I am hoping that the Yankees use the 23rd overall pick for a starting LHP or a catcher. Some possibilities:
LHP Shane MacClanahan-South Florida
LHP Ryan Rolison- Univ of Mississippi
LHP Ryan Weathers-HS (son of former Yankee David)
C- Noah Naylor HS from Canada
Other thoughts for the Yankees top pick?
I'll take whomever he recommends
...local kid from Westchester County.
18 years old, played for Brunswick Prep School.
This young man is a big bopper... significant plus power.
Lavigne and Hackenberg intrigue me more in the 2nd. Hackenberg is a better bet to get there than Lavigne. First round I'll be happy with the best of whomever falls, be it Turang or Casas. Seigler wouldn't be a bad pick either. I like Siani. Lunch I wouldn't take there, talented but never a consistent performer.

Good kid, good catcher.
Had a really good summer last year in the Cape Cod League.
Clearly your autocorrect is hungry.
Is there a Hamburger among the drafters?
Or even better, a catcher named Mike Pizza. (ok, that's a reach)

A piece about local draft prospects talks about him.

Baseball America had him going 28th to the Astros in their Mock yesterday. mentioned in their paragraph on him Marlins at 13th & Yankees at 23rd could have interest.Let's hope he drops to us!

And, while I hate to admit it, UVA pitchers have a terrible track record as pros, particularly when it comes to injuries.
What's the high risk? This is the baseball draft, not the football draft.
Bad picks can set a franchise back just as quality picks elevate a team's status. We can look at the Astros,Yankees,Braves & Phillies as recent examples of how the draft can help a team's development. And in the MLB draft, there's even higher risk as HS players are being drafted,so Greg is certainly on point when he talks about risk!

How does a bad pick set a franchise back? It's just a bad pick. A missed opportunity. But what percentage of first round picks (outside of the top ten or fifteen) actually turn out to be difference makers for a team? This isn't a QB taken with the 23rd overall pick in the NFL draft we are talking about. If the Yankees blow the 23rd pick on an 18-year old who never makes it past Trenton, it will not set the Yankees back. He will just be one of the large majority of mid-to-late 1st round picks who never made a name for himself.
I agree that, except if you are picking high, missing on a single first round pick is unlikely to set your franchise back. Repeatedly missing is a different issue. You need to hit enough so you don't have to rely on Free Agency for everything and landing good prospects also increases your capital to trade. Rarely do prospects meet or exceed their pre-draft ceilings and pre-draft floors always seem to be overstated. A team like the Mets are in so much trouble because they have drafted players whose ceilings were role players because they thought they had a higher floor and most have busted. Those are the type of players that you try to get from your Senior signs and Day 3 players and the Mets are spending 3rd Round picks on college Juniors.
I think the shift has rendered LH pull hitters less valuable in evaluators' eyes, and that's at least a factor in why we've "strayed." Remember Teix?
I wouldn't take him at 23. He's an overaged pitchability righty, more control than stuff. There are better options. Maybe in the 2nd, but he probably goes before that.
By most accounts, his stuff this year was not as good as he showed in past years. Kris Bubic looked better than him this year and he is more of a 2nd Round pick. Mark Appel busting so prolificly also serves as a recent caution with Stanford pitchers.

Way to jinx it! (j/k)
Sorry. If you are willing to wait, Lenny Torres I find intriguing and he will come for less than Rocker or Hankins. Turang I think suffered from prospect fatigue, but knows how to play the game. Casas can flat out mash
Some scouts feel that he can also play 2B. Good pick by the Yanks.
He's four or five years away. Sanchez will be a free agent in that timeframe, he could be playing more at 1B and DH by then, and up the middle prospects always have value.
Was he BPA? I had a couple guys I liked more, but he was in the same tier. He was mocked in the teens by Fangraphs and others, he wasn't necessarily expected to be there.
I would think so- save some money here to reach a bit at 2 and 3. At the same time, get a quality prospect.

Rich, don't çoubt on it. They've been on him for months, per Phil he had big exit velos from both sides of the plate, he was expected to go 15-25 by most (even if ranked lower on big boards). This wasn't about savings, they likely thought he was BPA. I'd wàger a beer he's within $200k of slot potentially right there.
Can’t complain about the recent minor league turnout but the draft is a crapshoot for most teams but especially for the Yanks.
