NFT: The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling

This original documentary is a loving and painful homage crafted by Judd Apatow.

Granted he had quite a brilliant yet tortured persona to work with.

The 2-part 4 hour film is riveting. I highly recommend it (John that means you!) :)
Sorry left out

When he did Larry Sanders or Showtime when he did his show there. However, my wife and I watched both parts of this documentary and were riveted. He was incredibly funny. Subsequently, we’ve been watching the Larry Sanders show (available on HBO on demand and on the HBO app for streaming). He was truly a comic genius and Apatow’s wprlk is exceptional.
Seems he was a great guy to be a friend to

if on his terms, but not a great guy for most of the people he worked with, perhaps excluding the actors.
His ambivalence to commit to the beautiful blonde...

... chick (who was also on the Larry Sanders show) was troublesome as she seemed very supportive (but then again who really knows) and it sounded like he was haunted by this.

His bother's death when he was a kid also seemed to have a huge residual effect on him.

Far be it from me to psychoanalyze someone from a documentary but I think the thing which kiboshed that relationship was that she wanted kids, and ultimately stripping everything away he was frightened he'd pass on cystic fibrosis. I have a friend who have that in his family and they've undertaken screening during pregnancy

not an excuse but it seems he drove people involved in his projects as hard as he drove himself --- definitely took a toll (on everybody).
The documentary was excellent. Really well done.

Shandling was brilliant, but a very complex and conflicted guy. It was a pretty sad piece, although late in life he seemed to have reconciled himself to never having found a lasting relationship. Instead, he poured himself into being a good friend and mentor to the many comedians who revered him.

I think he was one of the great comedians of all time and his It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show were two of the best comedies ever on television.
Brilliant mind..

but he seems like he was a jerk. Incredibly insecure, tough to work with, fired his ex girlfriend was successfully sued by her for 1 mil.

Sounds like he was good to young comics but overall not a guy I would have wanted to have as a friend.

However, I do recommend the Larry Sanders show.

think jerk is a bit harsh.

He was capable of really stupid actions but also incredibly generous and supportive.
