If the Browns took Barkley...

Jerz44 : 5/8/2018 5:57 am
I haven't read anywhere what the Giants plan B was.

Did Gettleman say who the Giants' #2 option was? If not, where were the Giants likely to go if the Browns took Barkley?

My guess is Chubb.
I believe it was reported
bigbb : 5/8/2018 6:04 am : link
That it was Chubb but who knows for sure
Chubb
JonC : 5/8/2018 6:11 am : link
.
I would think a trade down
jeffusedtobeonwebtv : 5/8/2018 6:24 am : link
I think they would still want Chubb, but expect with every quarterback available several teams would be looking to trade for that pick.
Make it stop

They would have traded down for 6 picks
ZogZerg : 5/8/2018 6:49 am : link
I think folks should mock how that would have worked out.

Oh wait...
No one knows...
2ndroundKO : 5/8/2018 7:06 am : link
but Chubb makes the most sense.

All we heard on here pre-draft is how much the Giants loved Darnold and he was the only QB they’d take but, alas, the Browns were going to take him. How did that work out?
Plan B was to trade out of the spot.
smshmth8690 : 5/8/2018 7:19 am : link
DG said that once Cleveland took Mayfield he was picking Barkley, and not even listening to trade offers.

They would have been touched by the hand of God
Actually sounds like the plan was to panic a bit,
Jimmy Googs : 5/8/2018 7:44 am : link
plug back in all the phones to see if anybody had an offer, and then ultimately pick Chubb
We have God on our side...

JonC : 5/8/2018 7:47 am : link
yup, and I suspect the belief was Chubb would be gone if they moved down lower than #5, thus the talk they were ok picking him at #2 if SB was gone.

yep
I'm Sure The Giants Had a Plan B...
Jim in Tampa : 5/8/2018 8:03 am : link
They probably would have picked Cedrick Jones.
If Barkley Was Gone And The Giants Weren't Going QB
Trainmaster : 5/8/2018 8:07 am : link
I would have been upset with the Chubb pick at 2nd overall.

The supposed Cleveland offer to get the 2nd overall in exchange for the 4th overall plus Cleveland's 33rd and 35th overall would have been a better move.

Cleveland likely would have taken Mayfield at 2, the Jets would have taken Darnold at 3. The Giants would have had the option of Chubb or Nelson at 4th overall or another trade down.
The Browns were never taking Barkley at #1
blueblood : 5/8/2018 8:17 am : link
that was a media driven fantasy.
Then you would have been upset because
Jimmy Googs : 5/8/2018 8:18 am : link
DG was never going to trade that pick.
DG couldn't be certain who the Browns would pick
JonC : 5/8/2018 8:50 am : link
so he stayed put, and got the prospect he wanted anyway.

Good idea, except they didn't unplug the phones until after Mayfield was picked. I doubt there would have been panic, since DG probably figured there was a 50/50 chance Barkley was gone at #1.

But sadly, yes I think Chubb was 1B.
DG had the phones unplugged around 6pm that Thur evening
Jimmy Googs : 5/8/2018 9:01 am : link
he was never going to trade that pick...
Barkley could rush for 2000 yards per season over the
Hades07 : 5/8/2018 9:08 am : link
next 10 years, with an additional 1000 receiving per year. Combined with 25 TDs per season and he still would not have lived up to all the hype heaped on him in the last 9 months.
Trade down
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/8/2018 10:27 am : link
Apparently there was MayfieldMania spreading like a wildfire around the NFL this year.

Question is, did Giants have it too? I dig advise to take a flier on the Vegas longshot 15-1 for Giants taking Mayfield. Not terrible advice.
I can't see there was any way the Giants would take Mayfield
jcn56 : 5/8/2018 10:30 am : link
just does not seem like the type of persona they want leading the effort on their behalf.
Never heard any strong interest in a QB besides Darnold
JonC : 5/8/2018 10:38 am : link
and that was very late in the process and no indication he was really in the mix at #2.
very likely Chubb
Big_Blue_in_the_Bronx : 5/8/2018 10:47 am : link
they weren't going QB as they don't want to boot Eli at year end and want to give Webb a chance. Less to do with the grade than the strategy IMO
Mayfield was not on anyone's radar as #1,
Doomster : 5/8/2018 12:23 pm : link
until a couple days before the draft......

The fact the Giants had a shot at any of the 3 that were pushed forward by the media, was a complete surprise, and then they took Barkley, because the Giants are playing for now....even if they are not ready.....
80% Here Beat Off on Josh Rosen For 3 Months

...and based anyone who had the temerity to suggest ANYONE else, but now, they have "other opinions",on who the pick would be?

I don't recall but a few posters wanting Rosen. It was a pretty fair mix between Rosen, Darnold, Allen, or a trade down. The rest wanted Barkley.

It as Rosen, Rosen, Rosen, 24X7. Nobody was asking for Josh Allen or Sam Darnold. The other 20% was Barkley or trade down

No doubt that's how it appeared to you.

Confirmation bias strikes again. You think that it was "Rosen 24x7" so those are the only posts you really noticed.
Huh??
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/9/2018 9:43 am : link
the prevailing opinion in the last couple weeks before the draft was Darnold or Barkley.

Especially when Rosen kept acting flaky in interviews.

I think several posters liked Rosen (and at least one with a stalking-like fetish), but not many really expected the giants to take him.

And in retrospect, it looks like a lot of teams thought the same way.
They didn’t so

Move on. Let’s support who we have as Giants.
Chubb at #2 for Plan B
Wazzat : 5/9/2018 4:34 pm : link
does not make sense,
A classic 4-3 DE into a 3-4 OLB?
Sounds like a risky move, not a generational performance grade.
hmm.
They would have taken the Heisman Trophy winner

Mayfield would scorch the Eagles and Cowboys
