattle as well.

Should've been 2 titles!

Maybe he doesn't dominate the Giants but just look at his career numbers, they are outstanding. He's a first ballot HOFer.
