NFT: Netflix recommendations?

mattyblue : 5/7/2018 8:25 am
Stuck sitting around the next few days, any recommendations on shows/movies to watch? I’d love a good binge show but I think I may have watched most of the bigger names already.

On a side not has anyone noticed the amount of shows they have dubbed into English? A few look really good but I don’t know if it’s worth trying to watch? Watching the trailer on some and I didn’t even realize they were dubbed right away.

Thanks in advance!

I liked Dark a lot. It is basically Stranger Things without the comic relief.

I have Dark on my list but I need to watch that when the kids are not around. I can’t seem to ever do subtitles when they are about. However it looks great
I just started the second season of Happy Valley.

When I started watching the first episode I was a bit dubious as to whether I'd like it, but it turned out great. The only issue is that it's all regional UK accents and sometimes it feels like I'm listening to a different language. But the acting is very good.

Netflix

has disappointed recently in that they don't seem to be adding a lot of new content. I thought the opposite would be true when they raised their rates.

Also, weird that Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu all seem to offer the same movies...wish there was more diversity and more of the older classics.
Not Netflix but has anybody seen Cobra Kai?
robbieballs2003 : 5/7/2018 9:40 am : link
It was surprisingly awesome. It isn't going to win any awards but just the nostalgia is well worth it. I thought it was very well done with the jokes that make fun of themselves.

is really extraordinary if you are in any way interested in German history during the Weimer period and the impact on ordinary Germans of losing the First World War. All wrapped up in a detective "film noir" type story.

Best thing I have seen in a long time.

Enjoyed Luther as well. English actor from the Wire (Stringer Bell) as a detective dealing with serial killers and his own demons.

it's a documentary about fighting in hockey - told from the perspective of the fighters.

It is sort of like a documentary on gladiators, by gladiators.

if you're a hockey fan at all you will find it riveting.

if you're not a hockey fan, maybe not a good suggestion for you.

...for me, once proud of watching nearly no TV, binge-watching has gotten to the point where I need to set limits to my own watching.

I can't get over the quality of all that is out there.

NETFLIX?
- PEAKY FUCKING BLINDERS: 1920's British Gangster Drama with Sam Neil as an 'Elliot Ness' type - show ROCKS. We'd watch it with stereo cranked - sountrack is the BALLS.

- Bloodline: Beautiful, addictive drama of a royally fucked up family. Sissy Spacek, Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini star are all great in this one.

- Black Mirror: My current binge. 'Twilight Zone' for the new generation - twisted, bizarre storylines built on modern and future technologies. Writing is fantastic, production top-shelf. (Electric Dreams on Amazon right on the same page)

- Portlandia: I'm late to the game on this one - really funny sketch comedy show with Fred Armisted and Carrie Brownstein(Sleater Kinney guitarist). Fred's humor, well known from SNL is well represented here.

- Lost in Space: Writing isn't my favorite, but show looks fantastic - worth watching the pilot.

Also, well known 'Halt and Catch Fire', 'Stranger Things', 'Shameless' (William Macy).

We're also big fans of 'The Path' with Aaron Paul - that's on Hulu.

Try to limit ourselves to one hour per night.
"The Push" is an interesting show...
Dan in the Springs : 5/7/2018 10:07 am : link
kind of a psychological experiment wrapped up nicely in an hour. A British celebrity magician tries to convince someone to commit murder. Watch to the end - it's worth it.

I was a little disappointed in Mind Hunters. It started off very interesting but they got away from the serial killers and just created their own issues to create more drama. I thought those angles were not realistic and annoying. The serial killer aspect is what is really interesting.

Please tell me what you liked about Ozark. I stuck with the entire season, but it was solely because I like Bateman and wanted the show to be good. The story is weak and the characters are odd and unbelievable.

i think it's just a reality of TV&movies today that they have to market to both men and women so you get some of those storylines. i didn't think it was over the top a la Gangs of NY where that stupid Cameron Diaz storyline just ruined the whole movie. MindHunters co marketing was manageable.
Lost in Space is pretty good
Tom from LI : 5/7/2018 10:36 am : link
The CG is very good. Nice spin on the original story. Does some flash backs which I am not a fan of but it is necessary for the way the started the show.

A lot of forced humor. My wife comments that the family does stupid things to constantly put themselves in harms way.

I like the way they introduced Dr. Smith's character and Don West. I also liked the story how its not just them that was on their way to Alpha Centuri.

Slow in spots, but it is worth a watch if you like Sci Fi and the original Lost in Space.

Don't get me wrong. I liked the show. I just thought it fell off toward the end. I don't want to have spoilers in here so I won't get into specifics. I am fine with their personal lives being intertwined because it shows how the stress of the job affects that aspect but there was other stuff in there that was just too unbelievable.
Another vote for Babylon Berlin

as others have said, if you haven't already done it.

Premise in season 1 is: you are in post WWI Brimingham. There are three main factions, 1) the local crime-gang familys, 2)The IRA, 3) local organizing communists. In the middle of all this, a huge shipment of machine guns bound for the front lines goes missing. It's great!
Broadchurch season 1 was terrific

Two was meh, 3 was a bit better IMO. Who ever said Killing Eve was great is not kidding, my favorite new show this year.

Cobrai Kai was fantastic and hysterical... Rebooting the story through Johnny's perspective was perfect...

I watch mostly sports and HBO or Showtime, but my 10 year old daughter loves the Goldbergs so we watch that on Wednesday nights together. the family in the show are philly sports fans which sucks and it's not comedy most on here would appreciate, but I like the old-school sitcom style and the father daughter bonding time. The Middle too on Tuesdays we watch together.

I look forward to 8pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, since she finds both shows entertaining.
Thanks
