NFT: Yankees prospect watch after a month (rankings are MLB.com)

dpinzow : 4/29/2018 8:05 am
Gleyber Torres is in the Bronx (#1 prospect)

--Estevan Florial (#2) off to a slow start in Tampa (High A)
.224/.352/.329 in 20 games

--Justus Sheffield (#3) doing well in Trenton despite the 1-2 record
4 starts, 2.86 ERA, 22 IP, 13 H, 11 BB, 30 K. He'll be in Scranton soon

--Miguel Andujar is in the Bronx (#4 prospect)

--Albert Abreu (#5) wowed in the Arizona Fall League but is on the DL I believe with an appendectomy. Could be a starter or reliever

--Chance Adams (#6) had a big season last year but is off to a so-so start this year in AAA
4 starts, 4.82 ERA, 18.2 IP, 18 H, 10 BB, 21 K

--Luis Medina (#7) has an incredible fastball but walks a lot of batters. Hasn't pitched this year, is in extended spring training in Pulaski (Low A)

--Freicer Perez (#8) is off to a very rough start in Tampa
0-2, 7.27 ERA, 17.1 IP, 20 H, 11 BB, 13 K

--Domingo Acevedo (#9) had 2 good starts in Trenton but had to go to the DL with a blister. Should be back soon. He's 24 so time is running short for him in terms of being a prospect

--Thairo Estrada (#10) hit over .300 in Trenton last year but started this year in Tampa and is struggling a bit. He might be traded at some point if the Yanks want pitching because the middle infield is set (he's a 2B/SS)
I’m a huge Mets fan
Earl the goat : 4/29/2018 8:43 am : link
And the Yankees are light years ahead of the Mets in their farm system and of course in the majors

Cash man has done an incredible job whereas Sandy has done a less than average job. But I blame it on the Coupons

Frazier has exceeded the maximum criteria to maintain prospect status. He is no longer eligible to be on these lists. I think he has like 3 too many MLB abs.

He's not really a prospect anymore I guess having enough ABs to qualify for rookie of the year last year
OK
mdthedream : 4/29/2018 9:05 am : link
but reality is he is a top prospect with a lot of trade value.

He is not when a concussion keeps you out for 2 months. He is just starting to get back.

I look for maybe a trade deadline deal for SP if his head is not all screwed up. Det's Fulmer maybe?
Nice post

The Yankees don't have room in the outfield anyway. They need to ship Gray and Frazier plus for a stud pitcher.
I hope the Yankees keep Frazier
arniefez : 4/29/2018 9:48 am : link
This will be Gardner's last season his contract is up. Ellsbury will be a 5th OF next year if he ever comes back.
Yankees minors...
BC Eagles94 : 4/29/2018 9:56 am : link
has been very underwhelming compared to last couple years. Due to injuries Andujar, Torres, and Austin got their shots with the big club earlier than expected. As did Billy McKinney, who got hurt right away himself.

Albert Abreu and Domingo Acevedo are both on the DL in the minors.

Thairo Estrada was on the DL too for most of the season too, but has recently started playing...but hasn't hit his stride yet after missing all of spring training.

Tyler Wade has been terrible in both MLB and even AAA since demotion.

Clint Frazier missed nearly the entire season so far, until just coming off DL...and also hasn't hit his stride yet after missing all of spring training.

Estevan Florial has not followed up well his huge season last year. His strikeout problem is becoming a real issue. And it is magnified with him not hitting nearly as well so far this year.

Chance Adams has been terrible this year so far.

Justus Sheffield is the only top prospect that has stayed healthy and played very well in the minors so far this year.

**This is not a complaint. And the sky isn;t falling in the Yanks minors. A lot of these guys will get healthy, hit their stride, and be fine. But just comparatively speaking the past couple years, when you checked the box scores daily and saw a bunch of top prospects crushing it...this year so far has not measured up at all. But we've graduated a ton of guys and had a lot of injuries so far. So it is somewhat understandable. Has just made following the farm not as fun this year.
I believe
mdthedream : 4/29/2018 10:10 am : link
the weather is also a factor. Just like with the Yankees they just needed it to start getting warmer. No worries there the Yankees are loaded at the Big leagues with young talent playing really well. Not much room on this team at this point anyway. The Yankees need to add a big arm to push for a World Series.
Clint Frazier....

Frazier (concussion symptoms) was 0-for-4 with one run scored Saturday in a rehab assignment with Class A Tampa, his third consecutive game. He is 0-for-8 over the last two days.

have been great. With injuries, graduations, and recent trades, Sheffield, Florial and maybe Abreu are the only legit prospects left, the rest are lottery tickets and organizational types. I mean, we are in great shape as an organization overall, but the minor league system in and of itself is really not as grand as people seem to think.
Acevedo is the next Betances
DennyInDenville : 4/29/2018 11:22 am : link
Hope he is ready by Sepetember to help us out

I get what you're saying, but I'm not sold on it being a fair point when you consider that the situation is always going to be fluid so you really can't separate what's happening on the farm from what's happening on the big stage (and if Torres and Andujar are no longer considered prospects in your mind, then Frazier should continue to qualify as one). With the major league ball club as stacked as it is, it's perfectly fine that their most intriguing prospects aren't at the Triple A level. And while anything below that may feel more like lottery tickets, the Yankees appear to have a lot of those tickets (no pun intended). Some may be longer shots than ever, but every shot counts.

Bottomline is what

Albert Abreu

came off the DL earlier today. He will be starting today in Tampa.
The situaion
Photoguy : 4/29/2018 2:52 pm : link
as it stands right now, is pretty good. A glut at the major league level gives us additional time for the system to regenerate. Torres and Andujar should be regulars all season. We'll have Frazier ready by summer when a callup is needed, and other than that, we shouldn't feel pressured to move anyone along before they're ready. I don't know which pitcher will be major league ready, though. The everyday lineup is golden, though.
Frazier finding his stroke today. 2-3 with a homer today.

Lets also consider that in prior versions of the Yankees...the words "trading for prospects" was thought to be about the California Gold Rush.

Also, the Yankees dont usually draft in early slots

Also, recent international signings are a potential mother lode of even younger talent not yet on our radar screens

The Yankees
mattyblue : 4/29/2018 5:16 pm : link
have been quietly killing it. 9 of the last 10. 2 games back of Boston. Can’t trade Frazier, he will be our starting LF next year.
Abreu pitched today...
Dunedin81 : 4/29/2018 5:31 pm : link
Just 61 pitches so he's being eased back in. Solid outing but for a solo shot.
Speaking of Frazier, he went deep today down in Tampa.
bceagle05 : 4/29/2018 5:32 pm : link
Glad he's finally back out there.
Jim I get what you're saying...
Dunedin81 : 4/29/2018 5:45 pm : link
But as someone else said there are an awful lot of lotto tickets, especially RHSPs (Medina, Sauer, Schmidt, etc), and the deepest crop of IFAs since the binge year.
Also of note...
Dunedin81 : 4/30/2018 9:13 am : link
Wilkerman Garcia had two HRs yesterday (4 on the season), along with a 2B, twice as many HRs as he had in any single season so far. He has been hot of late. Still quite young for the level, even though he has been on the radar at length.
man what a bad year
YAJ2112 : 4/30/2018 9:23 am : link
was hoping we at least had a couple of decent prospects to look forward to since the season is lost with the Red Sox running and hiding already.
It's early in the season...
Dunedin81 : 4/30/2018 10:56 am : link
a number of real minor league success stories (Swanson, Loaisiga, Nelson, Whitlock, Stephan), a number of slow starts, and a lot of in between. It's still a deep system, but a system that is starting to show some flaws at the higher levels. Position players, for instance, were the strength of the system until a year or so ago. We graduated a bunch, traded a few more, and now it's not nearly as robust. Pitching, however, especially RHSP, is as deep as any org in the league.
I think if his progress continues, Sheffield will be here and play an

Sheffield is not destroying the competition, but the results are positive and the stuff is still filthy. Hopefully 2nd half.

You're presence has been missed, partner. Looking forward to your NYY prospect writing.
Frazier hit a HR today in SWB...
Dunedin81 : 5/2/2018 1:18 pm : link
and won the game with a gapper that would have been at least a 2B (he stopped at 1st).

Brody Koerner pitched a gem too, 6.2 IP of shutout ball. A ton of standout pitching performances for the farm over the last couple weeks, including Sheff throwing 6 IP of shutout ball last night with 9 Ks.
Today???
