# 2 on the Waiver Wire - until a few weeks in to the season

DavidinBMNY : 5/2/2018 9:10 pm
One interesting thing about sucking, in addition to getting a high draft pick is that for all of camp, and through the first few weeks of the season we're picking #2.

So when other teams cut players now, we have practically first dibs. And this should really help with the bottom of the roster after final cuts. There will be a number of teams cutting players on their 53 hoping to get on their practice squad we will have a chance to swoop up.

Keep you eyes on the deeper rosters, especially the Eagles, Rams, Saints, Jags, and Vikings.

We'll be waiting to pounce. It will be like a second draft. I'd expect our Pro personal scouts, where DG thrived early in his career, to be super busy this offseason scouting those top teams (as well as elsewhere in the league)

Basically, I'd look at the guys who get jerseys + backup QB who might be inactive. So that's about 47 guys. I'd be very surprised if less then 3 players cut at the end of roster cut down from other teams aren't on our opening day roster. I could easily see LB, RB, OL, DB from another team filling a spot on our roster.

I saw people posting on the thread of pickups, and I think we're just going to be more active because we are up high and we have depth issues.

Great point, David.

This can help us land our 4th or 5th CB, another LB, a PK, even an OT down the line.
Agreed.

The final 53 will include at least several players from other teams.

didn't we just use a waiver wire pickup?

Nope we're @ #2 until at least Week 3

Waiver Wire Order:
From the first business day after the Super Bowl until the day after the third regular season week, assignments are based on a claiming order that is the same as the order in which clubs selected in that year’s Draft. From the beginning of the fourth regular season weekend through the Super Bowl, assignments are based on the inverse order of their win-loss record.

That's not a bad deal.

There are some UDFA's that might be of interest if they don't stick with the teams that signed them if the Giants want to take a look.

I've been intrigued by QB Brandon Silvers who supposedly got offers from both the E-gals & the Aint's. And Nola got Boston Scott too, but that was a pick, so I don't think they're gonna cut him loose, though I'd much rather see him running backs kicks than our #2 pick. The Boys got Jordan Chunn as an UDFA, and that's a RB who has interested me since I saw him. And I still think the Giants could use a short yardage power RB. It's not Barkley's forte, and they've got Elliot who's really good at it.
That is the Cowboys have Elliot who can handle short yardage.

Another benefit of sucking

Get first dibs on waiver wire.

By "first" of course I meant early or actually 2nd...

If we all agree our third, fourth, fifth or sixth CB is not on the team presently then why do we 9 slots being filled by JAG?
Waiver claims should help make up for the traded draft picks.

A lot of Day 3 picks will hit the waiver wire in September. That list is sure to include some players the Giants would have considered in the sixth and seventh rounds. Of course, it will take time for new arrivals to learn the system, so adding them to the roster so late isn’t ideal. But you can only dress 46 on game day anyway.
David, thanks for posting this and reminding us.

This is HUGE imo. How many times have players who could have been plugged in (short term) to help mitigate a sorely needed void, been snapped up via the order of the waiver wire?

This isn't fantasy football. It's done that way in fantasy football to keep it FA pickups fair throughout the season.
