I mean, we won what... 10 or 11 in a row in April of 2015, right?

We had a 10-0 homestand if I remember right

No reason we can't keep this going.

I remember hearing that the Mets liked Lobaton because they loved how he handled the pitchers and worked with them - am I remembering that right?

Not exactly something to get super excited over, but if he's solid defensively and can be an asset to the pitchers for now, we should be okay.

Would be nice if someone could get back there and throw a fucking runner out.
Big homestand!!!!!

Bring on the freaking robots.
I think Matz is looking good
ZGiants98 : 4/13/2018 7:23 pm : link
He's already hitting 94 mph in early April. He is getting the breaker over. The change looks better. The thing with Matz is he's not as refined as a Thor or deGrom. Sometimes the fastball will be borderline and if he's not getting the calls or getting squeezed he'll get frustrated. From a physical standpoint though, Im impressed.

this is the best Met team since 06 by far. Obviously if injuries hit they may have a shopping list at the deadline, but other than catcher and maybe 1 more reliever this team just doesn't have a lot of holes.

This... fucking....team....

I never ever imagined that this season would start this way. I don't think even the biggest optimists here did.

I'm not going to let myself get too crazy yet - but I will say that outside of the 2015 run, this is the most fun I've had watching this team in a long fucking time. So, I'm just going to keep enjoying it.

It's crazy the way things are just coming together. I thought the pen could be good - but right now, it is insanely deep. Tonight was a perfect example of why.

Lugo didn't have it tonight (and I 'm probably his biggest fan here) which is fine - he's not going to be perfect every time out. This is a new role for him.

Ramos came in and did what he had to - Blevins didn't. But it didn't matter, because we still had Gsellman to get out of it. And right now, Familia looks like one of the best closers in baseball. The guy is just lights out. Walks the tightrope a lot and makes things interesting - but the Benitez comparisons aren't fair, IMO. Familia is better.

We still don't even have Swarzak yet!

This is the deepest pen we've had since 06 when we had DO, Bradford, Sanchez, Feliciano, Heilman, and Wagner.

We have two aces, Wheeler might be turning a corner - Matz hasn't been spectacular, but he's good enough so far. We'll see what we get from Harvey.

But the biggest thing to me is the team chemistry. Every single guy has bought in. Todd Frazier has been a godsend.

It's funny too, because when Frazier was in CIN, I really wanted us to trade for him but he was in the midst of a pretty big year and the cost would have been pretty huge - but then when we signed him this year, I was indifferent.

Couldn't have been more wrong about the guy. He is perfect for this team. He's galvanizing, he's making plays in the field, he's getting on base, he's hitting - the guy is a fucking gamer and a leader.

Cespedes looks energized and excited - Drooby has been outstanding, Rosario is coming along, Scooter is going to be a star, Bruce is hitting, A-Gon has come through... it's crazy.

I love everything about this team right now. Mickey is awesome. We're deep everywhere. And even some of the reports coming out of the farm right now are encouraging.

I know we will hit a rough patch sooner or later, I know guys are going to get hurt - but if we can avoid the types of sweeping injuries that wrecked 2017 and most of 2016, this is going to be such a fun season.

Frasier is a really interesting player, and once Cabrera said he didn't want to play 3rd he was basically a no-brainer because he checked a lot of boxes. He'd thrived in his short stint in NY, he had the rep of being a very solid defensive player, and while that 1 all star season was more of a fluke, offensively there was a lot to like. He gets on base, he's not a super high strikeout guy (21% career is basically average), he has some power, and in his time in the NL he was even a decent contact hitter (.260 ish). When they signed him I thought he could have a similar overall impact to Granderson, being a very good professional player with some holes and good in the clubhouse. I didn't expect him to be such an impactful leader right away.

Everyone said he was good in the clubhouse but in that respect he's way overdelivered - as you said he has galvanized the entire team with the grinder approach.

Also AsCab deserves a big shoutout because without him going public we may not have even gotten Frazier. They could have even traded Nimmo for Harrison or something. Not only has Frazier been great but AsCab looks really comfortable at 2nd. He turns a great DP and offensively while his upside may not be through the roof he's a least reliable and proven here. There is always a little risk someone like Harrison or Kipinis wouldn't have fit. Neil Walker obviously didn't for whatever reason despite having a good rep.

Great post Arc!
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2018 10:54 am : link
I love this team but I really dont see much of a difference from last year's roster. Health is the big key. If Lugo and Gsellman were healthy last year they likely end up in the pen as well.

Everybody downplayed how massive our injuries were last year. No team could have sustained what we went through.

Hopefully, most of that is in the past. Losing our catchers does weaken our lineup a bit.

This is a big test for Harvey tonight. He looked good in the first start but really seemed to struggle against the Nats. He's probably my only pitcher question mark at this point (rotation or bullpen). I already feel confident in Wheeler and Matz.

Rosario has been great on D but his hitting has been very poor. Hopefully, he's still growing and ends up better later in the year.

All in all, not much to complain about. I dont care about the record too much. It's all about the roster and gearing up for a playoff run. This team is loaded with talent. It always was.
I also thought Lugo looked great in the 6th and 7th last night
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2018 11:00 am : link
It was the 8th that was the issue. He possibly could have tired. How nasty is Gsellman though? Geez his sinkers are nasty.
I’m not as confident with Wheeler and Matz yet.
PhiPsi125 : 4/14/2018 11:24 am : link
Potential? Sure. But they haven’t earned my confidence yet. Matz is still up and down but the potential is definitely there. I was confident with him before he started losing time to injury and mechanics earlier in his career. But it’s early and he’s holding his own. Wheeler has one great start against the worst team in baseball. Great. Talk to me again after he pitches against the Nats. If he pitches well... then we are cooking.

And after what the baseball gods have put us through the past couple of years, we deserve a little good fortune.

The most amazing part of this young season is that we are doing it while our offense hasn’t even been very good. Which is weird to say. Aggressive base running, taking smart risks, knowing what players you can run on, making the defense make plays, and Mickey being one step ahead of everyone else. All these things we never had under Collins and the lack of aggression always pissed me off. You can point to the fact that TC got the Mets to a World Series (which is fair, I guess) but the reality is that it was just another year that was going into the tank until Cespedes came and saved TC from himself. We always knew we had a rotation that was built for the post season.

All in all, baseball is fun again. And not in a lucky, flukey way. In a good, smart baseball way. That’s what makes me confident.
I’m still pissed we lost that one game
Shecky : 4/14/2018 11:35 am : link

ZGiants98 : 4/14/2018 11:37 am : link
I just tend to evaluate pitchers more on how they look more than the boxscore. Especially since we already know what these guys are capable of and its a bit of process coming back.

Matz was very good in 2016 when he was healthy and his "stuff" seems to be back to that level. We know the best and worst of Matz. We know when his confidence is shot and he's laboring. The guy over the last two games was throwing his fastball, curveball, and changeup all for strikes. The velocity was there, he was repeating his mechanics and he seemed fairly confident against a very good lineup. He made 2-3 big mistakes but Ill take that all day over a guy walking the bases full and looking like a mess and barely getting out of it.

Really it's the same for Wheeler. Wheeler's biggest issues were 1.) After all the injuries would his "stuff" ever come back. 2.) Could he ever fix his control issues. Those are the two MASSIVE question marks with Wheeler. Well, based off of what we've seen he seems to have answered those doubts. I think it's time to be excited and encouraged with him. Sure it's a long season but these guys arent prospects. There are hugely talented players that have a lot of major league innings under their belts.

I didnt like the way Harvey looked in his last game. Harvey was more like what I was suggesting was the opposite for Matz. He was laboring and seemed to be lucky to escape with his life. Thats not what we want to see.
It is completely crazy
ZGiants98 : 4/14/2018 11:44 am : link
That arguably our three best players (Thor, deGrom, and Cespedes) haven't been "good" yet. lol.

and Wheeler is that they tend to get overcome with control issues and the mental aspect. More so with Wheeler than Matz. Wheeler has always had an issue with control and never seemed to be able to go long in games because of that. It’s not just the box score. Not just the velocity of pitches.

But hey, we have all these issues and are already ahead of the game. Good problems to have.

The injury to Plawecki sucks but he’ll be back in four weeks. We can hold fort until then. Especially with Lobaton’s sexy frosted tipped hair.
Catcher situation

Nothing happens unless someone gifts us a catcher. Which the only way that happens is we take on a lot of $$. So, odds of us taking on several million for a three week rental, not high.

So only other way something gets done is minor league deals, unlikely but certainly possible someone sees the opportunity worth it. Or trading for a starter and Plaw becomes the backup upon return. But again, who is willing to trade us a starter unless he is grossly overpaid and not much of an Iimprovement??

Bottom line, Indians are the best conversation right now.

don't forget Conforto too. Shecky, who on the Indians would we target? I think we land a starting catcher at some point in the next 2 months depending on how nido/lobaton perform. I am not confident any of plawecki/lobaton/nido are starting ML catchers.
