NFT: I hope Silicon Valley doesn’t suck again tonight: TV talk.

Boy Cord : 5/6/2018 9:57 pm
This season has been awful. The characters haven’t developed, except Richard, who has been more assertive the past two episodes.

The Americans, on the other hand, is about to explode. Can’t wait for the last four episodes. Will be sad to see this go.

I am going to start watchinRay Donovan. I have heard great things.
Last week's episode was dull,
Mr. Bungle : 5/6/2018 10:03 pm : link
but the season overall has been good. I'm looking forward to tonight's episode.
Just watched last weeks
UConn4523 : 5/6/2018 10:04 pm : link
which sucked hard, but I kinda liked this season more than last so far.
The Dinesh

gloating after the coding blitz may have been the low point of the series. It’s like they wrote hat to pander to the over 60 crowd. Who on earth found that funny?
Just saw a trailer for Succession on HBO.

Looks awesome. Debuts June 3.
Back-to-back dull SV episodes.
Mr. Bungle : 5/6/2018 11:07 pm : link
They don't know what to do with Dinesh, and Jared's treatment of Holden doesn't work with his character.

Oh, and there haven't been any funny lines since episode 5.
Definite improvement tonight.

Although, I’m a sucker for Monica.
Check out Barry on HBO

Can't believe there's only one episode left this season
Giantology : 5/7/2018 6:33 am : link
Seems like they're building towards Richard joining forces with Gavin to take on Laurie and Chinese Pied Piper.

Wait. Only eight episodes rather than ten?
I miss TJ Miller
BlueHurricane : 5/7/2018 8:23 am : link
Show is not the same without him.
It wasn't as awful
pjcas18 : 5/7/2018 8:26 am : link
as last week, it's just not funny in any way.

people don't want to hear it because he seems like a major douche bag, sucks at stand up, and very likely committed domestic violence or sexual assault against a co-ed when he was in college.

but the show ended with TJ Miller.

While he's not a great actor, he had enough chops to carry the show with the unique supporting cast, now no one does.

it's a show of supporting actors with no one having enough presence to center it.

Sort of like when Michael Scott left the office, TJ is no Carell, not even close, but same point, IMO.

Others are welcome to their own opinion.
well I see BlueHurricane
pjcas18 : 5/7/2018 8:26 am : link
agrees with me, but when I mentioned it previously I was assaulted with comments about how he sucks and how bad the show was last year even with Miller.
sorry but the bitcoin episode was hilarious
GMAN4LIFE : 5/7/2018 8:39 am : link

TJ Mill does suck at this point
UConn4523 : 5/7/2018 8:45 am : link
I thought last season sucked too. Atleast this season was advancing forward but that hit a brick wall last week, atleast in regards to still being funny. Episode 5 I believe, where Jared won over the tech interview was fantastic.

They just never added a new character to the show which is kind of strange for losing one of its top billed actors.
The WORST part
KWhite2250 : 5/7/2018 9:48 am : link
Of this show from the beginning was TJ Miller. His act is so fucking stupid.

So what made you start watching the show to begin with? He was the "name" on the show, I guess or Mike Judge, but you knew who TJ Miller was and you knew he was the star of the show, right?

Or were you a big Thomas Middleditch fan?

Gavin Belson was fantastic in Season 4. This year, Dinesh is just lost. Someone made the point above. There aren’t any actors that carry the show.

I watched it because it had gilfoyle who I enjoyed in freaks and geeks and party down. It had dinesh who I enjoyed on Franklin and Bash. And it was a comedy show by Mike Judge on HBO. My interest had 0 to do with TJ Miller
This season is better than last season
Sonic Youth : 5/7/2018 10:50 am : link
(though I missed yesterday's episode). The magic from Seasons 1-2 (and 3 to an extent) is totally gone though.

Having said that, Barry is amazing. What a fantastic episode yesterday. It's become what I look forward to for the Sunday night HBO session.

So you should love the show now then.

It's basically Gilfoyle (who is awesome and one of the few saving grace's on the show), Dinesh, and Jared providing comic relief to Richard's bumbling techie genius awkwardness with a side of Monica thrown in for balance.

Do you find it better now that TJ is off the show?

This season is just ok to me. I dont think the comedy has really been that great.

But yes I do enjoy a tiny bit more without having to see TJ. TJ is just like Dane Cook to me. In tiny bits I can take the comedy but given leading roles is way too much
I agree
pjcas18 : 5/7/2018 11:11 am : link
TJ and Dane Cook are similar because neither is funny - especially in stand up, but TJ is good in roles like Erlich Bachman because the role is almost like a caricature and meant to be inane and over-acted (like Gavin Belson).

Miller was also good as Stainer in She's out of your league.

Only other thing I saw him in was Yogi Bear with my kids.

So he doesn't bother me as much as Dane Cook.

In the Silicon Valley role he was perfect, in a show where everyone is a caricature he was a good fit.
This was a short season
steve in ky : 5/14/2018 11:01 pm : link
Only eight episodes
I liked the first five episodes of SV this season.
Mr. Bungle : 5/14/2018 11:53 pm : link
But the final three episodes were just humorless. Very disappointing how it sputtered across the finish line. I get the impression that Alec Berg was putting most of his creative energy into Barry and going through obligatory motions with Silicon Valley.

The season finale of Barry was weird. I don't mean bad-weird, but dreamlike-weird. The whole sequence at the lake house seemed like a huge, abrupt jump forward in the narrative. I wasn't sure it wasn't a dream until the very end. It will be interesting to see where that story goes in Season 2. I don't know how Henry Winkler's Gene character can remain a comedy relief character going forward after this episode. But we'll see.
