NFT: Prince ... I just never got the attraction there.

"Prince ... I just never got the attraction there. Didn't think he was talented at all. I couldn't get past all the screeching."

- Actual quote, co-worker, moments ago

:::Serenity now:::

Music is certainly personal. But ... I hate people.

bahahahaha ...

Mrs. Beez just recently started listening to Zeppelin, beyond classic rock airplay. . She'd heard their music. I got her to dig a little deeper and she's really enjoying it. Maybe 2 weeks ago, I said something about that Lincoln Center Honors performance where Ann and Nancy Wilson front the "Stairway" performance. I mentioned something about Zeppelin and England ...

Mrs. Beez: "Wait. Led Zeppelin is British?"

We didn't speak for 2 days.

Not being a prince fan but to say he’s not talented is moronic
Almost completely unrelated,

but kinda cool ... (this came up on the side of one of the Prince vids) ...

Thought this was pretty fun.

Prince was great, BUT...

Willing to bet your coworker doesn't like much of anything from that genre...

Is uncomfortable with Prince's sexuality. Dude DID lay it on thick. Some people just can't handle that.

This is a subject that semantics matter.

I'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard than the Beatles, but you cant say they weren't "talented". That's just dopey.
Loving Led Zeppelin...

We both strongly agree on the genius of Jimmy Page.
PRINCE was original
Dave on the UWS : 4/12/2018 3:08 pm : link
as a song writer, guitarist, and singer. No one else like him. If he wasn't your taste- fine, but to say "no talent", that's absurd!
I think Prince was more intriguing to the music critics
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 4/12/2018 3:10 pm : link
than to the average listener. He was always labeled as a musical genius. Sometimes those types don't translate. To me, as great a musician as he was, his stuff never made me want to rush out and buy it. Same deal as Stevie Ray Vaughan, great guitarist and brilliant musician, but his work didn't speak to me. Occasionally, sure. But not central to what I like.
Saying he wasn't talented is objectively wrong.
Don in DC : 4/12/2018 3:26 pm : link
He was objectively extremely musically talented.

But someone saying he or she didn't like his music? That's personal taste.

The only talent he didn't have was acting
RobCarpenter : 4/12/2018 3:36 pm : link
Even as a songwriter alone he was incredible -- and then when you add on all of his skills as a musician and a dancer -- anyone who says he wasn't talented is tone deaf.

But Prince seriously was a terrible actor.
He was also a talented song writer ...
Beer Man : 4/12/2018 3:48 pm : link
I know many here didn't like his personal song style, but he wrote a number of hits performed by other singers.
I saw Prince in the round at MSG like 30 years ago

The guy played every instrument onstage. With ease.

The guy gave away songs to to girls he liked--Manic Monday, The Glamorous Life, Sugar Walls, etc. And he wrote songs that were huge hits for others--I Feel for You, Nothing Compares to You, etc.

And of course, Jungle Love.

Most of what I listen to is punk or metal, but I think Prince is terrific. Pretty much the only pop music I've ever liked. He wrote terrific songs and was an immensely talented musician.
not a prince fan

and many of his songs are crap. but many others are pretty creative.

and that video he did w those two birds pulling their clothes off and making out w them...priceless.

Just tossing music stuff in here this afternoon ...

Have you guys caught any of these Live From Daryl's House features? Daryl Hall has people in and they do a mini-concert at his home studio.

(Surrender is somewhere in the 28-29-minute ballpark. But some other interesting stuff.)

This one's pretty cool. Plenty more.

everyone has different tastes in music, some do not listen to the funk R&B thing as a priority. Talented guy for the product he put out. Over hyped however, especially on specific instruments.

Never liked Prince
kinard : 4/12/2018 5:59 pm : link
Would love to say he wasn't talented but then it would only be because I'm jealous and bitter.

What I hate most is that I never "got" him. Maybe that's what pisses me off most of all - that's it's my fault, not his...
He was incredibly prolific as a songwriter
RobCarpenter : 4/12/2018 6:06 pm : link

Those are actually recorded at his Restaurant, Daryl's House, up here in Pawling, NY, not at his home studio. Though they are usually recorded when the restaurant is not open to the public, and they clear all the tables out for the recorded sessions. But it's a great place to see a show. I've seen a few bands there. It's a nice sounding room. Food is pretty good too. Well worth checking out.

Here's a phenomenal fusion jazz funk Prince album only the most avid Prince fans have probably even heard of. Prince on keys/guitar at age 19, with Andre Cymone on bass and Bobby Z (supposedly) on drums. Recorded at Loring Park rehearsal room in 1977 in Minneapolis.

twice at Radio City. Two of the best live shows I saw. Incredible performer.
I'm not a fan of Prince
Gregorio : 4/12/2018 11:32 pm : link
but I did see him perform live (PNC Bank Arts Center, NJ, 1998), and he was the total package; played multiple instruments, guitar, bass, piano, sang lead, all while giving a hell of a performance. I was positively impressed.
Yeah like many here I'm not a huge fan personally
ChaChing : 4/13/2018 1:30 am : link
yet talent isn't really in question. I was lucky to see him for a few tunes back in the day when I did a little sound at the Roxy. He was playing gtr for a singer he was producing / promoting. I was a good 10ft away. He's one of those music lifers who's great at all of it. Also a phenomenal performer in general

Zepp. I feel like if a girlie gets Thank You in the ears she's done. Or Fool in the Rain. Among many others...
