Witten tells Jerrah he's done

NNJ Tom : 5/3/2018 8:55 am
This might be as big a day for Giants fans as the draft.

Witten was a major Giants killer. I don't think they ever figured out how to cover him.

He seems like a really good dude so I wish him luck in the booth.

Great Cowboy..

Tremendous player

And even at his age a loss for them. Still 2nd on the team in catches and receiving TDs last year. HOFer and class act.
Hell of a player, made a career of shredding our LBs

missed 1 game his rookie year, then started all 16 games for 14 years in a row. Pretty remarkable for a player that runs his pass routes over the middle and also plays at the line of scrimmage.
Incredible stats

about Witten. He always came in during the bye week and at least once during the off season. I told him years ago I was diehard Giants fan but respected his play. Very good player and a nice guy . I wish him the best and glad the Giants do not have to deal with him anymore
thank god.... though another cowboy in commentary is dreadful

as a Giants fan. I mean, he torched us, but such a good player for such a long time, and a class act to boot.

Hopefully he can turn into as good a caster as Aikman has been all these years. Either way, great football career but as a fan of an opposing team, I'm glad it's over.
Good riddance

I'm stunned that he had 214 targets and only 154 receptions. I would have thought 213 for 214 with 112 TDs

he waited until after free agency and the draft to announce. I suspect the team might have known however as the went TE in the 4th round.

The funny thing is, as much as it felt like he was constantly killing our defense, if you cut those numbers in half (since he played basically two full seasons worth of games against us), they're all pretty close to his career averages.
It wasn't so much the numbers he put it, it was ability to make
jlukes : 5/3/2018 10:57 am : link
the small play when the cowboys needed it most.

it was always 3rd down and Witten and our defenses still couldn't stop it.

It'll be interesting to see if he gets into the HoF. Sort of the Greg Biggio of TEs - lots of really good years, but I don't know if he was ever the best player at his position...
Remember the game when he had some insane injury
bhill410 : 5/3/2018 12:22 pm : link
That seemed almost life threatening (spleen maybe?) and I thought well no way he plays. And they he played. And I thought well no way he is any good. And I think he had like 160 yards

Hard to say anything bad about him

You must be joking- first ballot HOFer without a doubt. Just because he was a cowboy is no reason to undervalue how great a player he was. I'm gonna be interested in how this affects the cowboy run game, he was a great blocker!
Sure looked as though the Eagles knew the Cowboys were thinking TE...
Big Blue Blogger : 5/3/2018 12:48 pm : link
...when Phily jumped in front of Dallas in the second round to grab Goedert. Or maybe it was the kid's first name that gave it away.

The Cowboys got nice value anyway, with Connor Williams. But they've been looking for Witten's successor for about ten years, since they took Martellus Bennett. Gavin Escobar followed Bennett, and he was a bust. James Hanna just retired, and he was mostly a blocker anyway. At this point, the Dallas TEs have a total of nine career receptions, so the job is there for Schultz to take, if he shows anything in preseason. I guess Rico Gathers could be the next Antonio Gates; the odds are not in his favor, especially after multiple pre-season injuries last year.

The Dallas receiving corps could be awful if Gallup and Schulz don't produce as rookies. The two vet acquisitions, Tavon Austin and Deonte Thompson, don't scare anyone.
Same way I felt about Montana

I never mentioned that Witten was/is a Cowboy. And no, I'm not joking. I think there is certainly a HoF case to be made. But it's more compilation with Witten. For some, that is enough if the numbers get gigantic.

But, as I'm sure you know, today's game distorts a lot of the passing and receiving numbers; and, for me, that makes it more difficult to assess these guys...
He sure was a Giant killer.

I've had Witten envy for a long time.

I suspect he'll do very well in broadcasting, seems a nice guy.
Was a rumor last week
NNJ Tom : 5/3/2018 2:17 pm : link
He had his meeting with Jerrah this morning to say its over.

He killed us, but you can't deny he is a first ballot HOF. He has the stats, and by the way, he will be a talking head so that never hurt anyone's chances.
Drafted 2 years after Shockey
arniefez : 5/3/2018 2:25 pm : link
and 2 rounds after Shockey. He was everything that Shockey wasn't. Consummate Professional, Smart, Sober, Team Player, Great Teammate etc. A classic example of getting every ounce of production from the talent you're born with. Shockey was the exact opposite. If you put Witten's heart and head on Shockey's body you'd have the greatest TE in NFL history. Even with 3rd round draft pick measurables you still have a HOF TE just from hard work. Congrats on a great career and thank you for retiring.
Congratulations to him.
Beezer : 5/3/2018 2:38 pm : link

I'm sure he'll be a fine commentator. But Romo and Aikman are enough Cowboys yapping at me during Giants games for me to stomach.

Good luck, Witten. Great career. No rings. Bitch.

One of very few Cowboy players that killed the Giants that I could grudgingly admire. Emitt Smith was the same sort of Giant killer you had to admire. There’s no way he isn’t going to be in the HOF.
