Fizdale doesn't have a standout resume, there were better candidates on the market and the Knicks have a track record of making poor decisions.
This is better than landing Mark Jackson, but I'm with Phil on this... I'd have much rather gone with Bud or Blatt. At least Fizdale will be a + with recruiting FA's, when that time comes. His actual coaching acumen remains to be seen.
A more clear cut record of developing talent, not an is said to have. He was probably not the third part of the leadership team Mills and Perry were looking for.

The thing is though is that this team desperately needs to get this HC hire right. Instead of going on potential which may or not pan out (and often doesn't) how about go after the guy who was the 2015 NBA Coach of the Year and who ran the Hawks for five seasons with four straight playoff berths?

is a very solid hire. No complaints here. I probably wouldn't have held to it but Mark Jackson had me considering bailing on the Knicks (until Dolan were gone).
Be prepared that if Kanter opts out and Oquinn opts out knicks are going to trade this years pick and try to make a splash. The signing of hardaway was so bad last year as we all know. They are going to overpay for a star with the hope of landing Lebron. They key is can they do it without sending Frank.

gut just tells me Bud will be the Bucks coach. I don't see the point in arguing Bud until that shakes out. Milwaukee right now is as about a dream situation there is for a coaching candidate.

Yup, if lebron says I am coming if you get this guy, you go and get that guy...
You dont go and get that guy and then call lebron...
You have a guy who le Ron will talk to, have him make the call, if lebron says no chance, you stay the course
even if Kanter opts out. Get a top pick and head back into FA. Give someone like Derrick Favors a 1 year deal with the cap space and see if he would be a good fit with KP.

I just dont see it. With KPs injury, coming to the Knicks would be a massive downgrade in roster talent compared to Cleveland.
The sad thing is, without Hardaway on the books and if Kanter/KOQ opted out, the Knicks could have created space for 2 maxes this offseason. That signing was so bad on so many levels.
The more I read about Fizdale the more I like hire. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes in Memphis.
Lastly, I really wish Mills wasnt still so involved. How is this guy still allowed to be involved in basketball decisions?

How would they have 2 maxes if they didn't sign hardaway?
But In all honesty. Kanter and Oquinn opting out gives the Knicks cap room to go after Capela or Randle which would be a nice compliment to KP
And hopefully hitting a home run in this draft (Mikhal Bridges) gives the Knicks and Fizz a nice young nucleus for the future

Im well aware of how the salary cap works. Let me just say this is beyond a pipe dream for the Knicks. But without Hardaways 17.5mill a year on the books, it would be significantly easier for the Knicks to create space for 2 maxes. Not to mention the 5 million to Ron Baker.
- Kanter and KOQ opt out.
- Dump Lees salary
Without Hardaway or Baker that would put them at close to 60 million in cap space.
Without hardaway you wouldnt have 2 outright max spaces but it would be very easy to sign and trade. Lottery pick with Lee and Thomas contracts attached to it could easily free up the space or you can use lottery pick and other assets to sign and trade for a star. Next year Noah and Lees contracts can extremely valuable in trades.
was even remotely weighed into during the coaching hire decision it would be inexcusable.
it's just media BS at this point. Most fans moved on from this pipe dream EIGHT years ago. We don't even get meetings with top free agents these days, let alone the second best player of all time.

Are you taking into account the 5 to 8 million dollar salary for the first round pick?
All the cap holds that would be on the roster?
Also where you dumping lee tk get rid of his contract with so little teams that have cap space?
Without hardaway you wouldnt have 2 outright max spaces but it would be very easy to sign and trade. No one has cap space this year no one is outright taking Lee's deal..
My main point is if everything happened to break right and Lebron wanted to come to NY, then having Hardaway's contract on the books makes it harder. I'm not sure how thats disputable. Because he would need to be bringing another star and more.
The Knicks currently have-
1 unmovable contract that's probably the worst in the league-Noah
1 contract that is really bad that would need sweeteners to move but not impossible - THJ
1 contract that isn't horrible but won't be easy to move without taking money back - Lee
Not to mention the 12 million between Baker and Lance who probably don't belong on a nba roster...
how easy it would be to dump Lee. He isn't a difference maker, it doesn't make sense for many teams to trade for him and take on additional salary space.
One deal i would try to push for is to potentially swap Courtney Lee and Crowder. Maybe it takes a 2nd round pick to get it done. Exum is a FA, Lee would be a solid back up playmaker/floor spacer for them. I still like Crowder, I think he would be a solid fit at the 3 for the Knicks even if he is a bit below average of a 3 point shooter. Need a grinder like him, plus he's still in his prime.

Unfortunately I agree with this. I don't think many teams are signing up for Lee for 2 years 25 million at 32 years old. Would he even get that contract if he was a FA this summer?
The NBA salary cap economy has changed. Very few teams have cap space and teams are targeting the 2019 summer.

I dont buy that for a second nor do I think the hardaway signing was terrible. Knicks want to add talent without subtracting assets. I dont think they want to do any of those 2 for 1 type deals right now. Thats why they signed hardaway, even if it was a bit of an overpay, maybe. They had a chance to add a young scorer without subtracting anything.
I think theyd try for a guy like Leonard but other than that they will stay the course, possibly go after someone in FA and draft a kid this summer. Then follow the same approach in 2019.
I apologize for the millering of your thread, nyg16, but Holy Crap, I just watched highlights of his game vs. Houston Friday (?)....
How on earth on PJ select Frenchie ahead of this guy. His drives to and through the paint were like a hot knife through butter, his 3s were there, and he sees the floor and connects with the open man on all manner of passes that catch the defense napping like a Steve Nash. Sheesh. No wonder the GM of the Jazz was doing cartwheels when Phil selected Ntilikina. I know this is not new news, I just had no idea how big a talent he is.

First off 12 other teams past on him..
2nd no one thought he would be this good otherwise he would not not been taken 13th..
3rd he was older usually in the draft teams rather go for younger potential...
4th his shot was not very good in college so people thought he would struggle from 3...
5th he played off the ball, people didn't think he could play the point therefore he would be a short shooting guard...
6th dont dismiss frank, he is already one of the better perimeter defenders in the league and he is only 19, it is a big adjustment coming from euro to the nba...
Some people only job is to rank players to be drafted. I agree with some before me, miss this bad and you should be fired. I mean there is no comparison and its obvious. More than 80% of us (if we all saw them play multiple times and all their games on film) could tell Mitchell is on a different level.

Fizdale - man I thought Princeton was a better school.
80% of those 11 names were junk that really shouldn't have sniffed the job. I get not hiring Blatt if you don't think it fits. Mark Jackson is coming off a really ugly ending in golden state and he's been an untouchable around the league since. Not a single good thing has been said about his time there, and a lot of bad has.
That's not totally true. A lot of Warriors front office folks, players, and even members of the current coaching staff have credited Jackson for the way the team plays defense, and for turning around the culture. But it's definitely true that there has been a lot of criticism towards him as well.
Would this have changed anything? Would you have wanted SVG?
This is better than landing Mark Jackson, but I'm with Phil on this... I'd have much rather gone with Bud or Blatt. At least Fizdale will be a + with recruiting FA's, when that time comes. His actual coaching acumen remains to be seen.

Fizdale main mission is to have a great relationship with kp and create a new culture and narrative
He's still a waste of money. Guy is straight garbage.
He cried because after a loss fizdale asked the team if they wanted to win a championship and if they thought they could...
Then fix told him it was no longer the slow grind and that they were going up tempo spread em out like they did in miami...
