talented writer. I do not read many books- very few back in the 1980s- but loved Bonfire. Awesome book....movie was a let down.

RIP. 88 not too bad. A great life.

One of my favorite books, about the Mercury Seven astronauts.
Agreed on Bonfire

Such a great book, such a terrible movie. A Man in Full was also a really good read, as was his nonfiction stuff.

are a trio of books that few authors can - or have - reached. He may not be on the Mt. Rushmore of American novelists, but he's within at least the second tier. RIP to a great writer.

reading the obit fuelled my desire to read more of his work.
Only read bonfire, which i loved. but also big fan of Breslin and Hamill etc who I believe were in the same ballpark.

Didn't know he was a serious baseball player.

RIP
Can't deny his talent

I enjoyed The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test as much as the next guy when I read it at 19, but Wolfe later came to represent a certain white male literary elitism that was difficult for me to square. And some of his later work, specifically I Am Charlotte Simmons, was awful. All in all, a mixed bag.
i have a first printing of Electric Koolaid

If all you get out of Tom Wolfe is white male literary elitism, it says more about you than it does about him. He was the great skewerer of white elites. But yes, Charlotte Simmons had a lot of cringe.
I had the fortune of meeting him on a few occasions

as we went to the same high school, and he frequently returned for various events and fundraisers. A gracious and witty man in person and an outstanding writer.
