As cool as the Barkley picks, Hernandez is a stud

Lets wait for pre-season, but there is a lot to like about this pick.
That play vs Texas at the :48 second mark

Fair point, but this guy dominated Senior Bowl too. He just toys with people.

Oh I am excited about the guy. Our dismal seasons lately have put a damper on my expectations. But we are definitely heading in the right direction.
How about the fact he did 37 reps at the combine?
Knee of Theismann : 5/9/2018 2:27 pm : link
The most for an o-lineman, while Barkley did 29 (the most for a RB). I can't wait to watch that smashmouth combo this season and many seasons to come.

Da'ron Payne (the Skins 1st round DT) only did 27 reps, less than both Hernandez and Barkley. Couple that with the fact Hernandez is bigger than anyone they have on D and Barkley is faster/quicker than anyone they have on D.

I'm so pumped up right now lol

dep, some of those clips are UTEP playing Texas. I don't consider that lower level competition. at the 0:57 mark he pancakes the Texas DT!!
One place he struggled at the Sr Bowl
Sy'56 : 5/9/2018 2:36 pm : link
And I see some issues on his UTEP tapes...pass protection against short and fast. OC Brett Jones struggles with the same thing...

To be fair, Hernandez has 32 in arms, which is on the very short side. And yes, even 1 inch on bench press does make a difference on a high rep approach.
If there is one thing Giant fans know how to appreciate, its

Richie Seubert is one of my favorite Giants of all time. I can see Hernandez quickly becoming one as well. Very pumped to see him play. Especially against the Eagles.

Pro Bowler. I love this kid and I am not concerned about any part of his game. He will mature gain experience and get better, the great ones get better against better competition. This kid can do it all, pass protect and run block. He has great balance and good feet. His wrestling skills will really help him.
Senior Bowl Practices

I remember reading about both Hernandez and BJ Hill during and after Senior Bowl week . The word was they both dominated everyone they faced except each other which were equal. Training camp should be interesting ... at least for the few practices where they can actually hit.

Run/Pass split
Go Terps : 5/9/2018 3:19 pm : link
I'm hoping this is a year where the Giants actually run the ball as much as or more than they pass it. If the backs are Barkley/Stewart/Gallman and our guards are Omameh/Hernandez, to me that spells "run the shit out of the ball and use that to create play action opportunities".

The 2008 team had a run/pass split of 502/491. It would be great to see a similar ratio in 2018.

Aren't you an analytics guy? If so, why wouldn't you be calling for them to be a pass heavy offense?
While some knock him for his lack of versatility,
Diver_Down : 5/9/2018 3:29 pm : link
I consider it a plus. The guy has only played LG. While he has stated that he will play wherever the coaches see fit, I suspect that the SBW will continue to play LG with Omameh playing RG. He plays one position and one position well. Tired of the Jack of all trades - master of none approach.
Terps...
Chris684 : 5/9/2018 3:30 pm : link
Eli hinted recently that play action has basically been a lost cause.

With the back we've trotted out there since Bradshaw and Jacobs, no surprise there.

My draft strategy was exactly what the Giants did.

Barkley + the top rated interior OL in round 2 Hernandez/Daniels/Smith

or...

Try to slide down in rd 1 for Nelson and then take Michel/Guice or Ronald Jones in rd 2.

The additional picks would have been nice in the 2nd scenario, but I wouldnt change what happened as I believe they got the best 2 players they could have gotten.
of course play action has been a lost cause. it can't work unless

A) D's can stop your running game with a 7 man front. No reason for the safeties, in particular, to cheat up or even worry about the RBs.

B) You have no deep threat, which was the case once Beckham went down last season. Even if the safeties bite, who was going to make a play downfield?

While it would be great if he comes close to Allen, we should be elated if he makes a single pro-bowl in his 4 year contract. For years, we have been hearing that Pugh, our best OL, was playing at a pro-bowl caliber level. Yet, the guy wasn't even considered an alternate for a replacement of a pro-bowler.

If we didn't pick Barkley I would have hoped we went Nelson. But I'm stoked about Hernandez who is pretty close to Nelson. He has the attitude I want to see on this line. Maybe his presence will trigger some nastiness elsewhere on the line as well.
Yes he is! Giants were lucky to get him!

On three successive picks, the Browns passed on Barkley, Chubb and Hernandez... could ultimately be the three worst successive picks in NFL draft history...

That's not how this team is built. If Lauletta were the quarterback it might make more sense, but we've got a quarterback who might be shellshocked from years of abuse and who's always been best throwing the ball downfield off play action. Our best WR is also coming off a lower body injury, and we're probably going to want to keep him from the short routes that get him killed.

An interesting approach might have been to draft both Nelson and Hernandez, and build the offense around having them obliterate people.
curious what his quickness looks like
mdc1 : 5/9/2018 5:40 pm : link
against upper level talent and will be interesting to see how a UTEP conference level does against the traditional conference athletes and pros. UTEP plays many bums in their schedule and got beaten badly by upper level teams.
Looking at those highlights
Dave on the UWS : 5/9/2018 6:00 pm : link
and seeing that he's kind of squat in his build I can see Sy's point. He looks a little stiff with regards to his lateral quickness and dealing with speed. Good film work and knowing jus opponents will help with that. His strengths are outstanding though.

Also PFF says he has some issues with fundamentals. In particular not getting low enough. How much does he have to improve to be a good starter?

I was screaming, begging for the giants to run the ball TOO much before week 1 this last season. At times in the past I had no problems passing it a million times with Eli but I really felt the giants needed to learn to walk before they flew this season. Figured the offense would need time to oh forget it we just sucked the high hard one. As confident as we all were I was a little leery and wanted to stabilize the game with ground control. Alas.

This year I’m not as worried because we have a pro offensive mind here now.

The Browns have two of the highest paid Guards in the league in Zeitler and Bitonio. Hernandez isn't a fit in Cleveland. They needed a guy like Corbett who can play all 5 positions on the OL and he will compete for their starting LT spot.

I think Reese looked for players that could theoretically play tackle or guard. DG just goes for a pure guard.
