Funny how he got into acting. Was hired as a consultant for the Boy’s in Company C. The. Talked them into letting him audition and he killed it. My dad an retired Marine loved him of course.
Full Metal Jacket was improvised. In his audition, he just improvised a drill seargent rant and was hired on the spot. Then Kubrick told him to do the same thing when shooting the movie.

He did. Apparently some coworker of mine who I worked with in Galloway about 10 years ago told me that it was improvised and he stepped in because the original actor wasn't doing it right. Ermey was there to advise and then he just let it rip.
My coworker from 2007 claimed he knew Ermey personally. Great source huh?
that the boot camp scenes from Full Metal Jacket were the most accurate thing he had seen in a movie from his time he was drafted to go to Vietnam. I used to love watching Mail Call.

I read that he was so intimidating in his role that he once jokingly yelled at Kubrick on the set to sit down and Kub immediately did as he was told lol
Weird that he was only in his mid 40s when he filmed that Â
His character was hard, but human. You could tell the character was being tough not just because he wanted to make them into kickass Marines, but also to help them survive combat. You could tell he cared. Subtle in comparison to the drill Sargent from Full Metal Jacket who didn’t care, he wanted killers and that’s that.
RIP
That role in FMJ is one of the greatest movie roles in history Â
Interestingly, he retired as a Staff Sergeant(E-6) and because of his roles was given the honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) by the Marines.
Regardless, in one Mail Call show he had a M82 Barrett Rifle (.50 caliber) and a target at 1 mile. He missed low on the 1st shot and hit it on the 2nd shot. I thought that was impressive.
RIP To a great man and actor

R.I.P. to a great American!
T’Boo Ted Marshall...are ya out there tonight? You’ve gotta reveal that problem to us!
"The fuckin' war will be over by the time we get up there"

Isn't this incorrect in reality? Aren't you not supposed to address a sergeant as "sir?"
In the Army you always address him or her as sergeant. Otherwise you would invariably get the "DON'T CALL ME SIR I WORK FOR A LIVING" line.
Not sure why the services differ on this.
