EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The Giants announced today they have waived running back Paul Perkins with a non-football injury.
Perkins suffered a pectoral injury prior to the start of the teams offseason conditioning program and subsequently underwent surgery.
A fifth-round draft choice from UCLA in 2016, Perkins played in 25 regular-season games with five starts, and he started the 2016 NFC Wild Card Game in Green Bay. His two-year totals include 153 carries for 546 yards (3.6-yard avg.), with a long run of 22 yards, and 23 receptions for 208 yards (9.0-yard avg.), with a long catch of 67 yards. In the playoff game, he rushed for 30 yards on 10 attempts and caught three passes for 27 yards.
In 2017, Perkins played in 11 games, including starts in each of the first four games. He was inactive for four games, and did not play vs. Kansas City on Nov. 19. Perkins finished the season with 41 carries for 90 yards and eight receptions for 46 yards.
As a rookie in 2016, he finished second on the team with 456 rushing yards on 112 carries and caught 15 passes for 162 yards. Perkins made his first career start in the season finale in Washington and ran for 102 yards, the Giants only 100-yard performance of the 2016 season.
Reese 5th round pick which means he probably should have been an UDFA. 90 yards in 41 carries last season. I don't think he'll be missed.
IIRC his reviews were not that bad by the independent draft pubs. But they made a huge deal over him missing the rookie mini-camps because of UCLA's tri-semester schedule and it became somewhat of an excuse for poor performance. Like a person could never catch up from missing a mini-camp. I mean, if that were so, why would anyone with NFL aspirations ever go to UCLA or why would a team ever draft a UCLA player? It just sounded bizarre.
He was not good last year and lost his position before getting hurt. Gallman looks much better, and now with Barkley and Stewert in, plus Gallman, there was no place for him.
He had a great shot to make it here, but just didn't have it.
I thought he was a poor use of a draft choice when they picked him. And as a Reese pick coming off a bad sophomore season, it didn't look good for him making the roster this season anyway.

Interesting note about NFI -- teams are not mandated to pay the player's salary for a NFI. Many do pay the player at least part of his scheduled salary, though.
Obviously, Saquon Barkley isn't going to run the ball 500 times next year. Gallman is primarily a between-the-tackles runner, as is J-Stew. Having that speedy running back with receiving skills that can make plays outside and in space seems to be an open position on this roster. It's certainly not Jalen Simmons, nor is it Darkwa, who, despite the recent surgery (which was just to remove a plate) would be ready to go for training camp.
If Perkins would be healthy early, it would seem he would sort of fit the mold. While he doesn't have elite speed, he has pretty good quickness, agility, and the requisite receiving ability to be in that role. But Pumphrey would likely be a stronger option because of his speed and short-area quickness.

Perkins is actually waived/injured. If he clears waivers he goes to IR
Waived/injured is what happened with Ballard and NE scooped him up. Obviously Ballard was toast but Perkins' injury doesn't sound serious.
He had a great shot to make it here, but just didn't have it.
No. This wasn't even a football injury.
Well, I guess you can count me in that boat. The guy had talent. He had a respectable rookie season before falling off the cliff last year.
Perkins
Apple
Flowers
Thompson
Wing
Depressing.
Funny, cause most of BBI was raving about the pick when it was made. But, derp, Reese made the pick so it must have been awful.
Another post bashing Reese. Shocker.
Darkwa just had surgery.
Can you go fuck yourself?

Yeah, and he had a pretty decent rookie season too. He just got hurt. There's no way to forecast things like that unless you're HomerJones I guess.
I like Gallman more - but I'm not totally sure Perkins can't play in this league at all or be a decent depth back.
Let's hope Shurmur and his staff know what they're doing when it comes to educating players, incorporating them into the team, self-scouting, etc.

(NFI=non football injury)
I did.
As a fan, of course, I'm sorry it didn't work out.

The benefit of being a fan.... hindsight.
Easy to criticize everything when we already know how it turned out or how it has gone after a couple of years.
Highly doubtful. This isn't like the Jake Ballard situation where Ballard actually produced.
That might get Robert Martin an invite to fall camp. When you average 5 ypc behind Rutgers OL you've at least got a shot at the practice squad.

That would be interesting!

Their offense still would have sucked. THe scheme is unworkable unless you have Aaron Rodgers

Aren't Apple and Thompson still (at least nominally) considered starters?
