I doubt having to step down, but a period of treatments may need to let Abrams or whomever handle duties for a short time.

treatments get rough at times pending chemo used, but can be functionally mostly.
Best wishes

And if he steps down, what exactly happens. Do we promote Abrams, who we passed on just a few months ago? We can't promote the Director of Player Personnel, who was literally just brought aboard. Do we bring Accorsi on to lead another GM search, with this one being an actual search rather than a predetermined one?

In the age group of DG, Hodgkins would be most unlikely. He likely has non Hodgkins lymphoma, the type to be determined by the biopsy that he must have had. I treat patients with these diseases and am quite optimistic for his survival given his age and likely visit to Sloan Kettering. Treatment can be combination chemotherapy with increasingly good results in spite of some less than favorable histologies. Patients receive these treatments as outpatients and by and large respond rapidly and with minimal toxicity. This is a result of improvements in the drugs used and improvements in adjuvant therapy for lymphoma. I do not believe that he will have to step down from his position, but that said do not know how wide spread it is and whether certain organs like his bone marrow are involved. Overall, he should do quite well but as I mentioned, certain subtypes of lymphoma, despite therapy have a predilection to recur. This cancer is a more chronic form and one where decent and curative treatment is available. BTW Eric best wishes to your Dad.
I was told the no hodgkin's lymphoma responded well to the

Ugh so horrible

Just when we are starting to feel good.

I pray that DG beats this thing.
It will depend what he has of course,

but my father was diagnosed with lymphoma at age 60, and he died at 74. He functioned just fine for those 14 years and was working about 50 hours per week until a month before he died. I'd say for the first decade, he was completely fine. They took his spleen out and that did the trick for a solid 10-12 years.

A thread about a man being diagnosed with cancer is a shitty place to rehash a "they didn't do their due diligence" take.
Best thoughts to DG and family

My father has had lymphoma since 2000. He has had three episodes over the years, with remissions in between. The most recent episode involved metastisis and required a bone marrow transplant, which was successfully completed in January of this year.

During all of those episodes he worked and stayed busy. His energy wasn't the same and he had to pace himself, but the work definitely sustained him and helped him get through things.

I hope in this case the team can put some strong subordinates in place to shoulder some of the burden while keeping our GM in place.

Obviously, whatever is best for Gettleman and his family is what should happen, but I shared my experience to express that sometimes having a cause, a focus, or a job can be the very thing that makes recovery possible.
Best wishes to Dave G and to Eric's father.

For Dave Gettleman and his family. Also to Eric and his family. I lost both parents to cancer and the moment you find out it's like a reality stops your sense of your world and yourself.

May God bless them all.
We all wish DG the best in his battle with this disease, but...

for the sake of the Giants, I hope DG's illness doesn't lead to a greater decision making role for Chris Mara.

You don't have to make any major decisions. You promote Abrams as the interim GM and wait and see. Hopefully DG is back by the end of the season and ready to roll in the off-season.
