Excitement about 3rd round pick

markky : 4/13/2018 10:26 am
Wow, was going to start a thread about how we could get a player in the 3rd round but looked at our history. Wow.

Double O
Da'Monster
Hosley
Jernigan
Barden, Beckum

We had better make hay in rounds 1 and 2. Anything after that looks like a sub-50% chance of getting a player. Really hoping Gettleman can change our success rate.
I was all about the Ramses Barden pick.

The past is irrelevant

We have a new GM now and head of college scouting.
Seems like picks 10-60 or so

There is a big second tier, so stock pile second rounders?
Very good point and something Gettleman needs to fix starting now...

This is a key driver in the precipitous talent drain during Reese's tenure. You simply have to hit on the majority of your selections in the top hundred picks in the draft, especially guys in the third round. We have had virtually no contribution whatsoever from third round draft picks over the last decade. And each of our super bowl runs was driven by huge contributions from some of these guys...

2008 #95 Mario Manningham
2007 #81 Jay Alford
2005 #74 Justin Tuck
1987 #83 Stephen Baker
1984 #59 Jeff Hostetler
1983 #70 Karl Nelson

There's little doubt that good players will come out of round three.
Big Blue Blogger : 4/13/2018 10:51 am : link
That is true every year. The likelihood of any particular team getting one of those good players, however, isn't very high.

The Giants are no exception. In recent years, they have been something of an exception in the wrong direction. Small sample, so I don't know whether the problem has been systemic or just a run of bad luck. Some of those picks were highly controversial at the time they were made. Others were quite popular.
Why on earth would anyone look at a past front office's picks,
Mad Mike : 4/13/2018 10:52 am : link
good or bad, to form expectations about what this front office will do?

Drafted two great offensive linemen in Carolina in the 3rd and 4th round (G Trai Turner and RT Daryl Williams) Hopefully he will continue to do so here. Perhaps Austin Corbett, Frank Ragnow, or Brian O'Neill.

If there's a reason, it has to do with all the holdover scouts. Of course, we don't know whether the main problem in recent drafts was the scouting reports or the way Reese and Ross used the information... or both... or neither.
this is why Reese/ Ross are gone

We could get two good players in the third round

I don't think anyone was excited by the Beckum pick, I think the universal response was wtf?

Actually a lot were and I believe Phil in LA predicted it.
The Barden/Beckum truthers
Mike from SI : 4/13/2018 11:51 am : link
were the worst.
Jobs were lost
TMS : 4/13/2018 12:05 pm : link
because of that record. That why DG is back.
Seems to me ...
BigBlue1013 : 4/13/2018 1:17 pm : link
Jerry Reese didn't mind reaching on prospects in the 3rd round. And Jerry wanted dudes who had potential but weren't any good.

3rd rounds shouldn't be use for reaching or potential but more guys who are talented and can contribute year 1. While rounds 4-5-6-7 are for the reaching/potential prospects.

About 90% of the BBI mocks had the Giants taking Barden.
Package the 2 picks and move up in the second I say

Be careful posting anything insulting about Giants draft pick history

on here. dem board club boyz will go at you.

Looking at our history in any round is pointless

unless you think it’s Mara making the pics. Even our very good Roubd 2 track record is meaningless.

One thing about the 3rd rd this year
DavidinBMNY : 4/14/2018 7:54 am : link
We have 2 high 3rd rd picks. I think both are before 70. If we keep those picks at that spot I think there's a good shot 1 of them will be used on a CB and Gettleman has been decent with CB's.
What are you talking about?
twostepgiants : 4/14/2018 10:36 am : link
We landed the great Davis Webb in the 3rd round.

He is the future of the franchise.

Haven’t you heard? Its all over BBI.

Davis Webb reminds me of Joe Montana. They have very similar smiles.
