Time to recharge the batteries a bit before the big showdown at home with the scum.
Been very nice to see Neil Walker finally start producing (.364/.611/.455 in the last five games). It's not easy to be so patient when you're a veteran who is struggling to get the bat going, but Walker's been doing it - 6 BB in 18 PAs.
Injuries: Bird will make his first appearance at extended spring training today. Kahnle is scheduled to throw a bullpen session lated this week. Warren is throwing off flat ground, but has not yet thrown off a mound. Drury is in Trenton now because of a Scranton road trip - Yanks want to keep him close to NYC in case he's needed. Went 2-3 last night with a homer and a walk. There isn't any rush to get him back just yet, but it will be interesting to see what happens if Andujar continues to scuffle after his hot start (.224/.240/.306 over the past two weeks, 13 Ks in only 50 PAs and just 1 BB).
Finally, there isn't much more to be said about Gleyber that hasn't already been said, so I'll just say the same thing again - wow.
Seems like several games have had the same arc. Either lose the lead and reclaim it and win or take the lead late and win, and different guys stepping up.
What a fun team to watch.
Gleyber and Andujar have been a great addition.
Look forward to see if we can get a healthy Bird back. We could use another powerful left handed hitter.
I'm hoping Gardy gets on a roll.
We need Kahnle and Warren. Warren has not been the same since he got hurt last year. Like to see the old Warren back.
Domingo German was has been fantastic his last two outings. Incredible movement on his pitches. He had Cleveland batters off balance for six innings. Hope he stays on course.
Go Yanks
2B is Torres now but having Walker off the bench able to play multiple positions will be valuable. I like Austin, but Walker is a more useful bench piece. Austin may go down when Drury comes back.
Otherwise I think Boone is really getting a feel for the team and I like his style. I had no problem sticking with Betances yesterday. As the game lined up you could see we were going to be 1 guy short with Robertson,Green not available.
Just a tremendous vibe around this team right now. Very positive group, no head cases, and they really seem to like each other. Check out Didi's video of Gleyber's clubhouse entrance after yesterday's game.

It's a great group, and Didi really seems like a main source of the camaraderie. Everybody gravitates towards him, especially the young latin players. Torreyes also seems to be a great clubhouse guy. I always get a kick out of the dugout celebrations. After the home run yesterday you can see Torreyes already opening a giant sunflower seed bag to pour on the guys at home plate. Pretty funny.
Very easy group to root for.
This team is so much fun right now.
Putting aside that first month of 2017 when he was dealing with that foot injury, here are Bird's numbers including the playoffs:
80 Games
.256/.351/.969
22 Home Runs
62 RBIs
2B is Torres now but having Walker off the bench able to play multiple positions will be valuable. I like Austin, but Walker is a more useful bench piece. Austin may go down when Drury comes back.
I think on the broadcast yesterday it was mentioned that Austin leads all AL rookies in both HRs and RBI. It might be tough sending him down, but someone has to go.
Cashman can put that one on his placque (sp?), 3 months of Chapman in a season that was going nowhere for Torres and then getting Chapman back I was about to post on Chapman's big smile yesterday after the Torres HR and also that it will be hard to send down Austin when Bird comes back as noted below.
Wee needed a 6th starter, and I think Montgomery will have to wait his turn when he is finally ready, plus it looks like Justus Sheffield is ready to make his push. It would be perfect if by the trade deadline these five are healthy and pitching well, and we have Montgomery and Sheffield ready. Then we don't need to use any prospect resources for veteran starting pitching.

agree on all.

and didn't get much of a spring training. It's entirely possible he just needed that first month to knock the rust off. His track record is solid.

It's not an easy call. Austin has done a very nice job filling in. But if Bird comes back then Austin is confined to a platoon role against LHP. Just not sure that's worth a bench spot if it means losing the versatility of Walker or Drury
I know many want to see them trade for a frontline SP, but I don't think the market will bring one without significant costs in top prospects. No way do you get rid of the talented depth we have which has made this team so special this year. I say we continue to play and promote the young guys up, Sheff, German, and Monty will be fine. Our starters are pitching more like they should now that the weather is warming up. I love how dangerous our lineup is, and I don't even think it has reached its peak potential yet, with Bird, Frazier still both out of the lineup, and some guys not even getting hot yet (Sanchez, etc.).
The walkout's are very reminiscent of 2009, but this team just has a very special feeling about them. Got to keep building for the long haul, and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Keep it going Yankees!
Yeah, but I think the old "a year too early is better than a year too late" applies here. And if all goes according to plan, Sheffield steps i in 2019 as the power lefty in the rotation, Monty the soft tosser. Thing couls be worse. :-)
Some are easy; Cole and Hale are definites, perhaps Holder as well if we go with one less RP.
After that it gets really tricky, as none of our position players deserve to go down or be cut (unless Andujar continues to fall off). Austin is major league player; while folks here are talking of sending him down, he's certainly proven capable of playing at this level. Does Frazier need a lot more time in the minors, and is that our solution to the roster glut? Do we trade Betances? Bird, as crazy as that seems to me?

Ok you got me. Who's Hale?
Smells like a sweep.
Smells like a sweep.
Did Betts get hurt yesterday?
Let's not forget trading for Didi!
Hope you are right -- it looks like he has the maturity. Ironically I think (hope) that if he is sent down he has rebounded back and it's more an issue of options than slumps.
Moreland.
Every single year the Sawx have some random bag of shit hitting like Lou Gehrig for a while. It's annoying.

There was a good article in the Athletic recently about how several of the guys who signed late in spring training were off to slow starts (not all - JD Martinez and Hosmer were hitting out of the gate)...but I think youre right that its just taken Walker a little extra time to find his groove.
The last several game, you can really tell hes seeing the ball well. Swinging only at good pitches. Proving to be a dependable utility guy
Someone (Drury, Walker, Austin, Andujar) is going to get pushed down to the minors or traded, and well debate the wisdom of the decision when it happens, but all this depth should prove valuable over the season.
Bird will take someones spot when hes ready, and Frazier will push for time soon too. Ellsbury, may as well euthanize him like a horse
As for Gleyber, as others have said...wow.
You've inspired me - from now on I'm calling Ellsbury Ol' Yeller.

Can't call him "Ruffian". Doesn't really fit. ;-)
Best idea I've ever heard regarding Ellsbury. God, what a brutal contract. In the future, "albatross contracts" will be referred to as "Ellsbury contracts."
Heh - that one still pisses me off
With all the talk of Romine being Gray's personal catcher it was nice to see Sanchez behind the dish for the 6 no-hit innings that German threw. I no Sanchez has to do a better job with the wild pitches and passed balls, but I really think he is learning to call a better game.
But all that aside, it seems like it is a matter of taste for Gray. If it works, let it roll.
I'm more worried that he's below the Mendoza line again.
I'm more worried that he's below the Mendoza line again.
Your catcher should get every 5 day off any way to keep him fresh in a 162 game season means he gets 32 days off let him DH 10 of those games and he plays over 140 games a year. Let Gray work himself out. Gary's response about Gray and his personal catcher was awesome. Team 1st plain and simple.
And the fact that Severino is starting the first game of the Boston series is more icing on this magnificent cake.
Agree. Well put.
Stanton has been disappointing
Gardy has been disappointing
Hicks has been disappointing
Walker has been disappointing
Tyler Wade was disappointing until his demotion
Judge has been OK (relative to expectations)
Sanchez isn't a .200 hitter
Did has been great
So, one regular position player has consistently exceeded expectations. Andujar had an impressive streak, though he has cooled off, and Torres has been strong, so maybe he counts, too. And Tyler Austin has been good in his platoon role.
Bird hasn't played a single game
Warren and Kahnle, both key bullpen pieces, have been out
Seems that nobody has seen what a fully healthy Drury can do, so he may be a big contributor -- the guy was decent with migraines and double-vision, so I imagine his potential is greater now that those issues have been addressed.
Mostly, this streak has been based on excellent starting pitching and timely hitting; the starting pitching likely will regress a little, but I hope the bats and a reinforced bullpen (with players returning from injury) to more than make up for that. Much fun!

Greg Bird went 1-for-3 with two walks in an extended spring game at DH in Clearwater #Yankees
As a rookie, Carlton once displayed his mindset to McCarver.
"I was shaving after a game when I realized somebody was standing behind me," recalls McCarver. "It was Steve, this tall skinny kid with a big Adam's apple. He looked me in the eye and said, 'You should call more breaking pitches.' I lost it. 'Who do you think you are telling me how to call a game?'"
When Carlton was acquired from the Cardinals in a trade in 1972, he was reunited with McCarver, but only for a short time. McCarver was traded to Montreal that June 14 for another catcher, John Bateman.
Fast forward to 1975. When McCarver was released by the Boston Red Sox, general manager Paul Owens brought him back to Philadelphia. At 35, he evolved into "Carlton's catcher."
Was it the case that Carlton was more comfortable throwing to McCarver?
"No, not really," says McCarver. "It was a difference of opinion with many people. After having faced Lefty and having talked to hitters, I knew the slider was his best pitch. Others felt he should throw more fastballs, but the hitters told me the slider was the killer. If you recall, a lot of hitters would shake their heads after swinging at that pitch."
From 1976 through most of '79, McCarver was in the lineup when Carlton started. At one point, McCarver caught 90 consecutive Carlton starts. Lefty's record during that stretch: 48-26. Overall with the Phillies, Carlton was 81-45 with McCarver behind the plate.
While McCarver spurred Carlton, Lefty seemed to spur Tim's bat. For his Phillies career, McCarver hit .272, with 26 homers and 168 RBIs. While catching Carlton: .306, 10 homers and 66 RBIs.
I don't understand the fascination with Fulmer. He really has NOT been very good. He gives up a LOT of hits, doesn't strike out many, and already has had issues with his pitching arm. All of those factors scream to stay FAR away.
Domingo German is better than Fulmer right now- MUCH better stuff and younger. Why overpay for a guy just because fans recognize the name?
I think Rich has a fair point. He doesn't really miss bats. But he has 2 of the 3 true outcomes all set. The fact that he's already dealt with injuries is far more concerning. So that's my hesitation.
But no decisions need to be made right now. Let's see what German can do (I'm very optimistic) and Sheffield is looming as well.
This is the in the running for the most incoherent post of the day....

With all the graduations to the bigs, we don't have close to the amount of stud prospects in minors that we had last year. In fact, Trenton doesn't have one top hitting prospect. There won't be one guy in the line-uop you really care to see. So hopefully Tate, Acevedo, and Johnny Lasagna pitch this weekend for you.

hell I can get up there and look pretty....what a waste!!!! just one hit...one freakin hit...anything!!!!!!! when pitcher see him they think easy out....then say afterward that was easier then I thought.

Lol seriously. Yanks are playing so well, the random trolls that pop up are running out of material

Became the first pitcher in history to throw 6 no hit 9K innings in his first career start. And he was the Yanks #17 prospect. Why anyone thinks we need to trade for name pitching is beyond me. Outs are outs and we have lots of guys who can get them.
Are you certain of that ? In the 80's I remember a Yankees September call up who got a spot start as did German. He was only supposed to pitch 3 or 4 innings but he took a no hitter into the 7th. I can't think of his name, but he never pitched that well again.
Dave Eiland?

I worry about Andujar, I think he gets sent down. He's not walking enough will be their excuse if he stays cooling off.
Also, I think if we do target Fulmer or another 1A starter that Andujar may very well likely be in the trade with a Machado looming ahead, and wanting to likely keep Frazier over Andujar unless they would rather go after Bryce instead of Machado, interesting..
Anyway , great thread everyone. Sorry to ruin it lol jk.
Let's sweep the Sox and then start saving for World Series merchandise
German Became the first pitcher in history to throw 6 no hit 9K innings in his first career start.
The correct stat is:
German became the first pitcher in history to finish with no hits and throw 9K in his first career start.
About a week ago Nick Kingham was perfect thru 6 and two thirds with 9 k against the Cards in his first outing. But he gave up a hit in the seventh to take him out of a perfect game and the stat mentioned.
Sorry to nitpick, but it matters a little bit. ;-)
Sorry, some of these "statistics" get just a wee bit ridiculous...

German is not the name of a country, it is the name of a language. So that stat is fake news!

Excited to see some of these kids in person. Unfortunately (for these purposes alone) Sheffield was promoted but it'll still be a good time.

We'll see. I think I'm lined up to see Will Carter, who is a prospect but not an elite one, but that could change. As for hitting prospects, no top prospects but a lot of interesting guys. Katoh, Avelino, Amburgey and Jhalan Jackson in particular, all worth seeing but not prospects on par with the Andujars and Florials of the world. I think Kyle Holder is still hurt.
Sorry, some of these "statistics" get just a wee bit ridiculous...
Sorry, but that was the stat. Your attempt at humor sucked.
