Albert Breer update on the NYG

NFL Update
& #8207;@MySportsUpdate

Some insight to the #Giants thinking via @AlbertBreer: GM Dave Gettleman really likes USC QB Sam Darnold. Coaches like Wyoming QB Josh Allen. Everyone in the organization likes Penn St. RB Saquon Barkley. They've done their homework on DE Marcus Davenport in case they trade down.
Still a lot of guessing but Ill say this...

if they go QB, the better go with the one Pat Shurmur wants rather than the one John Mara wants.

Agreed if DG wants Darnold, and Shurmur wants Allen or Rosen and they go with Barkley because that is who Mara wants then we are in trouble.
Insight..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/12/2018 9:46 am : link
anymore just translates to speculation without knowing anything.

This is the downside of social media. One is better to type a tweet that says nothing to stay on people's feeds than to actually provide insight.

Yesterday they were very impressed with Chubb
Essex : 4/12/2018 9:57 am : link
the one guy we never hear they are impressed with is Rosen. But their actions seem to indicate he is a very serious thought. 5 guys to their pro-days, private workout followed by a dinner with the owners, two days here in NY. I have no idea what the Giants are going to do, but I cannot wait for this to be over already.

I'm a confirmed rumor skeptic but Breer is a guy who has at least shown he has actual sources on upcoming player visits and such. Which is more than can be said for most of the draftniks.

Leads off the piece by saying he has it from multiple sources that Browns are still in decision process re Darnold vs Allen.

Since when does John Mara
TrueBlue56 : 4/12/2018 10:00 am : link
Ever make any decisions to the draft. John Mara has always left the decisions to those in charge.

The only time I can recall the owner being involved was Wellington going with the Eli trade
I don't know ...

I am good with a number of possible scenarios, but Josh Allen at 2 would be a remote thrower.

is the kind of guy I think you stay away from in a trade down scenario. If they're in that 12 range with Buffallo's pick I think LB/CB/S will be the best depth options. Maybe even DL with a guy like Vea

If it's a battle royale, just go SQ ,or trade it it's right.
No
DanMetroMan : 4/12/2018 10:09 am : link
offense to anyone in particular but I do find it funny that Allen could be a "remote thrower" as if anyone on here knows how realistic it is for Allen's accuracy to improve more than an actual NFL head coach extensive QB grooming experience (I actually want Barkley or Mayfield) so I'm not even #TeamAllen. Just kind of weird.

I think it's funny that you find entertainment. Show proof Mara has not let the GM make drafting decisions.

Like I said the only time I recall the owner ever putting his input in anything draft related was the Eli trade. Of course a situation like that would require any owners input

Agree 100% with this. I have asked some other posters on other threads why they think their evaluation of a QB is likely better than the one DG, Shurmur, Shula and the scouts did, and I have never gotten an answer. I get having an opinion on who you think is the best, but getting angry if they don't take that guy? It means you think you are better at this part time than the professionals doing it full time. Baffling.

I am not a big Allen fan, but if they take him at #2 I am going to be pretty excited that they think they can harness all of those physical gifts into a top flight QB. And if they don't take him (if available) I will assume they concluded they can't do that. Either way, I trust them to make that call much more than I trust my own ability to do it.
LOL..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/12/2018 10:43 am : link
the owners dictate the picks that will be made?

Holy shit, we've come full circle. arniefez used to beat the drum that the owners were inept and didn't care what decisions were made as long as asses were in the seats, not they are pulling the strings on draft day?

I wish I was making that up!!

JonC says the Giants have loved and wanted Darnold since before this current regime was totally in place.

So if you are to believe that, then yea, Mara's influence can certainly factor in.

What is such a joke about that?

Another note on premature evaluations based on gurus observations of college stats:
Watson was ALSO deemed less than elite because of "inaccuracy" at Clemson. He ended up doing reasonably well; there are more than one indicators of pro success.

Marc Ross stated Mayfield is his favorite among the QB class.

Darnold, with his character and the way he goes about handling himself has been a safe guess for who NYG likes. The problem is, he more than likely will be drafted @1.

FWIW, I heard the Mara's have been hands on. Obviously there's trust in Gettleman as a talent evaluator but the Mara's have not been absent during this process.
Keowee...
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/12/2018 11:05 am : link
What??

Watson was a 67.4% accurate passer in college. And he was really consistent always being in close range to that 67%

Draft Input
twostepgiants : 4/12/2018 1:34 pm : link
Heres a sample:

What is your favorite Wellington Mara memory?
A: It was the Justin Tuck draft [in 2005]. He had an injury, he was hurt his last year in college. We turn around and Jerry [Reese, former GM] said, Man, Id love to take this guy in the third round. Id love it if this guy was in the third round. Third round comes, were talking about some players, and Justins one of em. And Wellington leaned forward and said, We discussed this already. We said wed be thrilled if he was here in the third round. Why are we talking about it?

So lets add it up. If Wellington was involved in discussions of something like the drafting of a 3rd round pick. What kind of involvement will John Mara have in the 2 pick?

The Maras are gonna set the example for the direction and tone of what they are looking for from the outset. They will give their GM freedom to operate under that direction. Gettleman will not make a pick outside of those parameters but make no mistake they will set the parameters.

There will not be a pick made by Gettleman that the Maras dont like. Because the Maras were involved from the outset into the thinking. The Maras wont dictate the individual selection. But lets not fool ourselves into thinking that they have no say.

Allen

Just seems a bit raw to be #2 overall to me.

If its a QB - I'm good with Darnold, Mayfield, or Rosen.

That's in alphabetical order BTW.

So, the GM and not the owner says, Man, Id love to take this guy in the third round. Again, the GM said this, now 3rd round comes and tuck is still on the board. There is a discussion of who to take and Wellington reminds the GM of what he said earlier, but it's ownership involved in the drafting of players???

I can see why Mara would lean toward Barkley, Chubb, or a trade-down.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/12/2018 2:11 pm : link
BC redshirt freshman Anthony Brown will be draft-eligible soon. A knee injury ended Brown's first season, but he should be fine. So the Giants just need Manning/Webb to serve as a bridge.
Just to state the obvious, John Mara is not his dad.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/12/2018 2:25 pm : link
Wellington Mara made most of the major personnel decisions for about twenty years, and was deeply involved for close to forty. His track record after his father's death was awful, but there was never any doubt about his influence until Rozelle intervened in 1979.

John obviously has signoff authority, but he doesn't fancy himself a scout. His expertise is in maximizing revenue. He's as likely to ask which QB will sell the most jerseys as which one can throw a deep seam to Evan Engram.
IF this is legit, the fact that the staff loves Allen is worrisome
The_Boss : 4/12/2018 3:48 pm : link
in my opinion. Other than a few exceptions like Mayock, most draft "experts" are skeptical regarding his ability to succeed in the NFL. Let someone else live with Allen. I'd prefer either one of the LA QB's.
Just to reference the OP ass well as above post
chopperhatch : 4/12/2018 4:21 pm : link
Wouldnt the favor of the coaching staff be a huge tipping point if there is debate between two players? Honestly if the staff likes Allen better, their expertise in developing a player should be paramount wjen deciding between two players who play the same position shouldnt it?

I love Darnold, but the argument for Allen is more than compelling.

Strongest Arm
Highest wonderlic
Played in the cold
Big strong, mobile
Great personality

If the coaching staff likes him better, that should be very very telling.
