Lorenzo Carter: The Next LT?

mittenedman : 5/17/2018 9:39 am
Before anyone gets mad (and it would piss me off) - this is very much tongue-in-cheek.

Lorenzo Carter: 6'5" 250 lbs.

Lawrence Taylor: 6'3" 240 lbs.

One of the underscores of rookie mini-camp was Carter being unexpectedly explosive off the snap. Sure, it could be meaningless, but it could be the beginning of Carter wow'ing observers. Isn't it nice to not be able to dismiss the possibility we're sitting on a stud pass rushing OLB? What ultimately makes or breaks a 34 is how good the OLBs are.

There was this little nugget from his college teammate Aaron Davis:

Quote:
"Man, that guy - he looks like he's LeBron on the football field," Davis recalled with a laugh Saturday, adding: "I mean, as soon as he walks through the door, you're like, 'This guy.' You don't see too many people who look like him, and are that athletic, so any time you bring that to the table, and he has the work ethic to back it up, you're gonna be someone who's highly touted."

Georgia stacked him and used him to cover TE's but he still managed 15 sacks. That Kirby Smart D is stacked and makes it difficult for any one individual to pile up #'s or rush the passer full time. Think Carter beats out Kareem Martin at LOLB and gives the D a much-needed boost in team speed.
Yep
Josh in the City : 5/17/2018 9:43 am : link
Lorenzo Carter is the next LT b/c they're similar in size and both had a good rookie mini camp.
The next LT will

arrive when Moses parts the Hudson.
I'd be happy with the next JT

It's getting to the point that this draft class might not be able to
regulator : 5/17/2018 9:53 am : link
live up to the hype!

I would be satisfied if Carter turns into a quality NFL starter. That would be a considerable improvement over our last 10 or so third round picks.
I am as excited as the next Giant fan
johnnyb : 5/17/2018 9:56 am : link
with the positive press he is receiving. But, he was a third round pick for a reason. Does he have skills? Yes. But come on, let's not anoint him as nothing more than a rookie LB with potential.
If Carter Ends Up Starting This Year
Trainmaster : 5/17/2018 9:56 am : link
and is under consideration in a year or two as "just missed making second team All Pro", I'd be very, very happy (given out track record with 3rd down picks).

I'd be more willing to ponder Barkley being Tiki Barber 2.0 (minus the know it all attitude) than even for a minute mention a 3rd round pick and LT in the same post.
No, otherwise Gettleman would have said Carter
Jimmy Googs : 5/17/2018 9:57 am : link
was "touched by the hand of god"...
Zo
Tim in JTown : 5/17/2018 9:57 am : link
I have high hopes for Zo. He's gonna be fun to watch. Teams are gonna have to adjust for him which will hopefully give the guys in the middle a chance to collapse the pocket. I was wondering who might be the neutralizer for Wentz in this year's draft. Maybe it's Zo.

Great, tenacious player at UGA. Hopefully he continues that at the next level.
One thing we can all agree on
gmenrule : 5/17/2018 9:58 am : link
is that we finally have someone who knows how to draft. I'll bet that at least more than one of these draftees will be on the roster in 5 years ! 2 or 3 more drafts like this and we are on the way to being a perennial power.
Isn't offseason wonderful
ZogZerg : 5/17/2018 10:02 am : link
I hear that Lauletta is the next Montana!

We will be unbeatable for the next few years.

LOL
With all that Mara has given Carter...
Brown_Hornet : 5/17/2018 10:05 am : link
...He went out and got a GM that has publically stated that Carter was touched by the hand of god.

He went out and get a Defensive minded Defensive coordinator.

He used the 2nd overall pick in the 3rd round to select...Carter.

This guy and that guy are all healthy.

One guy has a clean slate.

Carter has virtually everything he needs to be LT.

It's now up to Carter to come thru for the owner, the team and fans. He needs to be LT.

What
Giants : 5/17/2018 10:15 am : link
why would anyone even think of starting such a thread.
With all due respect LT was one of a kind. Smart, tough
Blue21 : 5/17/2018 10:16 am : link
and mean. He was allowed to pretty much due what he wanted on the field. That's not happening again in my opinion. I saw him play. Anyone that has knows a player like him probably isn't happening again. He definitely had the football "it" factor.
I like the optimism of this post. That would be awesome if he were
GiantBlue : 5/17/2018 10:17 am : link
the next coming of LT.....

But I wonder way back if somebody posted on the NE Patriots fan site whether Tom Brady could be the next Troy Aikman or Dan Marino and somebody said...."Sure, Kid. A sixth rounder.....don't expect much!"

I strongly believe some players blossom later and are sometimes overlooked. While Carter could be a complete bust, there is every chance he could be an outstanding Giant worth of the ring of honor!
I think..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/17/2018 10:17 am : link
Carter is closer to being a Left Tackle than LT....
He could be
Mike from Ohio : 5/17/2018 10:21 am : link
He could also be just an average player, or he could be out of the league in 3 years. Too soon to say anything meaningful.

Unfortunately, that won't stop people from saying it anyway.
More likely he'll be the next

Would be pretty awesome if he becomes 75% of what LT was
The_Boss : 5/17/2018 10:31 am : link
One of the golf pros at my country club here is a UGA alum and was raving about his athleticism during the season. I like the kid a lot, but come on with this LT stuff....
A little early
Giant John : 5/17/2018 10:32 am : link
For the anointing wouldn’t you say? I’m sure he appreciates the comparison and associated pressure that it brings.
Someone was asking for it by starting a thread comparing anyone
Ira : 5/17/2018 10:35 am : link
to LT. But that aside, I think we got a very good one in Carter. He's got size, speed and football smarts. He won't be as good as LT, but as a pass rusher, I think he'll more than replace JPP.
I am excited that Carter is a Giant
Rjanyg : 5/17/2018 10:38 am : link
but he WILL NOT be the next LT. The closest thing we had to LT was Derrick Thomas and that was a long time ago. There will never be another LT.

Carter
Archer : 5/17/2018 10:48 am : link
Carter coming out of High School was a 5 star recruit.
He was highly touted and great things were expected from him.

He has all of the innate physical attributes and he has shown phenomenal skill in flashes.

If Bettcher can figure out a way to maximize Carter's talents, he could be special.
Sounds like the anti-LT
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/17/2018 10:52 am : link
LT slept in meetings never worked out and I don't recall him being shredded like Steve Weatherford.

And maybe Kyle Lauletta will be the next Joe Montana.
Section331 : 5/17/2018 10:58 am : link
Come on, can we stop with the hyperbole? I'm very excited by Carter's prospects, but no one is doing him any favors by comparing him to LT.

The Next LT..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/17/2018 11:18 am : link
will have a career arc closer to Josh Gordon or Will Hill these days.
LT
Fred in Atlanta : 5/17/2018 11:28 am : link
was NFL Defensive player of the year his first two years.
A 240 fast LB then
Carl in CT : 5/17/2018 11:32 am : link
Is a 300 LB who runs a 4.3 today.
One of the main reasons why LT will not be replicated...
EricJ : 5/17/2018 11:36 am : link
is mostly due to talent but also because players today want other things besides "winning". Money is more important, marketing, and protecting yourself from injury, etc etc.

That’s not fair. Players are getting stronger and faster yes, but LT developing in today’s game would benefit from all that, plus his obvious talents. He was the very best. Maybe if you plunk Babe Ruth into a modern MLB lineup, he would suck, but that’s not really fair.
Huh??

Think if you plunked Babe in today's baseball he would still be the Babe.
Until like FMiC was saying, he was suspended for drug/alcohol use.....

The thing that stands out about Carter
Knee of Theismann : 5/17/2018 2:22 pm : link
When watching him play is his closing speed. He runs a 4.4 40, but he also has amazing short-distance acceleration. It seems he can get hung up on blocks sometimes, but once he's free, he closes the space between him and the Quarterback faster than anyone I've ever seen.

. different game now that your opponents OT is 320lbs as opposed to 275lbs.
Just my opinion
Dan Blue : 5/17/2018 8:31 pm : link
But I think he’s going to be really good. Yes there’s a big difference between being really good and being LT good.
If he can do some zone style PD that's huge
idiotsavant : 5/17/2018 8:46 pm : link
You can switch up collins (shadow style Vs TE, or zone vs TE, for example, or blitz, etc) and Carter (chase, zone PD , or true blitz but maybe not the 4/3 DE type stuff) whose coming whose going.

If you line up Collins over the tight end
idiotsavant : 5/17/2018 8:54 pm : link
Then Collins blitzes, instead of covers, you need someone who has enough speed to jump that TE pass route. Or the other way around. Carter has the speed.

I don't think you will see Martin in that roll, but on the field as a variable line piece more or less.

Well actually, he will have to change his last name to something that begins with a "T".

You can't spell Carter and start it with a "T" - that would be Tarter. And, people would probably start to call him Tarter Sauce. I don't like it .. I don't like it at all.
Following up,
chopperhatch : 5/17/2018 11:27 pm : link
I totally GET what the OP is trying to say...not sure so sure why you guys cant play along.

I interpreted the OP as suggesting Carter could be the NEXT (as in same type of player) LT in terms of his athletic similarites to #56. A pass rushing demon who is a OLB/DE tweener (that's literally what LT would be in today's game) with the athleticism to be effective in pass coverage as well as against the run. Something that is a very rare combo for the position. For instance, Leonard Floyd was attractive for having TWO of the three abilities I mentioned (his slightness in stature suggested his being a liability against the run at the pro level) and he was a top ten pick.

I get that Carter was a 3rd rounder, but I also get the OP in that he has those the rare combo of attributes to be a 3 way force at OLB....as well as quite a bit of production at the highest level in college.

I highly doubt the OP was suggesting that Lorenzo Carter is going to affect the game like Lawrence Taylor. Rather that he could be the first type of player that LT was for our team (because we havent had a player or even scheme that valued skill set like that) based on his athleticism.

I get the initial post/idea. While Von Miller is the closest thing to LT, Carter has freakish athleticism and physical attributes that can have similar game wrecking potential. Never thought much of Leonard Floyd because of his build...not his game. Carter has similar athleticism with a NFL frame...and now we have a place for that kind of player on our defense
"looks like he's LeBron on the football field"
WideRight : 5/18/2018 8:08 am : link

Is that supposed to be a compliment?
And Von Miller is a one-trick pony
WideRight : 5/18/2018 8:09 am : link
Nothing close to LT

Get real
It sure would be great if a third-rounder
81_Great_Dane : 5/18/2018 10:51 am : link
turned into the most disruptive, dominating defender in NFL history. But maybe wait until he's actually played in something resembling a pro game before we start with that comparison?

I mean, at some point people were excited about Damontre Moore, too. Some guys blossom, some guys fold.
Huh?
Rong5611 : 5/18/2018 10:55 am : link
There will never be another LT, even if this guy turns out to be great.
Exactly as chopperhatch said
idiotsavant : 5/18/2018 11:40 am : link
Except, again, if it's a combo lb/de/PD player you seek. Rare indeed.

The DE part is what has changed the most since the 1980s due to an average 40-even a 50lb increase in the size of the O Tackles ...that your DEs need to take on.

Which is why the ILB/OLB duties have changed since then as well.

Basically, bigger for the line or even faster for shadow or zone PD. ..usually you have to choose one, as 289lb ers who can also fly are even more rare than 240 ers who could fly then were rare.
One of my favorite picks
