San Diego drafted him because they were stupid. Archie and/or Eli let it be known that he would not play for San Diego but they drafted him anyway. The Giants got him cheap. Had San Diego dealt the pick they would have gotten more

Geez, Eli was a Charger for about half an hour. Granted, he threatened to not play for them, but that's different.

was drafted number 1 by Tampa Bay and never played for them. He was pissed off at them for messing up his NCAA eligibility and played baseball instead of playing for them.

How is history being twisted here ? Archie and Eli said prior to the draft that he would not play for San Diego. I distinctly remember seeing Archie on TV. Of course if San Diego called his bluff who knows what would have happened ? However San Diego was in a bad position. They were a few years removed from trading 2 #1's, a #2 and two players for Ryan Leaf. They could ill afford to have nothing to show for the #1 pick in the draft.

The Yankees drafted him in the second round, and he was in their farm system playing. So baseball presented a real opportunity for big money, too.

Ron from Ninerland is absolutely correct. The Poor Little Eli Campaign was out in full force prior to the draft - led by Papa Arch and Tom Condon - specifically saying Eli would not play for San Diego, and they named GM AJ Smith as a reason.

Papa Arch didn't want his youngest, spoiled son to possibly have the same career as Papa Arch had in New Orleans. It worked. You have to give Team Eli credit. But it was the height of arrogance...

And frankly, I'm not quite sure this doesn't happen more because the blueprint has been laid out by Elway and Eli.

Interestingly that may not have been the first time Archie influenced where one of his sons played. There was a lot of speculation that Peyton was going to come out his junior year. Had he done so he probably would have been the top QB in that year's draft. Later on it became apparent that the Aints were going to have the number one pick and that Peyton was going to suffer the same fate as his old man. I would have loved to be the fly on the wall for that Father Son talk. Peyton then announced that he was going back for his senior year.
